Large Probe Data Sets - Concept
GPS data from probe vehicles is collected from cellular or GPS
navigation companies.
National Performance Management Research Data Set
 FHWA has purchased access to a national data set of average
travel times. The data is available to States and MPOs as a tool
for performance measurement.
 Consultant access available through States and MPOs.

Large Data Sets – Pros & Cons
Pros
Really good for freeways.
Especially useful if study segments
align well with TMCs (traffic
messaging channel).
Separate Truck Data
Large Data Sets – Pros & Cons
Pros
Really good for freeways.
Especially useful if study segments
align well with TMCs (traffic
messaging channel).
Separate Truck Data
Cons
Can be hard to determine effects in
small segments.
Not recommended for small scale
data collection efforts.
Data aggregation.
Older GPS System – Concept
GPS data collected during
floating car runs using palm
pilot and GPS attachment
Data stored extracted as
CSV and processes in
custom excel spreadsheet
Older GPS System – Pros & Cons
Pros:
It still works surprisingly well.
Still one left in stock on Amazon.
You get to teach a millennial
graffiti.
Older GPS System – Pros & Cons
Pros:
It still works surprisingly well.
Still one left in stock on Amazon.
You get to teach a millennial
graffiti.
Cons:
Unsupported technology
typically requires other extra
effort.
You have to teach a millennial
graffiti.
Video/GPS System – Concept
GPS data collected during floating car
runs using GPS enabled video camera
Lat/Long data extracted as CSV and
processes in vendor software
Video data linked to Lat/Long Data

Video/GPS System – Visualizations
Video/GPS System – Pros & Cons
Pros:
High accuracy of data.
Automated report generation.
Quick visualization of Data.
Video can be useful to review.
Good support.
Video/GPS System – Pros & Cons
Pros:
High accuracy of data.
Automated report generation.
Quick visualization of Data.
Video can be useful to review.
Good support.
Cons:
Depending on corridor length,
floating car travel times runs
will take hours to collect.
Limited size of data set.
Bluetooth Readers – Concept
Series of roadside Bluetooth readers used
to read MAC address from passing mobile
devices.
Truncated MAC address is used for privacy
Matched MAC addresses at different
readers.
Filtering screens out “outliers” which have
unreasonable travel times.

Bluetooth
Readers –
O-D Data
In addition
to travel
time
Bluetooth
readers can
provide
OriginDestination
data.
Bluetooth Readers – Pros & Cons
Pros:
Larger Data Sets.
O-D data available.
Semi-automated report
generation.
Cons:
Bluetooth may not sample
certain populations.
Filtering necessary.
Manual Methods – Concept
Bluetooth Readers – Pros & Cons
Pros:
Never fails.
Everyone seems to have a
stopwatch these days.
Understanding of fundamental
concepts.
