September 2009 - 15th District PTA
15th District Office • 319 South 15th Street • Louisville, KY 40203 • (502) 485-3535 every child. one voice. September 2009 President’s Piece Back-to-School Blues? Now that school is in full swing, I can honestly say, “Thank goodness summer is over!” Like many of you, I juggled multiple family activity schedules with grace under pressure. Transporting kids from one camp to the next, all while keeping them occupied, is definitely a full-time job. Let’s be honest—aren’t you glad to hand over your little darlings to their schools and teachers by August 1, let alone August 13? And there was nothing like the week before school, when we all went crazy trying to find the best sale on supplies. Confession time: I am a school supply junkie. To me, there is nothing like a sale on scissors, glue, tissue, and new lunchboxes to put a smile on my face. Need five folders, get ten! Need pencils? Get five packs! So when you see me, don’t make fun of my Hello Kitty lunchbox. You just wish you had bought one for yourself. On a more serious note, I’m sure you all have been feeling a bit overwhelmed since school has started. We’ve all had to establish new routines; go to bed earlier; get up earlier; go back to wearing uniforms (for some); argue about what to wear (for others); and, of course, do homework. Maybe this is your child’s first year in school as a kindergartner, and after the back-to-school breakfast that the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) hosted at your school, you were thinking, what’s next? For some of you, your schools are just now kicking off their membership campaign. Even if the membership numbers are high, you still need to recruit parents to become members. For inspiration on how to increase parent involvement, go to the National PTA Web site. It offers an idea bank and the Three for Me Program. If you feel at a loss for what else to do, contact the 15th District PTA Office. We always have something going on, from the Clothing Assistance Program (CAP) to advocacy to Reflections. Parent involvement is the key to a student’s success. Take the time to ask your members what they would like the major PTA project to be this school year. Engage the teachers, and create a positive dialogue on how your PTA will make a difference at the school. Don’t give in to the back-to-school blues. You’ve had your break, and now it’s time for us to get back to work. Just remember to have fun while doing it, and if that means carrying a cool new lunchbox, I say, go for it! Myrdin Thompson President Getting to Know Andy Treinen, Our Honorary Membership Ambassador Andy Treinen is from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he grew up with two brothers and attended Catholic schools. He went to college at the University of Cincinnati. He met his wife and began his media career in Cincinnati, where he began in sports (behind-the-scenes work). He has also been the play-by-play voice of the Cincinnati Bearcat Football and Basketball Teams. His career led him to Milwaukee, where he worked as an on-air sports reporter and then became a news anchor. Andy and his family moved to Louisville and began working at WHAS11 in 2006. He is currently the news anchor on Good Morning Kentuckiana weekdays from 5 to 7 a.m. Andy and his wife, Wendy, have two girls—Ella, age 7, and Mia, age 5. Ella attended Tully Elementary, and now both girls attend Stopher Elementary, where Andy is actively involved as a PTA member and a classroom helper. He is passionate about helping students. Andy served as a mentor in the YMCA’s YNOW Program, which serves girls and boys ages 10 to 15 whose parents are incarcerated. He says it was a fulfilling experience in which he learned a lot about young people and their need for adults in their life who keep their word and care about them. Serving as a mentor in this program is a one-year commitment, and he encourages others to look into this opportunity to serve. Andy and his family spend time doing fun activities, such as boating, jet-skiing, camping, and relaxing at Lake Cumberland. He loves sports and has served as assistant basketball coach at Stopher Elementary. He is also an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. He also cheers for University of Louisville and University of Kentucky teams, except when they are playing against his alma mater, the University of Cincinnati. Andy is very excited to be the face of the 15th District PTA for the next two years. He is available to come to events at your school and help in any way he can to help promote the PTA, increase membership, and advocate for children. If you would like to invite Andy to come to a function at your school, contact Theresa Mayfield, fourth vice president, 15th District PTA, and she will check his availability. Theresa’s contact information is on the back of the newsletter. Welcome aboard, Andy! We are excited to have you as a part of our team! September Is Membership Month Let’s get excited— school has finally started. Each school should have posters of Andy Treinen, our honorary membership ambassador. Now more than ever, PTA membership is important. We would like to thank every school that has achieved the first goal of PTA membership—having 100 members by August 15. It is not an easy feat getting parents to join when they also have to purchase uniforms and school supplies. So we would like to thank every local unit for their extra effort. Time is of the essence. Don’t forget— if your PTA’s membership is equal to or greater than last year’s by September 15, your local PTA will be entered in a drawing. Also, use Grandparents Day as a time to engage your students’ grandparents and encourage them to join the PTA. Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day was established in 1985 to set aside one day just for our students. The goal is to send the message to each student that he or she is a special and unique individual who is respected and loved. Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day also makes the public aware of the educational and personal needs of children and the role they play as our most important resource. Celebrate Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day on September 22, 2009, and then tell us about what you did to make the students at your school feel special. If you can’t celebrate on the official day, hold a Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day event when it fits in your calendar. Here are examples of how two schools celebrated Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day. Both of these schools received recognition at this year’s Kentucky PTA Convention/Leadership Conference for having Outstanding Programs and Projects. Chancey Elementary School Remember that with each member who joins your PTA, you could have a new person to volunteer in such activities as Picture Day and fall festivals. We have high hopes that adults and children will become PTA members. Students were greeted by cheering teachers and staff as they entered the school building. Every student received a letter detailing why he or she is a star. Teachers read excerpts from the student letters, or if students were able to read, they read them on their own. Don’t be bashful; join the PTA! We cannot do it without you! If you need anything, let us know. We are here to help you. St. Matthews Elementary School Alisha Pasley, Second Vice President Need Board Training? I will be happy to come to your school to do a board training anytime during this school year. This training usually takes about two hours and is very valuable for your board and principal. It will help you get your school year off to a great start. To schedule a training or for more information, please call me at 895-6004 or e-mail me at [email protected]. Please give me at least three dates so we can find a date that is good for all of us. I look forward to hearing from you. Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day was celebrated by teaching students about healthy snacks and nutrition. Partnering with a local natural and organic grocery, students tasted healthy foods in a mock farmers’ market that was set up in the gym. Information on nearby farmers’ markets and healthy eating were provided to the students as well. For more ideas on how to celebrate Kentucky PTA Kids’ Day, go to www.pta.org or contact me, the 15th District PTA Office, or the Kentucky PTA Office. Have fun and be creative as you plan ways to make your school’s students feel special! PTA Awards Opportunities Welcome to the 2009-10 school year. This year, your local PTA will be involved in many programs and activities. Your PTA will have outstanding volunteers and educators. You will have some exceptional students and some talented writers. Don’t keep these assets to yourselves. Share them with others, and maybe win an award! The 15th District PTA Board wants to know about those wonderful assets that your local PTA has. Acknowledge your PTA’s talents by taking a moment and applying for some of the many awards available through the district and state PTAs. Forms for applying for awards are found in the Kentucky PTA Leaders’ Notebook. You will also find explanations and deadlines for awards in upcoming issues of our newsletter. It’s never too early to start working on these award applications! Finally, plan now to join us at our District Awards Ceremony in May to celebrate your PTA’s accomplishments for this year. Good luck on an award-winning year! If you have any questions about awards, feel free to contact me. Tomi Given, Awards Chairman Local Unit Shout-Outs • The Conway Middle School PTA signed up more than 100 members at Conway’s Open House on August 3. • The Indian Trail Elementary PTA was the first PTA in the 15th District to sign in at the Kentucky PTA Convention/Leadership Conference. Participate in the Reflections Pro- gram, which is designed to enrich the art education of students. The theme for this year is “Beauty Is ….” Each student may enter in any of the following six art areas. Challenged students can enter in each area in the Challenged category. • Literature • Musical Composition • Photography • Visual Arts • Dance Choreography • Film/Video Production We no longer have the Dance Individual or Dance Group categories. Each student enters one of the following age categories: • Primary—Preschool through grade two • Intermediate—Grades three through five • Middle/Junior—Grades six through eight • Grades nine through twelve Local PTAs can submit entries to the 15th District PTA by October 22, 2009. A school can submit one entry per grade in each of the six categories. Example: A PTA can enter once in third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade (which is the Intermediate category) in the category of Music. It can also enter once in preschool, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade (which is the Primary category) in Music, and so forth. Packets of information and forms were sent out in August to all PTAs, principals, art teachers, Reflections chairmen, Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) coordinators, music teachers, English