To Our Dedicated Supporters,
Thank you for joining us this evening for the 35th Annual Ambassadors
Ball to benefit the National Capital Chapter of the National Multiple
Sclerosis Society. As co-chairs, we are honored to continue the tradition
of this event in support of such an important cause. We would also
like to welcome the newly arrived ambassadors, and their families, to
Washington, D.C.
Tonight, Washington’s business, legislative, and philanthropic leaders will
join us in honoring the Washington Diplomatic Corps for their invaluable
generosity and contributions to our community. The support of such a
diverse group tonight is a reflection of the realities of this disease – MS
knows no state or national boundaries. This disease will continue to affect
hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. and 2.5 million worldwide
until we find a cure.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to
fund research for a cure, and to address many of the challenges faced by
all those affected by MS. We are proud to join the National MS Society
to express our gratitude for all your contributions to further this mission.
Welcome to the 35th Annual Ambassadors Ball – we wish you a wonderful
evening!
Sincerely,
Terese Casey and Mylene Walden

Senator Richard Burr
First elected to the U.S. House of
Representatives in 1994, Senator Richard
Burr served five terms in the House and
is currently serving North Carolina in
his second term in the U.S. Senate. He is
a vocal advocate for our men and women
in the military and their families, and for
the growing population of veterans across
North Carolina. In the Senate, he serves
as Ranking Member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee
where he works to improve the quality of health care and services
that our nation’s veterans receive.
Senator Burr is a member of the Congressional MS Caucus. He is
a strong champion of medical research and the National Institutes
of Health, including a commitment to promoting a robust medical
research pipeline in the U.S. He is a Member of the Senate Health,
Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, the Senate
Finance Committee, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and
Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he is the Ranking
Minority Member.
The son of a minister, Richard and his family moved to WinstonSalem, North Carolina when he was a young child. After graduating
from Wake Forest University, he began his career far from the halls
of Congress by spending seventeen years in business with Carswell
Distributing, a wholesale commercial products company. Richard
and his wife, Brooke, have two sons.
2013 Honorees
Representative Chris Van Hollen
Congressman Chris Van Hollen was
elected to Congress in 2002 and is the
Ranking Minority Member on the House
Committee on Budget. As co-chair of the
MS Caucus, he led the ‘Dear Colleague’
letter initiative that supported increased
funding for the Congressionally Directed
Medical Research Program and strong
funding for the National Institutes of
Health in the past four fiscal years, as well as funding of the Lifespan
Respite program from fiscal years 2011 to 2013. He was a lead sponsor
of the MS and Parkinson’s Disease Registries Act in the House and
strongly supports many of the National MS Society’s Principles for
Health Care Reform including the enactment of comprehensive health
reform legislation. Congressman Van Hollen also focuses his attention
on job creation, reduction of air and water pollution, investments in
climate change research, and quality education for all children.
Before his election to the U.S. Congress, Congressman Van Hollen
served 12 years in the Maryland General Assembly. Previously, he
served as a Senior Legislative Advisor for Federal Affairs to Maryland
Governor William Donald Schaefer and also as a Professional Staff
Member on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee specializing
in national security and a range of foreign policy issues. Earlier, he
served as the Legislative Assistant for Defense and Foreign Policy to
former Maryland Senator Charles McC. Mathias, Jr.
Congressman Van Hollen received an undergraduate degree from
Swarthmore College, a Masters in Public Policy from the John F.
Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and his J.D.
from the Georgetown University Law Center. Congressman Van
Hollen lives in Kensington, Maryland with his wife, Katherine, and
their three children, Anna, Nicholas, and Alexander.
2013 Honorees
The Honorable
Capricia Penavic Marshall
Ambassador Capricia Penavic Marshall
served as the Chief of Protocol of
the United States from 2009 until
2013. During her tenure, Ambassador
Marshall was the lead representative
of her country in setting the stage for
successful diplomatic engagement with
other nations at the highest levels.
In serving on the front lines of diplomacy, hers was the first
hand extended to welcome presidents, prime ministers, ruling
monarchs, and other foreign dignitaries to the United States.
She oversaw the coordination of five international summits
hosted by President Barack Obama, six State and Official Visits,
and hundreds of other bilateral and multilateral meetings with
President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, as well as Secretaries
of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Kerry.
Ambassador Marshall also served as the principal liaison between
the United States government and foreign Chiefs of Mission
in Washington, D.C. In this capacity, she established a new
office—the Diplomatic Partnerships Division—to promote
cross-cultural exchange and build new international partnerships
with leaders in business, culture, and government throughout
the country.
Ambassador Marshall holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political
Science from Purdue University and a Juris Doctor from Case
Western Reserve University School of Law.

About the National Multiple Sclerosis Society
MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make
sure it doesn’t. We fund more MS research, provide more services to people
with MS, offer more professional education, and further more advocacy
efforts than any other MS organization in the world.
Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved
therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for
many people with multiple sclerosis. Talk to your health care professional
and contact the National MS Society to learn about ways to help manage
multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.
About the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation
The Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) was established
in 1967 as an international body linking the activities of National MS
Societies around the world. The mission of the MSIF is to lead the global
MS movement by stimulating research into the understanding and
treatment of MS and by improving qualify of life of people affected by
MS. In undertaking this mission, the MSIF utilizes unique collaboration
with National MS Societies, health care professionals, people affected by
MS, and the international scientific community
