P r e s i d e n t ’ s
M e s s a g e
Dear Members,
t is hard to believe that I am writing my last President’s Letter. This has been an
amazing year and an incredible honor to serve as the New Jersey ASID Chapter
President. It has been a journey of growth, not only on a professional level, but
also on a personal level as well. During the past three years, I have traveled to three
National Conferences and two Leadership Conferences. I have taken the responsibility of being our state’s representative very seriously and along the way I have met
some remarkable people and have had the time of my life. As chapter presidents our
national headquarters rely on our input and our feedback. I hope that in some small
way that I have made a contribution.
I
As my term comes to a close I am so very excited about our September meetings. Our new member reception
will be held at IPF Furniture in Paterson in September. We hope that all of our board members both incoming and
outgoing along with our committee chairs will join us in welcoming our newest chapter members. This is a wonderful
opportunity to encourage the involvement of our new members to join our committees. Rona Spiegel and Steven
Levy asked me to join the Trade Show Committee when I attended my new member reception ten years ago. It
was the nicest invitation to become involved with our chapter, and I will always be grateful to them for their
encouragement and friendship.
Our Community Service Committees have been very busy this summer. Katie’s House, which is a home for young
adults with disabilities in Newton, is coming along beautifully. Due to the dedication of our designers and industry
partners who have volunteered and teamed up to redesign this very special home, Katie’s House will be completed
this fall. Our Chairs for Charity Auction and Gala is rescheduled for the Spring – this exciting event will be held
in March, 2007. This new date will allow the committee to more fully develop some exciting opportunities that
simply would not have been an option with the original September date. The proceeds of this event and auction
will benefit the redesign of two hospice facilities, Newark Beth Israel and Monmouth Medical Center. The
design teams have been meeting throughout the summer working on the details of the redesign of these two facilities. I hope that all of you will join us at the auction and gala. The generosity of our membership has never been
more evident than with their dedication to our community service projects. I am so proud and grateful to all of
you who have devoted countless hours and have given so selflessly. For more information about these community service projects and all chapter updates, please refer to our website.
Our Program Committee has been planning the September Storyteller’s program meeting this is my last meeting
as your Chapter President. This storytellers program which includes a panel of distinguished designers is a tradition that Gale Youngworth, ASID had begun in her presidency. At this meeting I will pass the gavel to Mary
Sferra, ASID the new NJ Chapter President and I will become the newest member of the Council of Presidents,
aka the Past Presidents Club.
I wish Mary all the best for a successful term as your Chapter President. I look forward to this coming year. I
know that Mary and the new board members will do a phenomenal job. Again, I want to thank you all for your
confidence, support and friendship, but most importantly thank you for this amazing honor to have served as
the NJ ASID Chapter President.
Warmest Regards,
Diane Durocher, ASID
President of the NJASID Chapter

ot fun in the summertime…just as the song says, ASID is heating up
with plans for the year ahead!
In July, the incoming Board of Directors will be traveling to Washington, DC
to attend the annual Chapter Leadership conference. We are expecting the
conference to be a vital, dynamic, and intense training in tactics to deliver
the best possible chapter to you, our members. A recap of the conference will
appear in the Fall issue, so stay tuned.
September will kick off the new year for NJ ASID activities, with the third
annual Storytellers event, Chairs for Char ity, and several other wonderful
programs now in the planning stage. Check out the Calendar of Events, and as always, watch your
email for additional announcements and invitations!
Katie’s House is fully under way now, and we anticipate completion of the house this fall.
See the article in this issue for an update. Any Industry Partner who would like to jump in, there
are still several items needed, and your participation would be warmly welcomed!
Congratulations to all our design award winners and the Industry Partners on those projects!
Read on throughout this issue for more detail and some great photos of the winners. New Jersey’s
talented student designers made a great showing at the June event, and had the opportunity to
showcase their award-winning work as well.
While I always enjoy the somewhat slower pace summer brings, I do miss the meetings, committees, and events in July and August while we are in recess. Being an active volunteer within our
organization has been a tremendous benefit to me in many ways. Most importantly, it has
given me the opportunity to build a network – a true network of professionals whom I can refer
and whom I hope will refer me. By the way, that network also includes other designers whom I
know I can rely upon for advice or opinions, or referrals to sources, as well as simply others to
talk shop with.
On behalf of the chapter, I’d like to welcome all the Inter ior Design graduates from Kean
University, Brookdale College, and Berkeley College into the fold of the professional design community. Please let me personally invite you to take advantage of the fellowship our chapter has to
offer – please make it a priority for your professional development to attend the chapter meetings. You will find a wealth of information, friendship, and resources to help you transition from
student to designer. Need a source for something? Don’t hesitate to ask some of the more seasoned
designers – we are always more than happy to give you a referral to our trusted and valued Industry
Partners!
Enjoy what’s left of summer, and make it a point to get to the fabulous upcoming chapter events!