teachers, technology teachers, and dance/physical education (PE) teachers. Make the Reflections Program a part of your PTA. For more information, call Sharon Whitworth at 485-7450. Superintendent’s PTA Membership Club Opportunity Several years ago, we started the Superintendent’s PTA Membership Club for people who do not have any children in school but just want to be a part of the PTA. PTA membership is one way of bringing attention to the cause of public education. We ask you to join the largest children’s advocacy group in the United States, with more than 5 million members and 23,000 units. Your membership will help support campaigns at every grade level. PTAs offer more than just bake sales and festivals. We provide training for parents and caregivers. We lobby at the local, state, and national levels concerning issues that are important to education. We provide an army of volunteers to support school and district initiatives. If you are already participating in the PTA, thank you for your time and support. If not, please take a moment to fill out the membership form below. For a small investment of $5, you can provide support to all Jefferson County public schools. Celebrate PTA Healthy Lifestyles Month in November, and you could win $1,000 for your PTA! Help improve the health of your community. Physical activity and good nutrition help equip children for learning and a lifetime of health. This November, plan an event that promotes healthy habits among students and families, and your PTA could receive up to $1,000 to support those plans. Application deadline: 5 p.m. EDT, Friday, September 11, 2009* Go to www.PTA.org/HealthyLifestyles for award application details, event planning resources, and great event and activity ideas. *Local PTAs in good standing may apply. Sandy Rutledge, Kentucky PTA president, helps fill orders for JCPS students receiving new uniforms at CAP during Back-to-School Blitz Week. 4 15th District PTA Newsletter Hats Off to CAP! The 15th District PTA CAP is off to a running start. We opened for appointments on July 7 and held our Back-to-School Blitz the week of July 27. As of that date, we have clothed 2,030 students from more than 1,000 families. Most students received new uniforms, and all students received new socks, underwear, and a belt. This program could not succeed without the help from our local PTAs. We are always in need of gently used clothing from infant to adult sizes—and not just uniforms because we clothe the entire family from our Family Room. We also help families affected by fires, floods, and other events that cause them to lose their home and belongings. We supply them with donated towels and sheets. Be sure to send volunteers on your appointed days and hold a clothing drive once or twice a year. This summer, we had teenagers from across the United States volunteer with us for four work-packed days. They were a part of the Catholic Heart Workcamp. In the summer, we also have workers from Aerators, KentuckianaWorks, and the Catholic Charities Kentucky Office for Refugees. They sort, wash, box, and hang clothes. Thousands of socks have been rolled and underwear separated in preparation for the year. We also had board members and their children volunteer during their summer break. We had students working at CAP at 5 a.m. for two local morning show broadcasts. Thank you to Male High School for sending volunteers for one of the early mornings and some Eastern High School graduates who decided to give up some summer break sleep for the other early morning. During Blitz Week, we were also able to give away 500 books, thanks to a partnership between the 15th District PTA and Scholastic Books. There were lots of smiles on the faces of children and adults as they picked out a book to call their very own. Today, across Jefferson County, there are many families reading and enjoying a good book together! The following companies also donated bags for the new clothes to be placed in: the Big Lots off of Shelbyville Road, the Best Buy in St. Matthews, and the Middletown Kroger. We are always in need of more bags throughout the school year. Just give me a call if you have bags to donate. We also received a very generous donation of new shoes from the Kentucky Chapter Association of Legal Administrators. They went very quickly and were greatly appreciated by the families. If you have any questions about volunteering or donating, please contact me. Fundraise Responsibly As active PTA members, our goal is to enhance the education of our children and all children. PTA is not a fundraising organization, but we find that fundraising is often what we are asked to do. Fundraising is okay, but we need to do it responsibly. Establish goals, and then fundraise in order to meet those goals. Remember that you don’t have to continually raise money and that, according to Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) policy, PTAs may only have one main fundraiser. Some fundraising companies may tell you that dealing with one company for more than one fundraiser is considered as just one main fundraiser, but this is not correct. Example: 1 PTA-sponsored catalog fundraiser + 1 PTA-sponsored cookie dough campaign = 2 main PTA fundraisers, which is against JCPS policy Good luck, and have a fantastic school year! Traci Priddy, Third Vice President Paula Wolf CAP Coordinator 485-7062 (during office hours) [email protected] More CAP Happenings Both adults and children look over books that were part of the Scholastic Books and 15th District PTA Book Giveaway at CAP during Back-toSchool Blitz Week.
