the 2015/16 Season - Guildford Hockey Club
Welcome to the
2015/16 Season
1
A word of welcome from our
President, Maggs Kyte
Hi everybody and welcome to Guildford Hockey Club.
It’s been an exciting and busy start to the season with lots of new faces
arriving and some old and familiar faces leaving. We are sadly waving goodbye
to Ian Russell who has been Club President for several years having been
involved with the club as a player and organiser for over 40
years. We wish you well Ian in your new home. GHC won’t be
quite the same without you.
My first hockey club was Banbridge - we had a grey slate
pitch which was state-of-the-art all-weather in the days
before Astroturf. Banbridge men had a great rivalry with local
opposition Lisnagarvy but in those days Banbridge was king.
We even had some Irish internationals - Frankie McGladdery and Colin Allister
are names I remember. But there were no juniors - no-one started playing
hockey until they went to secondary school - and every match started at 2.30
on a Saturday afternoon. How times have changed and for the better.
Compare that with today and the vibrant club we have at GHC. Hundreds
of juniors from the age of 5 or 6 up to 18. Men’s and ladies’ teams involving
every age group from teenagers up to those in their 60’s and maybe
beyond. We have several parents and children playing together and forming
tremendous bonds that will last a lifetime. GHC is enabling our young players
to move into coaching and umpiring as well as playing which gives them all an
opportunity to develop in many other aspects - a young umpire successfully
keeping control of an adult game is learning skills well beyond their years.
So what is it about hockey that gets under our skin? Reading the interviews in
this brochure the same themes emerge - the team camaraderie, the friends
you make that last for years, the team cohesion and partnerships that develop
with people you might otherwise never meet, being able to play for many
years and even if you do stop there is always the chance to
Guildford give back by coaching and umpiring. Being a hockey player is a
Hockey Club
lifetime commitment!
So thank you for supporting GHC. Your contribution to our club
will enable more development and for that both I and all our
membership are very grateful.

here has been
significant change and
upheaval in the Men’s 1st
team squad this season.
Results have been difficult
to achieve to date but in
the last few weeks a new
determination and resolve
has arisen within the squad.
This was characterised by a deserved
victory over Team Bath and a narrow loss
to Fareham. The squad has continued
to be strengthened by new recruits
and is aiming to maintain its status as
a National League side for the 27th
consecutive year.
everyone else who gives of their time
for no reward. Also a huge thanks to
Mel and Graham Burgess and Geoff
Tonks for their unswerving and generous
support of the club.
With three games to go before the
mid-season break the squad is working
hard under the guidance of a team of
caretaker coaches and hope to be in a
‘safe’ position by Christmas and to then
achieve respectability by the season’s end.
Andy Cairns
The players are very grateful to the
club for their unswerving support in all
that goes on behind the scenes - the
committee, the bar staff, the chefs who
produce such excellent match teas, and

extended the opportunities of our
promising juniors to create a diverse
team which has a mix of experience
and exuberance. Our results have been
mixed so far; but win, lose or draw
the positive attitude of the players has
been exemplary. The team is starting to
gel and I am really looking forward to
seeing how far the team can develop
throughout the season.
I
t is a really exciting time to join
Guildford Hockey club as a new coach.
This season the ladies’ section has
experienced lots of change; we have a
lady at the helm as Club President and
lots of new personnel in the ladies’
1st XI squad.
The support of the club and partners
is much appreciated affording us
the opportunity to run the team as
professionally as we can. We also enjoy
being part of a sociable and friendly club
engaging with umpiring, coaching and
social events.
Our main objectives this season are to
secure our position in the South league
whilst creating a positive performance
environment for all players in the
squad. We have welcomed new players,
promoted existing club members and

hundred 5- to 18-yr-olds. Through our

adult league matches in addition to
their Junior matches. And many take
advantage of opportunities to assist with
coaching and umpiring their younger
peers.
Our squads are split into small abilitybased groups for training and matches
so that each individual can develop and
thrive to his or her potential. We offer
outstanding opportunities, including
a superb goalkeeper development
programme.
Our top players participate in county and
regional competitions and have enjoyed
good success in recent years including
regional and national champions.
GHC Junior players have fun while
experiencing the problem-solving,
teamwork and character-building that
comes along with the fast-paced, social
sport that we love. We welcome you
to see the Junior teams in action on a
Sunday at the Club. Thank you for your
support.