KITCHEN:
Editor’s Note: On July 15, the talented and dedicated designers
who have teamed up to work on Katie’s House met to make formal
design presentations to Katie’s House, Inc. Founder Evelyn
Dudziec, along with Katie and other family members. These
presentations were a product of much creativity and hard work
not only on the designs but also on securing donations of goods
and services from our Industry Partners as well as other trade
resources who have been willing to help our efforts. What is
especially inspiring is the designers who have worked hard to
get donations for rooms other than their own, and who have
banded together to share resources, for the good of the entire
Katie’s House project.
Debbie Wessely secured a donation of reclaimed cabinets
through her contact at Signature Kitchens, in Hawthorne, NJ.
Below is a recap from that meeting emailed to all of us from
Carrie Oesmann:
Wow! The follow-up meeting for Katie’s House was an incredible presentation of the heart and soul of our committee. I can’t
tell you how touched I was by the amount of effort you all put
into creating your spaces and acquiring donations. I always knew
that NJASID designers had a lot of heart and this was a pure
demonstration of your desire to create a beautiful space for a
wonderful cause.
Here is a brief, I hope, recap of how much you have accomplished and what else is needed to complete our goal.
We are still not sure the style or color of these cabinets, so
Gwen Nagorsky has designed a neutral palette with some punches
of interest and color, using beiges with green and red tile accents
in the floor and backsplash.
• Floor Tile: Wayne Tile, in Wayne
• Tumbled Marble Backsplash: Mediterranean Tile, in Fairfield
• Silestone Countertops: Selective Surfaces
Amazingly, Gwen was also able to secure a donation of
major appliances, all in white.
• Refrigerator, Dishwasher, Gas Range and Hood, Microwave:
Renovator’s Resource, Fairfield, NJ
• Stainless Steel Sink: Hardware Designs, in Fairfield
• Brushed Nickel Faucet: Kohler, through Palermo
DINING
ROOM:
Laura McNeice, Miriam Balbiani and Beata Zavatski worked
with Gwen Nagorsky on securing donations for the Dining Room.
cont. on page 16
Important note: A tentative date of Saturday, September 30
has been suggested for the “Paint Party”. After reviewing our
options it was decided that we would keep the attendance to
this event internal to our committee and other close persons we
would like to invite. It was suggested that Conrad take responsibility for taping off all the newly restored trim, etc.
Carrie has secured a donation of 15 gallons of paint from
Sherwin Williams. She asks the designers contact her with the
final paint colors/finishes so that she can coordinate the list.
Carrie has been in contact with Stanley Furniture to secure
donations of casegoods. She is requesting designers who need
pieces to review the Stanley website, (www.stanleyfurniture.com)
and give her a list of items that might work in their spaces. She
will then pass this list along to Jay Lorenzo, her sales rep, to see
if he can come up with similar items that are slightly “dinged”.
Jay hopes that these items can be obtained for “next to nothing”
or perhaps even just shipping charges. So please get a list to
Carrie ASAP so she can secure these important pieces.
Now that the palette is confirmed for the house Carrie would
like to coordinate a meeting at J. Herbro, Corp. who has
generously offered remnants for the project. The issue was brought
up to Evelyn that although she would prefer wall to wall in the
upstairs areas we are having difficulty acquiring labor donations
for carpet installation. So it will probably be necessary to use
remnants that area cut to fit the areas and bound. The priority
will be to acquire a donation of carpet install for the stairs!
Feldman Brothers has donated two ceiling fans to the house,
for use in two of the bedrooms.

