Breast cancer screening
Breast cancer screening means
checking a woman’s breasts for cancer
before there are signs or symptoms of
the disease. Three main tests are used
to screen the breasts for cancer. Talk to
your doctor about which tests are right
for you, and when you should have
them.
• Mammogram. A mammogram is
an X-ray of the breast. Mammograms
are the best method to detect breast
cancer early when it is easier to treat
and before it is big enough to feel or
cause symptoms. Having regular mammograms can lower the risk of dying
from breast cancer. If you are age 50 to
74 years, be sure to have a screening
mammogram every two years. If you
are age 40–49 years, talk to your doctor
about when and how often you should
have a screening mammogram.
• Clinical breast exam. A clinical
breast exam is an examination by a
doctor or nurse, who uses his or her
hands to feel for lumps or other
changes.
• Breast self-exam. A breast selfexam is when you check your own
breasts for lumps, changes in size or
shape of the breast, or any other
changes in the breasts or underarm
(armpit).
Which tests to choose: Having a clinical breast exam or a breast self-exam
have not been found to decrease risk of
dying from breast cancer. Keep in mind
that, at this time, the best way to find
breast cancer is with a mammogram. If
you choose to have clinical breast
exams and to perform breast selfexams, be sure you also get regular
mammograms.
Where Can I Go to Get Screened?
Most likely, you can get screened for
breast cancer at a clinic, hospital, or
doctor’s office. If you want to be
screened for breast cancer, call your
doctor’s office. They can help you
schedule an appointment. Most health
insurance companies pay for the cost
of breast cancer screening tests.
Are you worried about the cost? The
National Breast and Cervical Cancer
Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP)
offers free or low-cost mammograms
and education about breast cancer.

What is the flu? our specialty

The flu is a contagious
respiratory illness
ca use d by influe nza
viruses. It can cause
mild to severe illness,
and at times can lead to
death. The best way to
prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each
year.
Symptoms of flu
People who have the
flu often feel some or all
of these symptoms:
• fever or feeling feverish/chills
• cough
• sore throat
• runny or stuffy nose
• muscle or body aches
• headaches
• fatigue (very tired)
• Some people may
have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more
common in children
than adults.
*It’s important to note
that not everyone with
flu will have a fever.
How flu spreads
Most experts believe
that flu viruses spread
mainly by droplets made
when people with flu
cough, sneeze or talk.
These droplets can land
in the mouths or noses of
people who are nearby.
Less often, a person
might also get flu by
touching a surface or object that has flu virus on
it and then touching
their own mouth, eyes or
nose.

Contagiousness
You may be able to
pass on the flu to someone else before you know
you are sick, as well as
while you are sick.
Most healthy adults
may be able to infect others beginning one day
before symptoms develop
and up to five to seven
days after becoming sick.
Some people, especially children and people
with weakened immune
systems, might be able to
infect others for an even
longer time.
Is the flu serious?
Flu is unpredictable
and how severe it is can
vary widely from one
season to the next depending on many things,
including:
• what flu viruses are
spreading,
• how much flu vaccine is available
• when vaccine is
available
• how many people get
vaccinated, and
• how well the flu vaccine is matched to flu
viruses that are causing
illness.
Vaccine
On Feb. 24, vaccine experts voted that everyone
six months and older
should get a flu vaccine
each year starting with
the 2010-2011 influenza
season.
CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices (ACIP) voted
for "universal" flu vaccination in the U.S. to expand protection against
the flu to more people.
While everyone should
get a flu vaccine each flu
season, it’s especially important that certain people get vaccinated either
because they are at high
risk of having serious
flu-related complications
or because they live with
or care for people at high
risk for developing flu-related complications.

Protect your skin from the sun
Sun Protection
Protection from sun exposure is important all year
round, not just during the
summer or at the beach. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can
reach you on cloudy and
hazy days, as well as bright
and sunny days. UV rays
also reflect off of surfaces
like water, cement, sand,
and snow.
The hours between 10
a.m. and 4 p.m. daylight savings time (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
standard time) are the most
hazardous for UV exposure
in the continental United
States. UV rays are the
greatest during the late
spring and early summer in
North America.
CDC recommends easy
options for sun protection
—Use sunscreen with sun
protective factor (SPF) 15 or
higher, and both UVA and
UVB protection.
Wear clothing to protect
exposed skin.
Wear a hat with a wide
brim for shade.
Wear sunglasses
that wrap around
and block as
close to 100%
of both UVA
and UVB
rays as
possible.

