The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Board
of Directors has announced its slate of officers for the
2016 year: President, Dennis Pezzimenti, DBP Realty;
Vice-President, Tim O’Keefe, Cutco Cutlery Corporation;
Secretary, Mari Howard, The ReHabilitation Center; and
Treasurer, Ledgie DeRose, Mazza Mechanical Services.
Mr. Pezzimenti stated, “It’s an honor to be elected to the
leadership role with GOACC. The Chamber staff is one of
the most dedicated and hard-working teams I have ever
worked with, and we have a volunteer Board of Directors
that is committed to making our area successful, businessfriendly, and a model for other small communities. We
continue to face substantial challenges to maintain and
grow our community as a vibrant, progressive, and
attractive location for both businesses and families to
thrive. Our 2016-2018 strategic plan identifies the resources, partnerships, and
actions necessary to gain significant achievement in economic development,
quality-of-life concerns, and vitality for our member businesses.”
New to the Board for the 2016 term includes: Matthew Kahm, Shults Auto Group,
Andrew Caya, Caya’s Canopies. Eric Garvin will serve in the ex-officio role for 2016
Sports Show Attendance -- Right on Target!
The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce deemed the seventh annual Greater
Olean Area Outdoor & Rec Sports Show held this weekend a continued success
with more than 2,300 visitors. Sunday’s attendance was 300 more than last year!
Overall attendance was up about 74 from 2015’s show. The show, which featured
51 vendors, was held at the Good Times of Olean Events Center.
“For a first time vendor at this show, J & J Animal Products,
SOUTH (Olean) got our name out to many customers on the
product lines we carry. The many contacts made today will
definitely generate future sales,” stated Judy Perry, Owner.
“Normally, all shows are very slow on Sundays. But this
one was popping all day,” stated Carmen Wilkins, Pacific
Mountain Farms of Hornell, NY.
Next up for the Chamber, the Home Show is set for April 8-10, 2016. For more

AAHA ~ History Lesson 101
The year 2016 started off with a
bang as the 7th Annual Outdoor
& Rec Sports Show was held in
January – with many many visitors!
The Allegany Area Historical Association was started in 1982 as a result
of Allegany’s Sesquicentennial celebration in 1981. The first meeting
of the new group was held on March 25, 1982 in the basement of the
Town Hall.

SHOW is scheduled for April
8-10, 2016 at the William O. Smith
Recreation Center. Show hours will
be Friday, 5 PM-9 PM; Saturday, 10
AM-6 PM; and Sunday, 10 AM -4
PM.
At the same time, the First United Methodist Church at 25 North Second
Street was in the process of merging with Showers United Methodist
Church in Olean. The building was erected in 1855 and was a big part
of Allegany’s early history. Rather than have the Allegany church
building torn down or left to deteriorate, an agreement was reached
whereby the historical association would begin the steps necessary to
acquire the church for use as its headquarters.
Next up is the COMMUNITY-WIDE
GARAGE SALE on Saturday, May
21, from 9 AM until 4 PM. Deadline
to enter is Wednesday, May 18.

on Friday, May 20 and also will be
handed out from GOACC office on
the morning of the sales, beginning
at 7 AM.
AAHA acquired the deed to the church in July 1983, but much work
still had to be done for the deal to be completed. AAHA started to
hold meetings in the church building, and received their provisional
charter as an association in August, 1983. One of the first events was a
Community Christmas Service in December of 1982, and it continues
to be held every year since.
The CORPORATE CHALLENGE
5K and WALK will be held
THURSDAY, June 23 at JCC-Olean,
Downtown Olean. The event was
created by GOACC with the goal of
supporting companies in creating
internal wellness programs.
BACK AGAIN this year will be a
CORPORATE GOLF CLASSIC,
held Monday, July18, at the Bartlett
Country Club in Olean. What
company foursome will reign
supreme in this 3rd CORPORATE
Golf Classic! The Chamber will
invite corporates and community
to partake in this golf competition
that is sure to be a classic.

year of events!