C e r t i f i c a t i o n
U p d a t e
he New Jersey Coalition for Inter ior Design
Legislation would like to congratulate the many
designers who have made the effort to send in their
applications to become certified. Your efforts demonstrate
not only your commitment to the highest professional standards of interior design but also support the validity and
importance of the interior design profession.
T
The New Jersey Interior Design Evaluation and Examination
Committee is working diligently to assess the applications
that have been submitted and, to their credit, are carefully
following the letter of the law to assure that “qualified” interior designers are certified. The last date for submitting an
application for certification for “grandfathering” is April 27,
2007. For those of you who have not yet applied NJCIDL highly
recommend that you submit your applications at least two
weeks prior to that date to insure review and possible resubmittal, if necessary.
Mediterranean Tile
Some of you have already had your applications returned
to be resubmitted because there were missing pieces of information on your applications. It is very important to complete
the applications accurately and honestly in order to be considered for certification. Often it is a minor piece of missing
information such as:
Under the grandfathering application:
1) The designer forgets to indicate that they were a resident of New Jersey in 2002 when the bill was signed into law.
2) Often interior designers who own their own businesses
do not sufficiently document projects over the required tenyear period to validate 17,500 hours of full time employment.
Ten years or more of full-time work is often difficult to verify
as many projects or clients no longer exist or have relocated.
Designers should attempt to do the best they can to give accurate contact names or to present backup documentation to
verify their work on those particular projects.
In general:
3) Sometimes designers do not submit three projects that
adequately demonstrate the interior designer’s knowledge
of diversified work. Diversified work does not mean a variety
of type of projects like medical offices, residential spaces,
restaurants, etc. nor does it mean the size of various projects

but the list of “diversified activities that an interior designer
performs.” “Diversified interior design services” means administration of interior design documents including drawings,
schedules and specifications which pertain to the design
intent and planning of interior spaces – furnishings, layouts,
non-load bear ing partitions, fixtures, cabinetry, lighting,
outlet and switch location and type, finishes, materials and
interior construction not affecting the building systems. The
three projects combined that a designer chooses to submit
should demonstrate the knowledge and the performance of
every item on the list of design services.
4 ) O t h e r d e s i g n e r s h a v e n o t u s e d a “c e r t i f i e d d e s i g n
professional” to recommend their work. A ”certified design
professional” means a licensed architect, a licensed
engineer or a certified interior designer from another state
(until there are interior designers certified in New Jersey).
If you do not know an architect or an engineer, call one
in your area and ask to take them to lunch to review your
portfolio and construction documents to verify your interior design knowledge. Most will be willing to be taken out
to lun ch a n d t o m e e t a new co nt act fo r fu t u re proje c t s .
Seize this opportunity to network.
Additionally, some interior designers seeking certification
not under the “grandfathering clause” who were educated
several years ago and who did not graduate from FIDER accredited schools will need to verify their course curriculum. This
is often difficult since catalogs of course work are no longer
available and instructors may not be available to verify the
curriculum. In these circumstances it may be prudent to apply
under the “grandfathering clause” while it is still in effect.
Many interior designers are intimidated by the process of
certification and find it is time consuming to gather all the

