at Centro Stile in Turin, Italy. The enduring charm of the original
1950s’ FIAT® 500 design continues to influence FIAT design today.
500X shares the same brilliant mix of accessibility, simplicity and
driver-centric amenities that have all the earmarks of a new modern
classic. It encourages personal style with a generous offering
of five trim levels and twelve exterior colors. The 500X Street
Series includes the Pop, Easy and Lounge models; the 500X

Housed at the FIAT® Centro Storico in Turin, Italy,
the original Dante Giacosa-designed wooden master
model for the 1957 FIAT ® 500 (shown above) serves
as inspiration for today’s 500X designers. With design
cues that capture the charm and charisma of that very
first “Nuova” Cinquecento, the 2016 FIAT 500X boldly
enters the Crossover segment with the FIAT spirit of
innovation and functionality. Building on the signature
“whiskers and logo” persona, designers and engineers
added more space, utility and ground clearance.
The interiors comfortably seat five while retaining
classic elements like a smooth silhouette, 360-degree
character lines, body-color instrument panels, circular
three-button cluster and chrome door handles.

At the center of a major commitment to manufacturing
reinvestment is the FIAT® 500X, crafted in the newly updated
assembly plant in Melfi, Italy. Outfitted with the Small Wide
platform (one of three principal FCA architectures) and
adhering to World Class Manufacturing (WCM) standards,
Melfi is one of the most advanced vehicle assembly plants
in the world. The vehicle platforms designed for Melfi
allow for compliance with regulatory standards outside
Italy, making for export-ready cars—no need for further
modification. The FIAT 500X exemplifies the company’s
widening global reach—it will be available for sale in more
than 100 countries worldwide.

Room with a view
Leveraging eye-catching, classic FIAT® exterior cues
in the larger and more capable 500X, designers
wanted to make the most of the surrounding
views, as well. They thoughtfully added an available
dual-pane sunroof with a sliding panoramic panel.
Its glass panels match seamlessly with the body
sheet metal, creating a wide, spacious feeling. Light
is easily managed with a manual sunshade.

Disconnecting rear a xle
The disconnecting rear axle helps make the FIAT ® 500X
stand out as a very adaptable, fuel-efficient, AWD-capable
crossover. With its ability to automatically switch from
FWD to AWD and back, it provides a no-brainer boost

Capability. It’s a word that incorporates
several desirables that we tend to
look for in vehicles— power, agility
and, yes, intelligence. FIAT 500X,
with its mix of output, efficiencies and
technological prowess, manages to
check all the boxes that go with the
word. Advanced monitoring, in effect,
allows the 500X to “use its head”
when encountering changing terrains
or conditions— backed up, of course,
by some requisite brawn. The 500X
offers advanced traction options, all
with one goal in mind: a better drive.
FIAT 500X is the first in the 500 family
to offer the confidence of All-Wheel
Drive (AWD), and this new generation
drive system brings new functionality and
improvements over conventional AWD
systems. It features a disconnecting rear
axle that helps to improve fuel efficiency
by automatically selecting Front-Wheel
Drive (FWD) or AWD when necessary.
It completely removes power to the
rear axle when FWD performance is
adequate during regular conditions.

Activated by selecting the Traction+ mode on the
FIAT Dynamic Selector, this system uses Electronic
Stability Control (ESC),1 braking system management
and engine response optimization to enhance driving
when conditions are such that a driving wheel isn’t
tracking—such as rain-soaked or snowy roads.
Basically, Traction+ gives the wheel with better grip
more to go on: when there’s little or no grip on one
wheel, the control unit brakes the spinning wheel,
enabling the transfer of torque to the gripping wheels,
allowing the vehicle to gain traction.
The available, technologically advanced FIAT 500X
AWD system works through a variable wet clutch
located in the rear drive module. This clutch knows
and supplies the right amount of torque for whatever the weather, roads or driver throws at it,
be it slippery conditions or an aggressive launch.
The system requires no input from the driver—all
actions (including AWD activation) are intelligently,
seamlessly engaged based on conditions and drive
style. And while the system boasts leading traction
management advances, it also works to improve
dynamic handling.

ever-changing conditions makes getting behind the wheel that
much sweeter. The FIAT ® Dynamic Selector helps you make the
most of the road ahead with three customized modes for optimal
performance. The basic Auto mode is designed for the everyday,
routine stuff—it will smooth things out to help optimize fuel
efficiency, emissions and comfort.

For those who’d prefer a little more road-feel, a little more
control, the FIAT Dynamic Selector has your number. In
Sport mode, the Electronic Stability Control1 and steering
calibrations are tuned for a sportier feel and faster driving
response. Additionally, the 500X Sport mode optimizes the
transmission shift points for improved performance and
acceleration feel in both FWD and AWD.
Driving outside the lines? The Traction+ mode maximizes
low-speed traction—the kind you need when things get
a little slick or bumpy. It all works by providing additional
wheel-slip through specially tuned chassis controls and
a more direct engine response. After all, true adventure is
equal parts of getting in to and out of things.

Every design discipline mixes form and function, but design longevity
requires a certain X-factor—design that not only serves a purpose
but creates some chemistry, as well. We see it in the lasting appeal
of modern furniture design that utilizes simple, clean lines and geometric
shapes. And, of course, we see it in FIAT® design. The designers started
with a goal that many carmakers leave only to the engineers: to create