AAHA began to hold five meetings a year with speakers on topics of
local and regional historical interest. This was later reduced to four
meetings a year, and they are always open to the public. Meanwhile, the
lengthy process of title searches, surveys, and everything else related
to changing a property from a sacred to a secular use was nearing
completion. The association finally was granted full ownership of the
church building on March 21, 1985.
The newly renamed Allegany Heritage Center was dedicated on
August 4, 1986, and the building was marked with a Historic Allegany
plaque. The association was granted its absolute charter by New York
State on December 1, 1986. The Heritage Center is now the permanent
home of the AAHA and houses a number of collections.
AAHA has many genealogies of Allegany families available for
research use, collections of clothing such as military uniforms, wedding
dresses and children’s clothes, information about past and present
Allegany businesses, yearbooks from Allegany Central School as well
as Allegany-Limestone School, Civil War information about Allegany
residents, and many other collections. A recently restored 1856 map of
Cattaraugus County is now a highlight of the collection.
AAHA has over 200 members around the country, and publishes a
newsletter four times a year to keep the membership up to date on
meeting information, and also what has and is happening in Allegany.
They are open on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 pm from May 1 to September
30 for persons looking for local information. They are also open by
appointment.

Brand Elected President of CRCF
Wendy Brand of Allegany was elected president of the board of directors of the
Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation at the board’s recent annual meeting.
Ms. Brand, who previously served as board vice president, is the community constituent
liaison for Assemblyman Joseph M. Giglio, Assembly District 148. She also serves as
a commissioner of Allegany State Park Regional Commission and is a former board
member of the YMCA of the Twin Tiers.

She fills the position previously held by outgoing president Carol Stitt of Olean, who
completed the maximum limit of three three-year terms on the board. Mrs. Stitt also
was the Community Foundation executive director for nine years. She will serve on
the board’s executive committee as immediate past president for a one-year term.

Two officers were re-elected:

Michael D. Kasperski, CPA, of Olean was re-elected board treasurer. He is
a professor of accounting and internship coordinator for the School of Business and
NCAA faculty athletic representative at St. Bonaventure University.

Doug Price of Olean was re-elected board secretary. For more than 40 years
Mr. Price has been associated with Hunter Insurance Agency in Olean, with 27 years as
president and owner. He has been an active Olean Rotary Club member for 38 years,
as well as a member of other community organizations.

•UPDATE ON RAISE THE WOOF!
Dear Chamber Members, The SPCA
in Cattaraugus County is pleased to
provide a “Raise the
Woof Update”. We are
so pleased to announce
that
generous
donations, from the
community, including
individuals, businesses
and
organizations
have helped us raise
part of what we need
to replace our failing roof. Efforts thus
far have raised almost ¾ towards the full
roof replacement, make improvements to
existing heating equipment and start on
the insulation project.
However we are only about halfway to
our needed $250,000 goal and we still
need to raise $110,000. Reaching this
goal will mean full completion of the roof
itself, the required improved and needed
full heating, ventilation project and
the replacement of the dropped ceiling,
lighting fixtures and duct work. All are
required due to the damaged roof, and the
new heating system.
WE NEED YOUR HELP to make this
full project a reality for the health, safety
and well-being of the community’s
neediest animals. We urge you to take

•SANTA’S VISION DELIVERS
ONCE AGAIN -- For 15 years,
Visions Hotels LLC has orchestrated
Santa’s Vision, a series of free
holiday season events that deliver
toys and positive family experiences
to the communities they serve. At
the Hampton Inn in Olean, the
Santa’s Vision event on November
28 welcomed some 2,000 guests and
collected approximately 500 pounds
of food. Great job Hampton Inn!
•TAKE FLIGHT! -- As Mercy Flight
has grown since 1981, so have their
helicopters. They have become larger
and more sophisticated. For this
reason, their Olean base, the Louis
A. Magnano Hangar, has undergone
some upgrades. The hangar door
has been widened, the helipad has
been repaved, and the building has
been painted. More than $100,000
was invested into this project to
adequately house their helicopter
and crew 24/7 365.
•VITA at UNITED WAY -- The
United Way of Cattaraugus County
is going into their 13th year of doing
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
at their offices. The income thresh
hold for that is under $53,000.