Laura found a beautiful, slightly-used sideboard for storage along
the side wall.
They brought a choice of chandeliers for Evelyn to review and
she selected the more casual option of a white-washed wrought
iron version with opalescent glass bowls. This fixture will need
to be rewired. The fixture is a donation from Washington Antiques
and Design Center, Washington, NJ.
The team will be using a fabric remnant from Gwen’s archives
that was approved by Evelyn. The fabric is a large-scale floral
with an olive-green background. Other colors are gold and
burgundy red tones. They plan on keeping the window treatments to a simple valance mounted inside the beautiful, refinished wood trim. Gwen has a friend who will be doing the window
treatments.
A tone-on-tone, trellis patterned carpet in olive green will
be bound as an area rug. Donated by J&S Flooring in Morristown.
Laura has acquired the services of a faux painter for the walls,
she presented several sample boards to Evelyn so she could
selected a finish/technique. Services donated by Kevin McPheeters,
Chapel Road Designs.
Gwen acquired a light oak, round, butcher-block table from
Washington Antiques and Design Center. They also offered 6
chairs to complete the set in the same wood tone with rush seats.
The chairs were offered at less than wholesale; $38 each.
Then team selected two pieces of artwork for their space. The
first is a framed antique scene of the countryside with a gold
frame. The second is a larger print donated by Jeannie Shotland
of Art Plus, Springfield, NJ. Gwen is looking to secure a dressier
gold frame from her resource, she’ll keep us updated.
Finally, Gwen suggested a small profile barstool for the
pass-through. These stools could be purchased at Bed Bath
and Beyond for $15 each. Gwen is looking into the possibility of
getting the stools as a donation.

Mary Brennan reached out to her contacts at Mediterranean
Tile & Marble in Fairfield for an exquisite tile mural, which they
graciously offered at no cost! They also provided Mary with
enough 6x6 floor tile for the powder room, which coordinates
with the kitchen floor.
Mary also secured a donation of a custom built vanity from
Metropolitan Cabinet Works in Fair Lawn, and a mirrored door
(faux medicine cabinet) from Everything in Glass in Butler,
which will hide the electrical/alarm panel.
Gwen Nagorsky, Directions in Design, is donating the polished
silver faucet set.
Mary will also be using a small framed print donated by Art
Plus.

Loretta DeSantis and Camille Waldron were unable to attend
the meeting. They will be continuing the gold wall color from
the Dining Room. Carrie has sent them a swatch of the fabric
that is being used in the Dining Room for their reference.

Gwen brought some items that she thought could be used in
the space; a tray style cocktail table and a Queen Anne Style
round side table. Evelyn has a settee and ottoman that could be
recovered and used in the space. Carrie will email photos of
these items to the LR team.
Carrie also has a donation of a large print and two marble
lamps if the LR team wishes to use them. Gwen has a donation
of two wing chairs from a client that need to be reupholstered
if Camille and Loretta wish to use them in their plan.
Evelyn was concerned about privacy in the Living Room and
Alicia Shearer volunteered to try and secure a donation of shades
for this area.
Carrie and Mary will be looking for a presentation from the
Living Room Team by the end of July.
FOYER
Linda Klein has volunteered to do the space. She was unable
to attend the meeting.
The space will require a new lighting fixture, area rug and
some type of storage for coats, etc., as the closet was lost with
the addition of the powder room. When Linda met with Evelyn
she took the original hardware for the doors in the house looking
to get them refinished.
Several pieces of artwork were offered by Art Plus for this
space.

Every choice should be this clear. VISTA® Window Film is the
obvious choice for designers and discerning consumers
who demand the extraordinary. Your priceless works of art,
delicate fabrics, ad carefully selected furniture all need
VISTA’s protection to block out virtually all the cumulative
damage from ultraviolet rays as well as heat and glare.
The choice is yours.
Carrie was able to secure a donation of a remnant for the stairs
and upstairs landing from J. Herbro, Corp., in Fairfield.
We are still in need of carpet installation for the stairs, landing
and bedroom areas.
We will be using a large vertical floral print donated by Art
Plus. Art Plus generously offered a simple framing for up to 6
prints.
Expect the extraordinary.
Carrie’s carpenter will be unable to successfully match the
turning of the newel post. And a close-enough match through
stock items has not yet been found. She suggested adding a small
knee-wall instead. This is under consideration by Conrad. Carrie
will continue to search out other options.
Conrad has asked if a carpenter can match the existing trim,
due to the fact that he will needing additional lengths as the
new doors and windows are installed. Carrie is checking into
this with her carpenter.
Carrie has secured a donation of a lighting fixture for the
upstairs hallway.

