Sacha Daehler 3 Our Committee Look Beyond The Cycle of Grades On Thursday 28th of May, the committee and management had their last meeting of the school year 2014/15. Main topic was the quality report which deals with the targets set in the performance agreement for the year 2014/15 and their achi ev em ents . Th e amend ed performance agreement for the new school year was discussed and voted upon. Over all and to date, SSiS is performing on a high standard and committee and management are determined to continue to exceed. However, to me, maintaining what we have is not enough. We also have to look into the long-term future and start to adapt the school system to the world of technology, networking and globalization. Today’s schools are dominated by approaches to learning that are fundamentally individualistic and competitive in nature. So is the Swiss School. Our school currently follows the curriculum of the Canton of Zug and our children are taught in Mathematics, History, geography, German, English, French and etc. Students are tested in the respective subjects so that the teachers, parents and students themselves are able to see their progress. A report card including the individual student’s grades and teacher’s assessment is sent home twice a year to the parents. This is a school system that most of us are familiar with. However, we now need to re-evaluate the system and integrate the changes required to adapt to today’s fast paced world. Schools need to focus on learning and acquiring the skills which are needed to collaborate with others. Being able to work in a team, managing relationships and understanding cultural sensitivities will increasingly become an essential component for all kinds of businesses and ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 therefore its importance should be like the Swiss School. How can we best higlighted in our future generations’ prepare our students to face the education. challenges ahead? A report called “New Vision for Education” done by the World Economic Forum talks about the 16 most critical skills essential for the 21st century. Six of them are the foundational literacies, we all are familiar with: literacy, numeracy, scientific literacy, ICT literacy, financial literacy and cultural and civic literacy. These skills teach students how to apply core skills to everyday tasks. The four skills - critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration are summarized under the name competencies, which teach students how to approach complex challenges. Lastly, under the character qualities, six skills are named; curiosity, initiative, persistence/grit, adaptability, leadership social and cultural awareness. These character skills will enable students to approach their changing environment. According to an article “Unlock latent talent for the 21st century” written by Klaus Schwab in The Straits Time (16th May 2015) human resource executives expect “profound disruptions from the increased adoption of mobile, Internet and cloud technology, the use of big data, flexible work arrangements, 3D printing, advanced materials and new energy supply according to early results from a survey by the World Economic Forum”. However, WEF values these disruptions as an overall positive impact on employment levels as long as the needed workforce skills can be developed fast. Thus, education has to be rethought and adjusted as well as it has to overcome the incentives to focus on short term. Instead, one has to begin to plan for a future in which one has to embrace the constant changes. We are invited to look into the future and its challenges that lies ahead for a school Finland, already known for its top scoring students worldwide, is going down the line of reforming its school system to be better catering for the needs of the 21st century. The ‘teaching by subjects’ will be replaced by the ‘teaching by topics’. Schools in Finland focus more on group work and solving problems in teams instead of having a teacher in front of the class , which will equip the students with skills for teamwork, leadership and communication. A first step into the direction of teaching by topics and of emphasizing on core competences will be done with the implementation of the Lehrplan 21, which in some Cantons will be implemented with the coming school years in others later. The Canton of Zug just announced that it would most likely start to use Lehrplan 21 from 2019/20 onwards. However, as the Swiss School is set in an international environment, the committee and management might as well look beyond Lehrplan 21 by assessing various modern school systems and by looking beyond the cycle of grades. I wish you a wonderful summer holiday! Rebekka Aicher Koch 4 Our School Celebrating 40 years of Service This year, we had great pleasure in celebrating with Ms Betty who has reached a significant milestone of 40 years in her service to the Swiss School. We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation for her commitment, dedication and contribution to the success of SSiS. How does it feel like to have reached this milestone of being a part of Swiss School for so long? Never in my wildest dream I had imagined that I would have stayed for such a long time when I first stepped into the Swiss School 40 years ago. I am glad to say that most days here have been amazing. Being able to love and enjoy my work with these adorable children all these years has kept me going with the same passion I had 40 years ago. The management and teaching staff that I have had the chance to befriend and work with have also been incredible since Day One. I am so proud of this school, and looking back, I have absolutely no regrets that I invested 40 years of my life to the children and the Swiss School. What are the significant changes/progress you have seen over the years? The number of staff in the Swiss School has grown tremendously. In the past, the teachers had to perform administrative duties in addition to our usual teaching responsibilities, and I am glad that we now have a most efficient administrative team to handle the 'operational' matters. Having so many more colleagues has also given me the chance to make many new friendships, and these friends that I have made through the years are something that I hold dearly. The school building itself has also gone through tremendous changes