San Jose Bicyclist & Pedestrian Program Using This Map The City of San Jose Bicyclist & Pedestrian Program works to improve bicylist and pedestrian access and mobility throughout the city. As part of the City’s Department of Transportation, the Bicyclist & Pedestrian Program designs and constructs physical improvements such as sidewalks and bike lanes. To fund projects, the Program actively seeks and administers regional, state, and federal grants. The Program also coordinates with other City programs (such as the Trails program and School Safety Program), as well as with other agencies (such as neighboring cities, the county, and Caltrans). This map provides general guidance on public bicycling facilities in the City of San Jose. While state law allows bicyclists to ride on any public street (excepts posted highways, freeways, and bridges), San Jose has installed several bikeways to improve bicycle access and accomodation. State law defines three types of bikeways: The Bicylist & Pedestrian Program administers the City’s Bicyclists & Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC). BPAC consists of appointed members who provide suggestions and advise on how to improve our community for bicyclists and pedestrians. BPAC meets four times each year. Enhanced bike lanes add additional features such as green colored pavement, a striped buffered area between the bike lane and travel lane, or physical seperators such as delineators, parking, or a mountable curb. San Jose’s Bicyclist & Pedestrian Program also offers free Bicycling Skills Classes. For details, see the Bicycling Skills Classes section of the back of this map. Paved Trail Unpaved Trail Enhanced Bike Lane Enhanced Bike Lane Bike Paths - trails seperated from the road, Bike Route with Sharrows Bike Lanes - on-street facilities with a striped shoulder and signs indicating designated space, Expressways (Bicycles Permitted) Bike Routes - on-street facillities with signs and sometimes with shared lane markings, also known as sharrows. Bike/Pedestrian Bridge/Underpass Before bicycling on a street for the first time, you may want to check traffic speeds and volumes. Busy streets may be more intimidating to novice riders, who may prefer to ride on calmer streets. Use common sense and always follow the rules of the road. When not on paths, always ride on the right side of the street, look before turning or crossing, and signal with your arm before turning or merging. Freeways (Bicycles Prohibited) VTA Light Rail & Station Regional Rail & Station (Caltrain, ACE, and/or Amtrak) Bike Shop Bike Trail - A path shared with pedestrians and completely seperated from traffic. Note - All trails in San Jose are subject to seasonal flooding. Bike Lane - A striped lane for one-way bike travel on a roadway. Enhanced Bike Lane - A bike lane with special treatments to enhance visibility (see detailed description at left). Note - Hedding Street and San Fernando Street Enhanced Bike Lanes to be complete in late 2013. Expressways - Bicycles are permitted on all Santa Clara County expressways. Expressways generally carry high volumes of traffic at high speeds. Although bike lanes exist in some areas along expressways, expressways should only be used by bicyclists with advanced skills. Bike Shops Street Smarts The City of San Jose’s Street Smarts program, run by the City’s Department of Transportation, is a traffic calming program designed to make our streets a safer place and to reduce traffic-related accidents, injuries, and deaths. Visit www.getstreetsmarts.org for more information. In October 2007, the San Jose City Council unamisouly adopted the San Jose Green Vision. This ambitous 15-year plan sets ten goals to create a Sustainable San Jose. Goals include reducing per capita energy use by 50%, diverting 100% of waste from landfills, and creating 25,000 Clean Tech jobs.