it’s always for positive reasons. There are plenty of
players in the Irish hockey team I also look up to.
Because we don’t have funding, these guys who
are lawyers, doctors, barristers, accountants have
full time jobs and yet still have the ability to qualify
for the Olympics which is pretty inspirational. Other
teams like GB and Holland have full time players
whilst we all have 9 to 5 jobs then train and play
and can still beat England in the Europeans; the
lads are paying to play. So there are characters that
may not be famous and if you look around you can
see similar people.

yourself and
enjoy it. There’s no point in playing something that you don’t enjoy and don’t
put too much pressure on yourself. If I go out with a smile on my face and
want to enjoy it and even if I do make a mistake, don’t think about it or overthink it; those days are the best. Just keep playing and playing!
What advice would you give to a young aspiring hockey player?
My name is Stuart Loughrey, I’m 24 and from Dublin.
I have 62 caps playing for Ireland. Currently I’m
preparing for the 2016 Rio Olympics with the Irish Squad and I play defender
and midfield for the men’s first team at Hampstead & Westminster.
Please introduce yourself!
How did you get into hockey?
My mum and brother both played hockey and I
started playing in primary school.
It’s a great way to meet friends; I went to
Loughborough University without knowing
anybody - I joined hockey and they became my family at university. The
Irish coach once said to me that hockey is the best passport you can get; no
matter what country you go to you can join a club and make friends instantly.
Secondly, I really wanted to pursue the talent I have in hockey to see how far I
can go.
Why do you enjoy playing hockey?
Never to be afraid to make a
mistake, because you learn from
your mistakes. To take on feedback from any coach, no matter how negative or
positive; it’s always useful and it’s how you use that feedback to improve the
way you play that’s important.
What would you say hockey has taught you?
Pad Thai
Good Will Hunting
Nikki Lloyd
My name is Nikki
Lloyd, I’m 28, a
Scottish international forward and mid-field player with 70 caps
including two European Championships and one Commonwealth Games. I’m
currently living in Farnborough.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
My brother is three and a half years older than
me and everything he did I wanted to do - so
when he started to play hockey I wanted to play hockey!
How did you get into hockey?
Brian O’Driscoll – from an Irish point of
view he’s a real role model on and off the
pitch. He’s never in the papers for doing something bad or for mad nights out,
Everything! I love the off-the-field stuff
so being in the gym, training, working on
fitness; anything to do with weights I love. You take your strength, power and
skill onto the pitch and there’s nothing better than running past someone and
beating them with your speed, it’s beautiful!
12
13
What is your favourite food?
Favourite movie?
Who are your favourite sports stars?
What do you enjoy about hockey?
Self-discipline – so saying no when
I was younger, saying no to going
out and knowing I had to be up in the gym at 6.30am I didn’t need to be out
at 1am with friends. It’s taught me time management - when I was younger
getting on with my school work, and now getting planning done before work
to make sure I can play hockey. It’s also taught me to just enjoy things. There’s
no point in doing something if it stresses you out or it doesn’t bring you
happiness and I love hockey because I enjoy playing it.
What three things has hockey taught you?
What’s your favourite food?
And your favourite movie?
Burgers and chips!
Love Actually
Jamie
Dwyer, the
Australian men’s hockey player who has been
voted number one player in the world seven
times. He’s in his late 30’s still playing and
he’s everything I would like to be. His skill is
unbelievable, his fitness, his shots, his technique - everything in my eyes is
perfect, I’d just like to be him!
Who is your favourite sports star?
Don’t let
setbacks
bring you down or stop you. So if you don’t make a team or make a selection,
don’t stop because one thing coaches are looking for is how you react to that
setback. If you can be resilient you will come back stronger.
What advice would you give to a young aspiring hockey player?

We don’t just stand on the side-lines and advise; we do stuff that makes a difference.
We work in the business, typically for between 1 and 3 days a week, which means we
really get to know and care about both the business and its people.
We free up the time and energy of the business owner to do more of the stuff that made
them successful in the first place.
Once we get to know a client business we also invest and provide short-term lending to help
manage cash flow.
