COMPETITION UPDATE
Competition continues at a brisk pace at CPR with events 3, 4, and 5 each with a
big roster of drivers—76 on May 21, 56 on June 4, and 76 again on June 18. Persistent wet weather made competition difficult and sometimes a little unfair with
some heats dry while others had soaking rain on the same day.
May 21 saw Sam Strano take first place in the popular new Index Class, just
nosing out Ron Dotts who took second. This event also saw Ron Dotts take his
first FTD, ever (excluding the lightning fast shifter carts of course). Speaking of
shifter carts, Ryan Lower again showed father Steve how to get it done. Chris
Barnard continued his winning ways in AS as did Chris Gottschall in his Audi
in FS. Weather changes between heats caused some unusual results in ESP, and
Mike Cunningham again frustrated Steve Eastman in CP.
The June 4 Fathers Day event saw Ron Dotts again taking car FTD with Park
Wiker taking Index. Gary Gurchik took back the lead in ESP and Steve Eastman took it away from Mike Cunningham in CP. No Fathers Day gifts for
Steve Lower or Howard Henning as their sons showed no mercy with wins by
Ryan Lower in F125 and by Daniel Henning in STS.
On June 18 Sam Strano dominated both FTD and Index Class. Mike Cunningham took it back from Steve Eastman in CP. James Pahel took BSP and Gary
Gurchik again took ESP.
After 5 events and half way through the Summer Series, Ron Dotts has the
points lead in Index but it will be a struggle to keep it. Chris Gottschall has a
solid lead in FS as does Gary Gurchik in ESP. It’s likely to be a shootout to the
end between lead Mike Cunningham and second place Steve Eastman in CP.
Ryan Lower has a razor thin lead in F125 and Adam Mohar not willing to give
his sister a break in FJB. Dan Warner is on top in SM while Howard Henning
is going to have to battle son Daniel to stay on top in STS. With the new points
system, the tables could turn dramatically in the second half. So, stay
tuned………..
OUTSIDE COMPETITION
Noteworthy are the various outside events that CPR members have attended.
Ron Dotts, Bryan Smith, Don Wilson, and Keith Hoover competed in York in
May and all 4 took first place with Bryan Smith taking FTD. Park Wiker and
Sam Strano traveled to Devens MA for the National Tour event. Park trophied
and Sam took first place. Park Wiker, Keith Hoover and Bryan Smith did a nonSCCA autocross event in Cumberland MD. Ron Dotts, Dave Mohar, Brian
Smith, Mike Cunningham, and Lee Watson traveled to Beaver Run with varying
results. It was crowded and was very slippery but the Steel Cities club is a great
group of people and Beaver Run Motorsports Complex is a pretty cool place.
I’ll definitely go back.

A FEW COMMENTS ABOUT THE 2006 TIRE RACK SCCA SOLO NATIONALS
THE FOLLOWING ARE EXCERPTS FROM A RECENT MEMORANDUM ISSUED BY ROGER JOHNSON, SOLO NATIONALS EVENT CHAIRPERSON:
As the 2006 Solo Nationals approach, we are reminded that the event will be held at Heartland Park Topeka (HPT) race track.
There has been much speculation about this change and I would like to address some of these. I would point out that two of the
nation’s best Solo course designers, Karen Babb and Kevin Youngers, have been assigned Course Designers for 2006.
Some recent correspondence from Karen observed the following: “I have never seen this good of a blacktop surface anywhere.
Although the overall square footage available at HPT is less than Forbes, the actual square footage of usable surface at Forbes is
much less because of the minefield of grates, poles, peaks, valleys, holes, heaves and snakes. There are no such issues at HPT.
It should be remembered that a very big complaint about Forbes was the deteriorating surface and the move to HPT was largely
driven by this input. Stay tuned and have faith in the people who put this together. Yes, it will be different. No, it won’t be perfect. Yes, it will evolve.”
