Dear Fellow Broadcaster : Welcome to the newest edition of the Graduate Bulletin from Vincennes University’s Broadcasting Department. It introduces our graduates from May, August, and December of 2007. This Bulletin is also available online. You can access it in three easy steps: • Visit the VU website at vinu.edu • At the VU homepage word search “Broadcasting” • Select Grad Bulletin Here at Vincennes University, we are always looking to the future to improve our program. Beginning this academic year all of our students will be required to complete ENG, Newsroom Operations, and Broadcast Sales II, eliminating the separate production and sales options. This will give all of our graduates a more well-rounded education. This change has been met with enthusiasm from our Advisory Committee. Members of the Vincennes University Broadcasting Advisory Committee are: KEVIN CONNERS DAVE CROOKS PATRECE DAYTON HILTON DIAZ JOHNNY GEORGE MASON HOLLIS NANCY KIRKPATRICK GENE KUNTZ CLARENCE MANN BRIAN MATTINGLY STEVE OGLESBY JOE STOLL BRUCE VILLINES DANNY WAYNE WISH-TV, Indianapolis WAMW, Washington & WFML/WVUB, Vincennes WTHI-TV 10, Terre Haute Charter Communications, Vincennes Johnny George Voiceovers,, Indianapolis Duncan Video, Indianapolis Keller-Crescent Co., Evansville WITZ-AM/FM, Jasper WFIE-TV, Evansville Mattingly Communications, Indianapolis Oglesby Digital Post Inc., Evansville WISH-TV, Indianapolis WFIE-TV, Evansville Midwest Communications, Terre Haute We appreciate the input given by our Advisory Committee. We strive to give students a hands-on education from the very first week of classes. In the opening week of labs, our students learn the operation of studio cameras and audio boards. VU Broadcasting is far from “theory” oriented. We keep our equipment as state-of-the-art as possible. Our faculty and staff have worked in the broadcasting industry and can relate to the needs of prospective employers. Practically every station in Indiana has employed VU Broadcasting graduates because they are ready to go to work. Those students who decide to continue their education at a four-year school report that they are ahead of the other students in the major because of the classes and labs required here at VU. I appreciate your time in looking over this booklet. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (812) 888-5417. Academic Training AAS Degree -- Broadcasting Available for Employment May of 2007 Page 20 TV Production Through the combination of staff and students, WVUT-TV 22 produces more hours of local production than most public television stations. This could not be accomplished without staff and students working together to accomplish daily tasks and goals. Students are crew members for the nightly newscast, sports remotes, public affairs programs, and other productions throughout the year. Eight AVID editing suites, coupled with linear two and three machine editing, are utilized for production. “The major advantage VU Broadcasting grads have over other programs is handson experience.” Page 21 WVUT-TV/WVUT-DT WVUT-TV is the University’s PBS affiliate serving Southwestern Indiana and Southeastern Illinois through the combined efforts of staff and students. Students are involved daily in all operations of the station. A daily 30 minute newscast is produced by students and staff. “Newscenter 22,” is broadcast live at 5:00 pm and re-broadcast at 11:00 pm. “Newscenter 22” has been presented with a Spectrum Award for Best TV Newscast in the Non-commercial TV category, by the Indiana Broadcasters Association. Students anchor the news, sports, and weather; shoot and edit stories; switch and direct; and operate all equipment necessary for the production. WVUT-DT was the first public digital television station to go on-air in Indiana, broadcasting a high definition and standard definition schedule daily. Page 22 WVUT also produces “22 Magazine,” a public affairs magazine program. Students produce, edit and shoot program features and may help co-host the program. They also produce public television promotional materials and commercials for outside clients. WVUTTV/WVUT-DT Page 23 Radio Production In addition to four on-air radio stations, there are eight audio production studios that contain a variety of professional audio production equipment. In the VU tradition of “hands-on” training, students learn to operate every piece of audio equipment in every studio. Students are required to use these studios for various projects. From our digital audio consoles to our “Adobe Audition” 64 track digital editors, students learn and practice on the latest audio equipment. The Broadcasting Department faculty and staff works directly with students in both formal and arranged lab situations. Page 24 WVUB--Blazer 91.1 91.1 WVUB, is a Hot Adult Contemporary/Contemporary Hit Radio 50,000 watt Public Radio Station, now available in High Definition WVUB is affiliated with Public Radio International and the Associated Press. These affiliations provide our listeners with the most up to date information and enable WVUB to provide quality programming to a wide base of listeners. WVUB is staffed by students who perform most of the on-air duties and production for the station. Students work with the AudioVault Express automation system when on-air, providing them with the training they otherwise would only receive at commercial stations. Students on WVUB are supervised and trained by Broadcasting faculty and staff who have backgrounds in the commercial industry. On-air performance, improving communication skills and keeping the audience entertained and informed are just some of the goals students work toward when on-air. WFML-FM WFML-FM, “The Fox,” is a commercial station staffed and operated by professionals who may work with student volunteers in various areas. Page 25 WROL-FM & WROK-FM WROL-FM (87.9) and WROK-FM (88.5) are low-power stations that are formatted much like regular commercial radio stations. Both stations are also streamed on the internet at www.vinu.edu. WROK-FM is a classic and current rock music station, while WROL-FM plays the latest contemporary pop, rock, and urban music. First year students have required shifts on these stations to develop their on-air presentation skills. Advanced radio students are staff members for these stations and develop skills in many practical areas of station operations. Page 26 Remotes A variety of radio and television remotes are produced with students each year, ranging from men’s and women’s college basketball, political debates, election returns and Meet Your Legislators, to the Miss Vincennes University Scholarship Program (winner of the Indiana Public Broadcasting “Best Performance Award”) and the VU Commencement ceremony. Page 27 Multimedia Students can catch the wave of the future and enter the BroadcastingMultimedia Option. Multimedia is the creative union of graphics, animation, audio, video, and text to produce an informative, eye-catching visual multimedia display that may end up on the Internet or on an Interactive-CD. This option provides students with the basic skills and techniques to move into this fast growing, challenging, and rewarding field. Students in the Multimedia program gain a working knowledge of equipment and procedures in a project based environment. In the computer lab, students utilize AVID editing systems and other programs, to develop skills in multimedia authoring and animation. Page 28 Broadcast Sales Option Some of the 2007 calendar year graduates chose to complete the Sales Option in the Broadcasting program. Those students develop a more specific background in broadcast sales. Radio, television, and cable selling techniques are presented and practiced. The successful Vincennes University Broadcast Sales student has a working knowledge of Arbitron and Nielsen rating techniques and uses, local, regional, and national selling differences in addition to direct and agency selling skills. Based upon the strength of our sales instruction, students who successfully complete the Sales Option will be eligible to take the Radio Marketing Professional test and become certified by the Radio Advertising Bureau. This places our graduates at a higher level when interviewing for a job. Vincennes University is the only college in the country “partnering” with the RAB in this manner, and shows our commitment to properly preparing our students.