Suzy has also secured a donation of a Kohler undermount sink
and polished nickel faucet with coordinating light fixtures will
be flanking a white-washed oval mirror that was found by Debbie
Wessely at HomeGoods. The cost of the mirror is $50.
Suzy is suggesting SW6211 for the wall color.
Suzy would like to use a white Carrera marble for the counter
top and matching tile for the floor. Evelyn is requesting that the
floor surface be honed for safety reasons.
FRONT BEDROOM (DOUBLE)
Elaine Zagha-Weg, ASID and Lisa Campoli, Student Member,
joined our committee just last week and have agreed to team up
and take on the front bedroom that will house two residents.
They will also meet with Carrie and J. Herbro to select an appropriate remnant for the floor.
They are still in need of ceiling fans w/light kits.

Diane Durocher and Sara Robertson worked as a team with
student member. Sara was able to acquire a generous donation
from Ballard Designs for all the bedroom furniture, which includes
a daybed, chair, side table and armoire.
The palette they are suggesting for their space is again a neutral
with the use of a seafoam green/blue as the accent color in the
fabrics that Diane hopes to get donated by Kravet Fabrics.
Their wall color is SW2263 Skyway Blue.
They took advantage of the multitude of remnant fabrics brought
to the meeting by Gwen and Carrie. They will be using a large
pattern sheer fabric and small check to create a neutral palette
for the space. Elaine is hoping to secure a donation of window
shades for the space from her resources.
They will also be using a mixture of gold and brushed nickel
lamps donated by Carr ie Oesmann, Bailiwick Design and
decorative hooks salvaged from Hardware Designs by Gwen.
The team will get a list of possible casegoods they would like
to use to Carrie ASAP!

They would like to use two swing arm sconces that Sara is
donating. But they would need to add two junction boxes for this.
They may need to be rewired to run the electrical externally.
Debbie Wessely is looking into an electrician that may be willing
to donate some time.
Diane is hoping to get the workroom services donated.
Swift Electric in Teterboro has donated a white ceiling fan

Holly George and Debbie Wessely are working together with
Student Member Patty Costa on Katie’s Room. The room palette
is pinks, greens, orange and yellows.
Evelyn informed them that they we thinking of making the
egress door into a 6’ slider. The team asked if she would consider
making it a single door and small window instead. This would
help with wall space.
The team is suggesting fabrics from Kravet, but since these
may no longer be available for free, they may have to find
other alternatives. Diane Durocher will see if she can get her
representative to donate at least the main floral pattern. Holly
and Debbie were able to find some other coordinates in the fabric
remnants.
Carrie suggested contacting other IPs to see if they may be
willing to donate fabrics. She will put out a few feelers. They are
also in need of 5 yards of white sheer fabric for the canopy.
Carrie also suggested looking into the Stanley Furniture line
to see if there was an acceptable daybed, since Ballard design
will only offer a 40% discount on the purchase.
suggested looking at a few other less expensive lines to see if
someone else would donate.
They are still in need of ceiling fans w/light kits.
Carrie suggested they come with her to J. Herbro to see if a
remnant could be found for carpeting.
They will be using two posters for their space, both donated
by Art Plus with simple framing.
Carrie will also contact Cox Manufacturing to see if they would
be willing to donate a storage ottoman if the team cannot find
a workroom to donate their services.

