Michel Joins Olean Business Development Corp.
Christopher Michel has joined Olean Business Development Corp. (OBDC) as its
director of marketing and communications. He’ll also act in the same capacity
for the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We’re delighted to have Christopher join our team,” said Larry Sorokes, OBDC’s
president and CEO of the chamber. “Both the OBDC and the Greater Olean
Area Chamber of Commerce are going to face some interesting challenges in the
coming months as we continue to serve the Olean area and help grow the local
economy. Having a communications expert of Christopher’s caliber is certainly
an asset.” OBDC and the chamber will soon relocate from their current offices at
120 N. Union St. to the former Olean Business Institute. There, OBDC intends to
establish the Olean Business Incubator, offering entrepreneurs support and space
to develop new businesses.
“Both the OBDC and chamber are excited for the new opportunities on the
horizon,” Sorokes said. “Christopher has a unique perspective of this area, having
spent the last several years covering the city of Olean’s government and local
economic development.”
Michel, a native of the Buffalo area, is a graduate of St. Bonaventure University.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication in 2008
and his master’s degree in integrated marketing communications in 2010.
Until recently, Michel worked at the Olean Times Herald, serving as a reporter
and, later, city editor. During his tenure at the paper, Michel received multiple
writing awards from the Associated Press and the New York State News Publishers
Association. Michel resides in Olean with his wife and daughter.
GOACC is a member driven business organization that provides benefits,

Cereal Challenge
GOACC is challenging all businesses and organizations to enter the Cereal
Challenge this June. We have teamed up with the Olean Food Pantry again
and placed this food challenge out to the companies in the Southern Tier. Just
imagine the impact of dozens of companies joining together in unison across
our community, collecting food to put on struggling families tables.
So how does your company join in? Please email [email protected] to let
us know that you are joining the challenge. Then collect cereal—all kinds of
cereals—what was your favorite? Throw in a bunch of favorite, healthy, and
colorful cereals. We will let you know the deadline of collecting and where to
turn in your boxes.
GOACC will present two awards, the Most Boxes Donated and the Most Boxes
Per Employee Donated. However, the winners are all the children who will
enjoy the cereal. The timing of this challenge couldn’t be more perfect – the
Olean Food Pantry needs cereal for summer with the children out of school!

When it comes to avoiding downtime, Databranch, Inc. is among the best of
the best. The IT consulting/outsourcing provider and Datto partner has been
operating out of Western New York for more than 30 years, delivering managed
services, networking and security. David Prince, President of Databranch, is a
big fan of the Datto business continuity solution. “We’ve been doing this for a
long time, so we have a good idea of what does and doesn’t work. Tape backup
has proven to be unreliable and can add days to the recovery process. For
years, I was on a quest to find something better, and Datto has been that and
more ever since we’ve partnered with them,” said Prince.
At the end of the day, it always comes back to the reliability of your business
continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) solution, according to Prince.
Businesses can’t spend time second-guessing or worrying about their solution.
“Datto has brought peace of mind to my team and our clients because we no
longer worry whether or not we will be able to help them recover quickly. We
have saved our clients countless hours, and sometimes days, of downtime by
implementing the Datto solution,” he said.

Step #2
Step #1
Two Ornaments this Year
Every year, the Santa Claus Lane committee chooses the landmarks to be designed
on the 3 1/2 inch circular resin ornament. Through the ornament sales, holiday
lights are funded and can be lit in Olean from November to early January. The artist
sketches the layout (STEP #1) from photos provided by Chamber officials and then
they send a color/actual rendition of the ornament (STEP #2). Then, a prototype is
created. Once the prototype is approved, work begins with the process of pouring
and hand-painting each piece. The ornaments arrive in Olean, individually boxed
and numbered, with a brief description of the ornament.
This year, the committee has chosen two ornaments -- a North Union Street rendition
and the Olean Class Cars. Olean Class Cars contributed to this second ornament
for 2016. It is a commemorative ornament in honor of the late Jim Burgeson.
Fourteen of the sixteen previously made ornaments are still available with a limited
inventory. The first to be unveiled, the Olean Municipal Building in 1999 is sold out
and not available. In 2000, the Fannie E. Bartlett House was depicted, followed in
2001 with St. Mary of the Angels Church. Olean High School came next in 2002 (and
is sold out at GOACC but is sold by the OHS Alumni Association), St. Stephen’s
Church in 2003 (sold out), St. Bonaventure University in 2004, and in 2005, a depiction
of Santa Claus Lane. In 2006, the Olean General Hospital was created, in 2007, the
ornament was the Olean Post Office, 2008 was Community Bank, NA with 2009
Ivers J. Norton. The next ornaments are 2010 Castle Restaurant, 2011 St. Francis
Hospital, 2012 Chuck Wagon Restaurant, 2013 Palace Theater, 2014 Boardmanville
Elementary and 2015 Red’s and Trudy’s Restaurant.
Cyber Security Best Practices for Your Employees
Employees are on the front lines of information security. The more that can be done to regularly educate yourself
of the small things you can do can go a long way towards protecting your organization. Here are some tips to help
you throughout the year to stay safe online while protecting your company in the process.
General Best Practices
•Avoid providing personal information when answering an email, unsolicited phone call, text message or instant
message.
•Never enter personal information in a pop-up web page or anywhere else that you did not initiate.
•Keep security software and all other software programs updated.
Cyber Security Best Practices
•Phishers will try to trick employees into installing malware, or gain intelligence for attacks by claiming to be from
IT. Be sure to contact your IT department if you or your coworkers receive suspicious calls.
•Report security warnings from your Internet security software to IT immediately, chances are, they aren’t aware
of all threats that occur.
•Be cautious of links and attachments in emails from senders you don’t recognize. Phishers prey on employees
who open these without checking them out, opening the door to malware.
Online Behavior
•When backing up to cloud services, be sure to talk to your IT department first, for a list of acceptable cloud
solutions. Organizations can make this part of their AEU policy and make it a fire-able offense.
Best Practices for When to Contact Support
•Call IT before you get in over your head. Often what starts as a simple update can be made more complex by
attempting to “fix” the problem.
•When you Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), ask your IT department if your device is allowed to access corporate
data before you upload anything to it. Use authorized applications to access sensitive documents.
