West Wind - Westwood Baptist Church
Westwood Baptist Church Joining God in His Work May 2016 West Wind Being the Church Filled in an Empty World On Sunday, May 15th the Church will celebrate Pentecost this year, the day forty-nine days after Easter which commemorates the coming of His Holy Spirit, the presence and the power of the risen Christ on earth and in the lives of all believers. The Scriptures tell us that the time had come when Jesus was no longer physically present with those who believed Him to be the Son of God and Savior. His disciples, nevertheless, did not feel abandoned or orphaned, for they believed that at Pentecost God had sent them his Holy Spirit - His constantly abiding Presence and the source of vibrant Divine power actively at work through and in their faithful lives. As Jesus promised ("..you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you" -Acts 1:8) it happened ("that the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit." -Acts 4:31). They heard a sound like "the rushing of a mighty wind" filling the whole house, and when trying to explain the visual effect of this extraordinary experience, Luke described the Spirit as "tongues of fire" (2:1-4) coming to rest on each person in the room. In stark contrast to the apathy and ignorance with which many present-day Christians and Christian churches treat Pentecost, there was and remains nothing gentle, "ho-hum," or "to be taken for granted" about the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not just some old ghost that haunts the halls of Sunday School classes from the days of yesteryear; therefore, Pentecost ought not be treated, as it often is, as the poor step-child of Christmas and Easter. The Holy Spirit is the presence, the power, and the action of God himself among us, the way and the means by which the Risen Lord reveals himself and possesses Christians. ….Continued on Page 2 Inside this issue Sermon Schedule …..………..2 Business Meeting..……...…...2 Missions Opportunity..……..3 Ladies Luncheon………….……3 Singles……..….……………….....3 GriefShare………………………..3 Ingathering……………….……..3 Youth .................................. 4 Children .............................. 4 On Call ............................... 5 Food Bank………………………..5 Birthdays/Anniversaries ..... 6 Seniors ................................ 7 Financial Highlights ............ 7 Operation In As Much……....7 Memorial Day Holiday……….8 ...Continued from Page 1 Robert McAfee Brown says that "To be possessed by the Spirit is not simply to 'feel inspirational' or to be imbued with a 'team spirit' but to be possessed by God. He was central to the experience of the early Christians and He is central for the authentic Christian experience ever since." The Spirit Sermon Schedule May 8 Dr. Keith Vaughn “Mommy, Read Me A Story” Acts 1:1-11; Luke 24:44-53 May 15 Children’s Sunday May 22 Dr. Steve Bolton “The Fellowship of Faith” Acts 2:42-47 May 29 Dr. Steve Bolton “Worrying Like Christians” Matthew 6:24-24 2 came first to Christians when they were gathered together in one place, and it has continued to be true that the reality of the Spirit has most often been experienced in Christian community - the church gathered for prayer, for Bible study, for worship, for fellowship and all the things that she does to serve God in Christ. Jesus' words have been found dynamically true to the experience of the church, "Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them." (Matthew 18:20) Preparing them for his departure, Acts reports Jesus telling his disciples to stay in Jerusalem and "wait for what the Father had promised." (1:4) "...but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be my witnesses." (1:8) Many Christians today doubt their own ability to testify to Jesus and the life-changing reality of His truth and resurrection, but the celebration of Pentecost reminds us that the power and authority to be His witnesses comes not from ourselves but from His Holy Spirit working in and through us. In the weeks prior and subsequent to Pentecost, what better time for the present-day Church at Westwood to wait, fervently praying for ourselves and one another... that each of us may not only receive but exercise the spiritual gifts that come through the abiding presence of His Holy Spirit? Dear Lord, may the movement of your Mighty Spirit fill us with faith and hope in believing, calling us ever closer together in the fellowship of the Church, and inspiring us each day to live and proclaim the good news of salvation in Christ. Amen Blessings, Steve Quarterly Business Meeting/Lunch May 15th Following the Morning Worship Service in the Fellowship Hall Please make plans to attend as we will be voting as the body of Westwood on what process and next steps to follow. Missional living is the ongoing process of ministering to the whole person by sharing the love of Jesus through both word and deed. It is about building relationships and meeting physical, tangible, emotional, and spiritual needs of people in our world in the name of Jesus. Throughout the year, Westwood offers mission education groups for children, youth, women and men. We also partner with a variety of local and national ministries and support them through finances, prayers, volunteers and other tangible resources. We believe that every believer has been given spiritual gifts and natural talents that are to be shared and used for the growth of God’s kingdom. Westwood’s goal is to equip and encourage individuals to find their God-given passion and call to service and to live out that call by “Joining God in His Work.” Westwood Baptist Church 200 Westhigh Street Cary, NC 27513 Phone: 919-469-9393 www.westwoodbc.org Deadline for June Newsletter: May 23, 2016 The Church Office will be closed Monday, May 30th in Observance of Memorial Day Please check the bulletin board in Hall A for Thank You Notes, Invitations and other information that you may be interested in knowing about!