Sunscreen
The sun’s
UV rays can damage
your skin in as little
as 15 minutes. Put on sunscreen before you go outside, even on slightly cloudy
or cool days. Don’t forget to
put a thick layer on all parts
of exposed skin. Get help for

your back.
Clothing
Loose-fitting long-sleeved
shirts and long pants made
from tightly woven
fabric offer the best
protection
from the sun’s
UV rays. A wet
T-shirt offers much
less UV protection than
a dry one.
Darker colors may offer more
protection than
lighter colors.
Hats
For the most protection, wear a hat with a
brim all the way around that
shades your face, ears, and
the back of your neck. A
tightly woven fabric, such as
canvas, works best to protect
your skin from UV rays.
Avoid straw hats with holes
that let sunlight through. A
darker hat may offer more
UV protection.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses that block
both UVA and UVB rays
offer the best protection.
Most sunglasses sold in the
United States, regardless of
cost, meet this standard.
Wrap-around sunglasses
work best because they
block UV rays from sneaking in from the side.
Shade
You can reduce your risk
of skin damage and skin
cancer by seeking shade
under an umbrella, tree, or
other shelter before you
need relief from the sun.
Your best bet to protect your
skin is to use sunscreen or
wear protective clothing
when you’re outside—even
when you’re in the shade.

is to contact your doctor.
Pertussis can cause serious illness in infants, children and adults. The disease
starts like the common cold,
with runny nose or congestion, sneezing, and maybe
mild cough or fever. But
after 1–2 weeks, severe
coughing begins. Infants
and children with the disease cough violently and
rapidly, over and over, until
the air is gone from their
lungs and they're forced to
inhale with a loud "whooping" sound.
The best way to prevent
pertussis is to get vaccinated. In the US, the recommended pertussis vaccine
for children is called DTaP.
Vaccine protection for pertussis, tetanus, and diphtheria can fade with time. Before 2005, the only booster
vaccine available contained
tetanus and diphtheria
(called Td), and was recommended for adolescents and
adults every 10 years. Today
there are boosters for adolescents and adults that contain tetanus, diphtheria, and
pertussis (called Tdap).

número, mayor será la protección. Se debe usar un protector solar con por lo
menos FPS 15.
Vestimenta
Las camisas de mangas
largas y los pantalones largos holgados fabricados con
una tela de tejido cerrado le
ofrecen la mejor protección
contra los rayos UV. Una
camiseta mojada ofrece
menor protección contra los
rayos UV que una seca. Colores oscuros pueden ofrecer
más protección que los
claros.
Si no es práctico utilizar
este tipo de prendas, trate
por lo menos de ponerse una
camiseta o una salida de
baño. Tenga presente que
una camiseta normal ofrece
un nivel de protección
mucho menor que el FPS 15,
así que también use otro
tipo de protección.
Sombreros
Para una mayor protección, póngase un sombrero de ala ancha que
cubra el rostro, las orejas y
la nuca. Una tela de tejido
cerrado, como la

Poisoning prevention tips
We all want to keep our children safe and secure and help
them live to their full potential. Knowing how to prevent
leading causes of child injury,
like poisoning, is a step toward
this goal.
Every day, 374 children in
the United States ages 0 to 19
are treated in an emergency
department, and two children
die, as a result of being poisoned. It’s not just chemicals
in your home marked with
clear warning labels that can
be dangerous to children.
Everyday items in your
home, such as household
cleaners and medicines, can be
poisonous to children as well.
Active, curious children will
often investigate—and sometimes try to eat or drink—anything that’s left out and within
their reach. Thankfully, there
are ways you can help poisonproof your home and protect
the children you love.
Child injuries are preventable. Keep medicines and toxic
products, such as cleaning solutions, in locked or childproof
cabinets.
Know the number. Put the
nationwide poison control center phone number, 1-800-2221222, on or near every telephone in your home. You
should also program it into
your cellular phone. You can
reach poison control centers 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
Call poison control if you
think a child has been poisoned and if they are awake
and alert. Call 9-1-1 if you have
a poison emergency and your
child has collapsed or is not
breathing.
Don’t keep it if you don’t
need it. Safely dispose of unused, unneeded, or expired
prescription drugs. Be aware
that if you dispose of unused
medicines, they can be mixed
with coffee grounds or kitty
litter to make them less appealing to children.