Holding the Sole Nationals at a purpose built race facility, instead of a location designed for other uses really makes a positive
impression. Everything about this site is about racing. Buildings erected for automotive competition. Real toilets ! A paddock
wide address system. It only seems fitting that the Sole Nationals be held in a purpose built race facility instead of a parking
lot—a place where the Nation’s best will compete for a chance to earn their 2006 Solo National Championships.
Divisional Club News
2006 NORTHEAST DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
This year, the Northeastern Divisional Championship will be held near the small village of Romulus, NY. On July 21 through July 23. The event is being hosted by the Fingerlakes Region. The
event will be held at Seneca Army Depot at an airstrip there. I am very familiar with this very scenic area. It is located approximately 22 miles north of Watkins Glen on the Eastern shore of Lake
Seneca. There is a large state campground located almost adjacent to the event site and on the
shore of the lake. The area has become extremely popular for it’s locally owned wineries and is
very crowded on summer weekends. There is a shortage of nice motel rooms but numerous bed
& breakfast rooms. So I would encourage those attending to make your motel or B & B reservations soon. The event is not yet available for registration.

AS MOST OF YOU ARE AWARE, WE ADOPTED A REVISED SEASON POINTS SYSTEM THAT
BECAME EFFECTIVE AT THE BEGINNING OF 2006. THIS DECISION WAS MADE AT OUR
DECEMBER 2005 MEETING AND, SHORTLY AFTER THAT, TOBY MORDKOFF PREPARED
THIS ARTICLE EXPLAINING IT. MY APOLOGIES FOR NOT POSTING THIS SOONER.
New Points Systems for 2006
At the December General Meeting, the ways in which points are awarded was discussed in detail. In the end, two
changes were approved, although some other issues remain open.
The first change concerns the points earned for Regional Class Championships. Starting last year, points have been
awarded by finishing position, regardless of the number of competitors. This will continue. The change is in the specific
numbers of points. In order to make it more possible for someone who is far behind to catch up in the last few events,
ProSolo-style points will be used in 2006. In particular, first will receive 20 pts, second 16, third 13, fourth 11, fifth 9,
sixth 7, seventh 6, eighth 5, ninth 4, tenth 3, eleventh 2, and everyone else will receive 1. By increasing the gaps between first and second, and between second and third, a class leader who “falls apart” during the last few events could
easily be overtaken.
The second change concerns the manner in which Solo 2 Champion will be determined. The key difficulty here is how
to make comparisons across classes with very different numbers of drivers. On one hand, if points are awarded by finishing position, then there is a distinct advantage for being in a small class (with fewer people to beat). On the other
hand, awarding points in terms of how many other competitors were slower (i.e., the current system of number-ofpeople-beaten plus one) gives a huge advantage to those who run in the larger classes. And, at the risk of insulting myself, this system is also biased in favor of classes like Street Modified, where only a few cars are prepared anywhere near
the limit of the rules.
Because both of the simple options have problems, two other methods were discussed. One new method would be based
on PAX, but this was rejected, mostly because it would too closely match the new PAX-based class. Therefore, a
method based on “trophy positions” was approved. The SCCA awards varying number of trophies, depending on the
number of competitors in the class. For example, when there are three or fewer drivers, there is only one trophy. When
there are four through six drivers there are two trophies, and seven to nine drivers yields three trophies. Trophy position
is calculated by counting the number of other trophy positions that were slower and adding one. So, if there is only one
trophy, that one person is in trophy position 1. If there are two trophies, the winner is in trophy position two and the second-place driver is in trophy position one.
This new method is a bit complicated, but it charts a middle-ground course between the two simpler extremes. It rewards larger classes, but only about a third as much as the current method. It also stresses winning, since the winner of a
class is always in a trophy position.
Of course, for Solo 2 Champion, all events count (not just CPR events) and “bigger” events are worth more points. Continuing this, Divisional- and State-level events have their points doubled, plus anyone attending gets a one-point bonus
(even if they do not win a trophy). National Tour and ProSolos get triple points with a two-point bonus. And Nationals
and the ProSolo Finale get quadruple points with a three-point bonus.