Editor’s Note: Karla Trincanello and Ria Gulian have just
updated us on Chairs for Charity. This will be the Spring’s
premiere MUST-ATTEND event! Thanks, Karla and Ria, for
allowing us to follow the astounding efforts of this dedicated
committee!
Our wonderful hospital design teams are deep into the
design of each hospice ward and are diligently working to
deadline so that our student renderers will be able to have
boards prepared for the Gala Event, which will take place in
March, 2007, just around the corner. Much appreciation.
Our Gala committee is working hard to prepare a fabulous
event, thank you Diane and Anna Maria.
Chairs, chairs, chairs, we have 32! Great job, Jean and Roz.
To Michael Goldberg and Maureen Mc Mahon, (Ad Journal
Co chairmen) thank you for the valuable information you
brought to our meeting along with your printer as a guest who
was so helpful. All our committees are tirelessly working for
this wonderful cause and we are all so grateful.

committee meetings and general meeting to be in one location on one evening. Thank you, Pat Poland, Lorraine Sciara
and Christina Hall. (Lorraine Sciara is the Director for St.
Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center; Christina Hall
is Vice President of Development; and Pat Poland is Executive
Assistant to Lorraine Sciara)
Great job to all of you for your wonderful reports and work.
The work you are doing for this wonderful cause is heartfelt
by Hospice, the patients, their families and the staff.
Many of our designers and Industry Partners have generously donated fabric and labor for this event. A full list of
those who contributed will follow in a future issue, when a
comprehensive list can be compiled. The committee extends
heartfelt thanks for these contributions.
Newsflash – as we went to press, Karla updated us that we
will also have a chair donated by the Earl of Spencer (Princess
Diana's brother) which he designed for his chair line! We
are hoping to have more celebrity chairs as well. The committee
has also named an Honoree for this event: Risa Margolis
Greenstein, Honoree "A tribute to Rebecca Margolis and St.
Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center". Risa is the
daughter of Rebecca Margolis.
Thank you letter to Hospice
committee members:
Thank you all for an awesome meeting recently! It was
great to see how much we have accomplished for this great
cause but, as you see, still much more to do as well. How
about Audra Frank and her unbelievable donation to pay for
the initial ad journal costs! We are all thankful for her generosity
for this project and we know she is doing it in honor and
memory of her husband, David. Along with this donation,
Audra is responsible for attaining our Honorary Chairman,
Lou Dobbs of CNN. Although he will not be able to attend
because of a conflict of dates, he is happy to be our Honorary
Chairman and we are thrilled to recognize such a notable
person. Kudos to you Audra, for all your hard work.

Mill Supply Division is the perfect
example of the American Dream fulfilled.
What started in 1969 by Alvin Tannenbaum
as a small retail operation that wanted
to go wholesale is today the largest independent fabr icator of Hunter Douglas
products in the Northeast.
Thirty six years later the company is
now run by Lee and Ross Tannenbaum,
brothers and sons of the founder Alvin.
With 110 employees, 12 sales representatives and 60,000 square feet of manufacturing space, it has come a long way
since 1969.
Mill Supply Division has a factory in Hamden, Connecticut
where blinds and shutters are manufactured. One of the many
reasons for the success of the business is the highly trained
sales reps, not one with less than 10 years of experience.
According to Lee, part of the company’s
mission is to highly educate their staff
and the designers that use their products.
Mill has several seminar programs that
they run and they are happy to sponsor
custom training sessions. The company
is committed in every way to working with
ASID. As Lee puts it, “We value our relationships with individual designers. We
know our roots and will never abandon
them.”
One way that Mill Supply Division has
committed to ASID is by acting as the
Silver sponsor for the most recent trade
show at the Birchwood Manor. The Society counts on sponsorship to help offset the costs of such a show and wants to
thank Mill for their generosity.

As far as interesting applications of the product there are
many, but one stands out. Lee’s company works with a designer
whose client regularly entertained the Clintons when they
were in the White House. The Clintons were hosted at a home
on Martha’s Vineyard. Each year as the homeowner and her
designer would prepare to entertain Bill and Hilary, the décor

would change. The designer would take that business to
Mill Supply Division with no doubt that the company could
deliver. Mill would airfreight fabric to Martha’s Vineyard on
very short notice each time this happened and consistently
delivered what was needed. But whether the client is a high
