English p. 2 DEutsch s. 9 Michalis Terzis is one of the most important contemporary greek composers. he started his musical career in 1973 by playing songs by Mikis theodorakis, Manos hatzidakis and “new Wave” as well as his own compositions at music theatres in the historical part of Athens beneath the Acropolis. he recorded his irst piece, “hymn for cyprus”, in 1976 using the lyrics of the great greek poet Yannis Ritos. Mikis theodorakis presented Michalis terzis and his work at a large concert at “panathinaiko stadium” in Athens. in 1980 and following years Michalis wrote and recorded many pieces including traditional elegies, epic songs, as well as music for theatre tV and ilm productions. his works have been performed by the most famous greek musicians and singers, including george Dalaras and Dimitra galani. his album “nostimon imar” (twelve greek Folk Dances) was a great success, and its performance was broadcast on television. the ilm score for “limnos the cherished” won the irst prize at the thessalonika Film Festival in 1988 and an award from greek Ministry of culture (Melina Mercouri). Between 1996 and 2001 he released three song collections. his music for the documentary “the Magic of the greek caves”, an international production of the “greek Documentary center” by panos ipfandis was released worldwide (by 40 tV stations including china, india, etc.) in twelve languages, and aired on all lights of Olympic Airways. One of the highlights of his career was the presentation of his symphonic work “the hymn of Athens” in February 1994. the symphony was performed by the greek television symphony Orchestra and choir with Mikis theodorakis as its director. From 2003-2004 he wrote the music for several documentaries on cD and DVD for the greek Ministry of culture and other cultural institutions. he has presented his works in greece and abroad, throughout Europe, the usA, the Middle East, singapore, tokyo and Australia. Ionicos Cosmos greek instrumental Music and Rhythms of ionia - Asia Minor. the music and rhythms contained in this album are well known and very popular among all greeks living anywhere in the world. this music has been created by the greeks of Asia Minor, who for centuries lived in the ancient cradle of ionia, pontos, Aeolia, constantinople – tatavla, smyrna, Aivali, the West coast of Asia Minor and across all the regions of greece, the Aegean sea islands as well as cyprus. Despite the Asia Minor disaster of 1922, which brought devastation and destruction to the greeks, they kept with them that which was most valuable for them - their soul and their culture. Music unites people everywhere, even people from diferent cultures. Musical experience helped neighbouring peoples to live next to each other peacefully for many years. these valuable musical treasures which express the identity of greeks from Asia Minor are the root and the guiding force that accompanies all social events of enjoyment and fun. they also cover the need for deeper communication with the imperishable and authentic elements of life. this collection contains the most representative, famous and beautiful instrumental works of music contained within the great greek musical cosmos of ionia - Asia Minor. in the studio i had the opportunity to collaborate with some excellent musicians of the new generation, who are each important soloists of their own instruments and who ofered me wonderful moments of true creation. the result of this recording is in your hands. i would like to dedicate ionicos cosmos to all of you with all my love and my cordial greetings from Athens. Chasapiko Politiko ‘chasapiko politiko’ means: ‘chasapiko dance from polis’ (for all greeks in this case ‘polis’ means the historical town of Konstantinoupolis (istanbul). the chasapiko is a circle dance similar to the syrtaki, but danced in a slower tempo. Isouna Xipoliti ‘isouna Xipoliti’ means “A woman without shoes”. A woman without shoes simply means she does not have any shoes to wear. the expression is idiomatic and refers to a woman who lives in poverty and is afected by life’s tribulations. some day she meets someone - he wants to help her - but she asks him to buy her all the nice things of the world including luxurious jewellery, so he is in danger of also becoming poor. the song describes in a comical way the greed and extravagances of a woman. Tatavla-Chasapiko ‘tatavla-chasapiko’ means ‘chasapiko Dance from tatavla’. tatavla is (was until 1922) the famous and historic district of Konstantinoupolis called “the greek neighbourhood”, as the turkish inhabitants of ‘polis’ (Konstantinoupolis) referred to tatavla as ‘little Athens’. until today ‘polis’ means Konstantinoupolis (istanbul) for all greeks. Variations of this piece are performed by big orchestras including a brass orchestra in smyrna and also on lesbos island. During festivities this can also be danced by two men. Die Musik vereint Menschen auf der ganzen Welt, auch leute mit unterschiedlichen Kulturen. im allgemeinen half diese musikalische Erfahrung, benachbarten Völkern in Frieden miteinander zu leben. Diese wertvollen musikalischen schätze, die die identität der griechen aus Kleinasien ausdrücken, sind die Wurzeln und Antriebskraft für alle freudigen gesellschaftlichen Anlässe. sie umfassen auch das Bedürfnis nach tieferer Verbindung mit dem unvergänglichen und den Elementen des lebens. 9 Die auf diesem Album präsentierten titel sind die charakteristischen, bekanntesten und schönsten instrumentalstücke des griechischen musikalischen ‚Kosmos von ionien – Kleinasien‘. ich hatte die gelegenheit, im studio mit einigen sehr guten Musikern der neuen generation zusammenzuarbeiten, von denen jeder ein bedeutender solist ist und mit denen ich wunderschöne Momente wahrer Kreativität erlebte. sie halten das Ergebnis dieser Aufnahmen in ihren händen. ionicos cosmos ist für sie, mit meinen allerbesten Wünschen aus Athen. (Für alle griechen, ‚polis‘ bezeichnet hier die historische stadt Konstantinoupolis [Konstantinopel, heute istanbul]). Der chasapiko ist ein Kreistanz und dem sirtaki ähnlich, wird jedoch in einem langsameren tempo getanzt. Eine Redewendung, die eine Frau beschreibt, die in Armut lebt und unter der Mühsal des lebens leidet. Eines tages lernt sie einen Mann kennen, der ihr helfen will. sie bittet ihn, ihr kostbare Dinge wie Juwelen zu kaufen und er läuft gefahr, nun selbst arm zu werden. Das lied beschreibt auf humorvolle Weise die gier und Extravaganz einer Frau. Variationen dieses stückes werden von großen Orchestern gespielt, wie z.B. dem Blasorchester von smyrna und auf der insel lesbos.
