But the Heath couple was disappointed that the recognition didn’t last. “For years (Bill) wanted to do something for Jerrie because no one really knew about her,” she said. “People here in town didn’t know about (what she did).” ADVERTISEMENT Kelley reached out to Reid in 2011 and together they started a fundraising campaign. They raised $45,000 to build a statue of Mock, Mary said. “(Bill is) very, very proud,” she said. “He gets tears in his eyes when he thinks about it because he feels it’s really a great accomplishment.” Every contribution, no matter how small, was appreciated, Reid said. “I just think it’s wonderful that people wanted to come together. This way you can take your children and grandchildren to The Works and say, ‘We helped pay for that.’” The statue Kelley contacted Columbus sculptor Renate Fackler to create the lifesize statue of Mock. She agreed to the project immediately. “(Jerrie) did something especially innovative for her time,” Fackler said. “It was a honor to be chosen.” Reid posed for the statue wearing the blue suit, heels and pearls that Mock wore during her flight. www.newarkadvocate.com/article/20130911/LIFESTYLE/309110045/Newark-native-s-solo-flight-around-world-honored-statue-Saturday 2/6 9/12/13 Newark native's solo flight around the world to be honored with statue Saturday | The Newark Advocate | newarkadvocate.com Fackler first made a clay version of the statue than made a series of rubber and plaster molds and wax pieces. The pieces were ultimately cast in bronze and welded together, then coated with a golden brown color. The statue, which was installed at The Works this morning, shows Mock holding the book she wrote about her flight, “Three-Eight Charlie.” The Columbus Foundation is raising money to erect a second statue at the Port Columbus airport in time for the 50th anniversary of Mock’s return, Fackler said. A place at The Works Mock’s statue will have a permanent home in The Work’s LeFevre Courtyard. “I think the real goal is to inspire another generation of kids. They need to learn to reach for the stars,” said Marcia Downes, managing director at The Works. “Here is a woman who was told that women couldn’t fly and she did.” To celebrate the statue dedication, The Works will have some of Mock’s memorabilia, including the outfit she wore during her flight, on display this fall. The museum also has a whole year of programming focused on aviation scheduled for this year, she said. Downes said her main goal is educating Newark residents that Mock is a hometown hero. “We want people and our kids to grow up knowing that Jerrie Mock was the first woman to fly around the world, not Amelia Earhart,” she said. “How cool is it that she is from Newark?” Jerrie's thoughts When Jerrie Mock first heard that a campaign was underway to build a statue of her, she admitted to being confused. “All I did was go have fun,” she said. “I went out to see the world, something I wanted to do when I was a little girl.” Mock, 87, lives in Quincy, Fla. She still remembers telling her parents she was going to travel to the places she read about in her geography book. She wanted to see camels and elephants and people from other cultures. Although she isn’t able to travel to Newark for the unveiling, Mock said she is excited to see photos of the finished statue. “I hope I can inspire people to do new things, don’t just do the same things every day,” she said. “Get everything out of life that they can.” If You Go What: Jerrie Mock Statue Dedication When: 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday www.newarkadvocate.com/article/20130911/LIFESTYLE/309110045/Newark-native-s-solo-flight-around-world-honored-statue-Saturday 3/6 9/12/13 Newark native's solo flight around the world to be honored with statue Saturday | The Newark Advocate | newarkadvocate.com Where: The Works, 55 S. 1st St., Newark Cost: Free and open to the public More info: Those interested in flying in to the Newark-Heath Airport for the event can catch a shuttle to The Works.