CHAMBER NUMBER of the month! - Six Hundred
Ten - Each year, the Chamber sells an ornament depicting a
building that is an area landmark. Red & Trudy’s, this year’s
ornament, hit the record breaking high number of 610 ornaments created and
sold! The average number of ornaments sold each year is about 150. The second
high seller is St. Bonaventure’s ornament at about 400.

Home Show Promotions Back
The Home Show committee has scheduled a theme day for each day of the show.
Friday, April 8 – Friday Night Wine Walk
Saturday, April 9 – Handyman Contest Day
Sunday, April 10 – Every 30 Minutes: Gift Card Raffles Day
How can you as a home show vendor participate?
For the Friday Night Wine Walk, we are looking for six (inside) vendors who will allow
the winery/craft beer place to hand out their drinks to participants of the walk. Yes, people
will be coming to your booth to get the samples, but will increase traffic to your booth. We
are asking for an additional $50 for the vendors who would like to participate.
For the Handyman Contest Day – We are hoping to find out just who is the Olean Area’s
best handyman or woman. There are plenty of those who say they are the best, but now
it will be official with the Handyman contest. Register today and we’ll pick three finalists
from the entries to compete. Each contestant has three fix it challenges. The one who
completes in the quickest time with satisfaction from the judges wins. No participation
from vendors needed unless you would like to register someone!
For the Every 30 Minutes: Raffles Day – The home show committee would like to give
away gift cards for the show participants – YOU! To be included in this, you would check
the box below and turn in the gift card. We would like the gift cards to be at least $50 in
value. You will receive an additional 15 comp tickets for submitting a gift certificate.

CRCF Elects Four New Directors
Four new directors were elected recently to the board of the Cattaraugus Region Community
Foundation.
Three people – Lucy Benson of Allegany, Dan Strauch of Allegany and Jeff Reisner of Little
Genesee – were elected as new board members for a three-year term, and one person Tim
O’Keefe of Cuba was elected as a designated director.
Mrs. Benson is office manager for Potter Lumber Co., LLC. Mr. Strauch is chief executive
officer at Olean Medical Group. Mr. Reisner is an attorney and a life, business, and legacy
planner with the Reisner Law Group with more than 10 years in practice.
Mr. O’Keefe was elected as a new designated board member representing the Greater Olean
Area Chamber of Commerce for a one-year term. He is human resources manager at Cutco
Corporation, where he has been employed for more than 22 years, and is vice president of
GOACC. He is also a graduate of and former board member of Leadership Cattaraugus
and former member of the United Way allocations team.
Two board members – Vicki Blessing of Portville and Dennis Casey of Allegany – were
re-elected to another three-year term to run 2016-2018. Ms. Blessing is vice president of
leasing and development for Park Centre Development, Inc. Mr. Casey is co-owner of
Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home
Dennis Pezzimenti, GOACC president and owner of DBP Realty, was re-elected for a second
term as a designated director representing the GOACC.
Established in 1994, the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation is growing good
by connecting donors to the causes they care about most in the region. Grants from the
foundation support many areas, including education, scholarships, health care, the arts,

2016 Community Foundation scholarship app process now open -- The 2016
application process for scholarships managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation is
now open for area high school students at cattfoundation.org/scholarships/. Applicants fill out one
common form to be considered for awards offered from more than 40 scholarship funds.
Students also will submit required documents such as transcripts and reference letters through
the online portal. Last year the Foundation board of directors awarded more than $120,000 in
scholarship aid from funds it manages to more than 60 students. Submissions are due April 1.

Public Speaking Techniques
Workshop

everyone who speaks in public could use.
In general, public speaking scares the life out of
most people. Speaking to a large audience
presents unique challenges and opportunities.
The presenter is John Stevens with the
School of Business / Management Department
at St. Bonaventure University and President at
JB Stevens Organizational Solutions.
The seminars are FREE for members, with a $10
charge for non-GOACC members.