The one open issue that was not discussed concerned how many CPR events will be “dropped” from the scoring for the
Regional Class Championships. In the past, one-third of the events (rounding down) have been dropped. As of now,
this will be repeated, but an explicit vote might be taken at the January Meeting.

Secretary: Copies of April Meeting Minutes distributed. Minutes were approved as read.
Treasurer: Current fund balance is $12,052.17. A short-term certificate of deposit for $5,000, is included in the fund balance. Karl
Bender donated a second laptop computer. A canopy for events was purchased for approximately $200.00. Lauren pointed out that
we are now able to save 50 cents per event entrant.
Solo II:
We are averaging 70 plus cars per event this year. The May 21 event could possibly be a runway event depending on placement of
firefighting equipment. Josh indicated that he has the course designed for the two day event. A member was sanctioned one event
for not working. CPR will need to begin buying general supplies on behalf of the airport because they are so short on funds and are
not buying anything. Paul Stinson, original chairperson of the upcoming two day event, has resigned from that position.
Newsletter: Ron Dotts indicated that the next newsletter will come out in late-May and anticipates using a monthly format thereafter
through October. He continued to solicit articles, photos commentary, etc.
Membership: No report
Merchandising: Schedule cards are now in circulation (approximately 2,000). T-shirts are selling well. Some general merchandise is
selling.
Old Business:
Event Pre-registration: Averaging 15 to 20 entrants using pre-registration – going well.
Sponsorship: Members who go to Quaker Steak & Lube after event with wristband on will get a 10% discount.
Insurance Quotes: No update. Need equipment list and airport lease agreement.
Two-Day Event: It was agreed the name of the event will be “FIRST ANNUAL CPR CONE KILLER CLASSIC”. Will do cookout,
campfires, beer permitted after event shuts down. Camping will be permitted. Lauren suggested making a list of duties and solicit
volunteers. Cost of event will be $30 per day with cap of 120 entrants per day. Pre-registration is required.
New Business:
Witches Rally: Jim Wegielewski and Nate Coraor planned out a route and road out the route. Indicated more details to follow at next
meeting and also indicated it would be a fun course.
Work Days: Dave Mohar expressed a need for work day volunteers on a regular basis because airport is shorthanded.
Car Shows: Car show planned for July 15 at Canoe Creek State Park from 12 to 5 pm. Rob Beck of Altoona is our contact for the
event. Try to let Rob know if you are attending by the night prior to the event. Anticipating about 6 CPR participants.
Policing Highway: Jim Wegielewski discussed potential problem of speeding to and from events. Much discussion followed. Mike
Cunningham moved to go with Josh Duvall’s suggestion that no sanctions be charged to members for speeding outside of Black
Moshannon Park and airport property but if caught speeding within that property we will adopt a “three strikes and you’re out” policy.
Jim Wegielewski seconded and motion passed.
Safety Complaint: Paul Stinson recently sent a letter of complaint to the SCCA National Office wherein he alleged that the Mid-State
Airport course is unsafe for shifter-carts. National Office has responded by indicating they will make a site visit in the near future. In
that regard, Dave and others have been working on fixing areas that could be construed as unsafe. Dave indicated that the pavement
in the transition area to the left tarmac needs improvement which may cost between $2,500 and $5,000. Barry Duvall motioned to
give the executive committee authority to spend the money if the National Office has no other higher critical issues. Steve Lower seconded and motion passed. Steve and Ryan Lower went on to thank CPR for their efforts in assisting shifter-cart competition to be allowed at Mid-State Airport.
Meeting Location: Management at QSL ordered us out of meeting location shortly after 9:00 pm. Meeting resumed in the parking lot.
Many complained this is totally unacceptable and that QSL is no longer workable because meetings must be shortened. It was
agreed that Ron Dotts would talk to Dave Weaver and we would seek a new location.
Adjournment: There being no further business in the parking lot, a motion to adjourn at 9:40 pm was made by Mike Cunningham,
and seconded by Jim Weigelewski. Motion passed.