and we now have a functional building that caters to the needs of the students. What motivates you as a teacher daily? What motivates me is the knowledge that I have a chance to be a part of each child’s progress and improvement in all areas of their development. Being able to see the happiness in the kids’ faces and being greeted each morning with lots of hugs and kisses as well as hearing them say, “I love you” is so special to me, and I don’t think this is something you can get in any other job. What is the most memorable experience you had working as a teacher? Over the years, I have had many of my ex-pupils visiting Singapore dropping by at the Swiss School. To see how successful they have become always gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing that I have played even a tiny part in their early years. Some of these ex-pupils have even told me how they wished they could have enrolled their children in my class. To hear something like that was definitely one of the more memorable experiences for me. What do you like most about being a part of the Swiss School family? I get to enjoy every day that I am here as the colleagues are like family members showering me with lots of care, love and are always ready to offer a helping hand or listening ear whenever I need it. In your opinion, what are the most valuable qualities of a teacher and what advice will you give to your colleagues or future colleagues who will join SSiS? You must have passion, dedication and a genuine love for the students. It is all about them. One has to really love and enjoy working with the little ones to be able to have a fulfilling and successful teaching career. Please complete the following sentences: Swiss are… friendly, caring, kind and cheerful people. Simply amazing. My favorite Swiss meal is…Cheese Raclette. My favorite place at SSiS is… my classroom. ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 5 Our School Thank You and Farewell! I would like to take this opportunity to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all the teachers who are leaving SSiS at the end of this academic school year. To ensure a conducive learning atmosphere, the school relies on the dedication and the commitment of every teacher. Dealing with the children everyday requires a lot of energy and patience and I am thankful to everyone for their invaluable contribution. Thank you all for being part of our community! ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 11 Our School Project Week - Underwater World P roject Week started off with a big splash with the theme Underwater World! Students from KG-P2 embark on a spectacular underwater journey. They were split into different groups to take part in various crafts, activities, reading and games. Students were seen making gorgeous 'under the sea' inspired paintings; plush, hand-sewn fish, colourful dolphins and many other sceneries. They were also engrossed in various fun activities such as scavenger hunts, water races, bobbing ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 Text & Photos : James Nolan for apples and many more. It was easy to see that the students were fully engaged and loving their time with the many fun activities that their teachers had organized for them. On Wednesday, the KG-P2 students went on an excursion to West Coast Park where the kids had a fantastic time exploring, playing and enjoying a day away from SSiS. A special thank you and appreciation goes out to the following teachers - Ms. Blattman, Ms. Budry, Ms. Schuler, Ms. Ackermann, Ms. Steger, Ms. Ahr, Mrs. Rashne and Ms. Abey for all of the organizing, as well as all of the staff involved who made this week a huge success. The Underwater World Project Week was a tidal wave of fun, adventure, making new friends, and full of great memories that the students will not soon forget!! 12 Our School EC Celebrates Mother’s Day I t was a wonderful sunny morning when the mothers and children arrived at West Coast Park. The children welcomed their mothers and started off by singing a lovely song that they had prepared for. Their singing was so beautiful that all mothers called for an encore and so they performed their song again for four times. It was a wonderful start to the day. After the performance, the children took their self-made Mother Day’s presents from their teachers and ran to their mothers to present their beautiful presents. Their eyes were sparkling with joy when their mothers opened the ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 Text : Constanze von Eicken | Photos: Christian Heusser special gifts. Soon after, it was time to begin the game activities and all the mothers were divided into different teams. There was lots of fun, joy, hugging and dancing all over the meadow. The mums were competed enthusiastically soo that they could win for their teams. Though the sun shone mercilessly, the participants showed their burning ambition equally in all the games. After the competition was over, all the teams had a short rest in the shadows of the trees. After a restful break, everyone was soon engaged in a Charades game where the mothers acted out different nursery rhymes and their groups had to guess. The last game was a Scavenger Hung where the teams had to collect many different to earn as much points they could. After the score was revealed, there was a lovely surprise waiting for everyone – an ice cream truck! The winning team and everyone else got the opportunity to enjoy an ice cream . The mothers and children enjoyed the rest of their special day with face painting, photographing, sticking water tattoos on their arms and beading necklaces/bracelets. It was a indeed a beautiful and memorable day celebrating in the honour of the most important person in our lives – our mothers! ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 15 Our School P5 School Camp to Loola Resort A m Montag, 4. The kids made their own Police badges which they proudly wore and had fun in role playing as Police Officers. We invited the Police Officers from the Bukit Timah Neighbourhood Police Centre to give a talk, showcase their equipment and also to share their experiences with us. Both Kindergarten A & B as well as the Little Tots joined in too. On the day of the visit, the police car arrived at the front foyer of the school during recess time. The Friendship exchange programme is a wonderful learning experience for the children from both schools. Children are children, no matter where they come from. The cultural differences were an exciting adventure for them and the Korean children were introduced to an environment different from their own setting. We started off with ‘morning circle’ followed by the Swiss school song, a walkabout the grounds of the school and engaging in activities such as ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 Text: Rashne Athayde | Photos: Bianca/Noemi storytelling, board games and outdoor play which were organized by the Kindergarten teachers for this annual exchange programme between the two schools. The children greeted one another in Korean and German, spoke about their countries, and the differences in food, clothing and climate. They started off bit shy but eventually warmed up to one another. The warm and friendly atmosphere helped the little ones to let their guard down and enjoy themselves for a morning packed with play, learning and fun. bands on each wrist, sporting the colours of the Swiss Flag and a slab of toblerone in their hands, the children waved goodbye! 20 Our School P6 Religious Excursion Text: James Nolan | Photos: Remo Kneubuehler O n Wednesday, May 6, the P6 and Exchange Students from Oberägeri, Zug, went on an adventure to different places of worship and exploring the 3 major cultural and religious groups in Singapore. After departing in some heavy rain, the weather cleared up and the students spent time in Chinatown. First, they visited the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, for a guided tour and explanation about the life of Buddha and the Buddhist philosophy. It was an insighful and meaningful learning experience We then moved on to the Sri Mariamman Hindu Temple which was interesting and ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 extremely fascinating. There were different idols and the devotees placed offerings in the form of milk, flowers, bananas, candles, string and spices. There was one particular idol that stood out which was the Shivalingam (snake god) a round stone or pillar. The students spent some time wandering amongst the shops and kiosks in Chinatown. The exchange students also managed to get some souveniers to bring back home for their loved ones. shelves filled with old, worn out but some new prayer books and numerous different Koran. There was a carving inside the wall with gold and bronze swirls, an Ahzab. It shows the direction of the Qibla in Arabic, which also means the Kaabah. We then headed to the Tekka Hawker Centre where the students were curious to sample the different variety of food available. The students were extremely respectful, inquisitive, Afterwards we moved to our next destination which was the the AbdulGhafoor Mosque in Little India. We had to take our shoes off before entering the mosque. Merci, Danke, Thank You, Gracias, Xièxiè, Terimah kasih, Dhan'yavāda, Welcome Wolfgang Oesch M y name is Wolfgang Oesch. I am thirty years old and I recently got married to Melanie Brunner. I am looking forward to succeeding Mrs Rahel Probst’s position at UWCSEA as the teacher of German and French for the Swiss curriculum starting from August 2015. I was born and raised in the small village of Abtwil, St. Gallen, in the east of Switzerland. After finishing High School, I started studying education at the University of Teacher Education in St. Gallen (PHSG) where I learnt how to teach German, French, English, History and Geography. I taught German as a second language to youngsters as ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 a German assistant in Aberdeen, Scotland, for one year. I enjoyed the i n t e r n a t i o n a l atmosphere a lot and the desire to work in an international school setting has been on my mind ever since. When I returned to Switzerland, I started teaching at the High School in Dietlikon, Zurich, as a classroom teacher. Since then, I have been teaching, coaching, supporting and accompanying two sets of classes. I am looking forward to implementing experience and expertise I gained at the UWCSEA. I enjoy snowboarding in winter and go hiking or biking in summer. I love travelling, swimming, playing tennis and catching up with my friends. I am a very curious person naturally and I enjoy reading and learning new languages. I also like to go dancing with my wife and going to the cinema. I am looking forward to working with the UWCSEA and to meeting you in person. 24 Our Parents Flea Market and Car Wash T he morning sunshine on Saturday, 16th May, allowed us to set up a colourful marketplace, including a carwash, in and around the SSiS MPH. The children were excited as they prepared their wares for sale and they quickly learnt how to bargain and barter in the hectic, vibrant atmosphere. The book sale was a huge success with everyone grabbing a bargain on some interesting reads. A big thank you goes to Marcela Cochrane and class P4B who did an amazing job and raised $417.50 for the chosen charity - Child’s Dream. The students from the Upper Primary, as well as some of the teachers, were also raising ISSUE 4 | JUNE 2015 Text: Nadine Breitenmoser│Photos: Camilla Businger money for Child’s Dream by conducting the annual car wash. Some cars, as well as some students and teachers, got a very good clean and were soon all sparkly and shiny. The car wash raised an additional $335 for Child’s Dream which was fantastic and greatly appreciated. Family and friends had a great time catching up at the “coffee stuebli,” with yummy cakes, biscuits, brownies and coffee. If you were looking for something savoury, or you were still hungry after the snacks, the delicious BBQ, run by President Rebekka Aicher Koch, Swiss School Principal Sacha Dähler and Vice Principal Christian Heusser, was available. A huge thank you for all their help in making this a success. Of course, this BBQ could not have happened without the generosity of Huber’s Butchery and Ariyzta Food Solutions. We are very grateful to Ernst Huber and Melanie Phua. Their contributions made a huge difference and we are all very appreciative. The event-committee remembers our sponsors, all the parents that brought in home-baked goodies as well as everyone who worked hard to make this event happen. All together, we will be donating to $1,487.50 to Child’s Dream. What an achievement!
