‘Heel de wereld is rond Amsterdam gebouwd,’ schreef de
beroemde Nederlandse dichter Joost van den Vondel in de 17e
eeuw. In die Gouden Eeuw barstte het oude stadsgebied binnen
het Singel uit haar voegen en ontwierp men rondom de
middeleeuwse kern de grachtengordel. Zo ontstonden de
Heren-, Keizers- en Prinsengracht, die door dwarsstraatjes
met elkaar werden verbonden. In deze straten voerden
ambacht, handel en cultuur vanouds de boventoon.
400 jaar later bruist het er nog altijd van ambachtelijke
bedrijven, bijzondere horecagelegenheden, galeries en een
uniek aanbod van kleinschalige, gespecialiseerde en veelal
authentieke winkels.
De 9 Straatjes® is de verzamelnaam voor de negen schilderachtige winkelstraatjes tussen Raadhuisstraat en Leidsestraat, op
een paar minuten loopafstand van het Paleis op de Dam. Deze
wijk met haar vele monumentale winkelpanden heeft de gezelligheid van het verleden behouden en gonst van leven. De
straatnamen herinneren nog aan het ambacht van de leerbewerking en het geheel geeft een prachtig overzicht van de
bouwstijlen binnen de Amsterdamse grachtengordel. Dit mooie
stukje stad staat alom bekend als het meest boeiende winkelgebied van Amsterdam!
‘All the world is built around Amsterdam,’ wrote the famous
Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel in the 17th century. During
that golden age the old area of the town within the Singel
bursted out of its seams, so a ring of canals was designed
around the mediaeval town centre. The Heren-, Keizers- and
Prinsengracht did arise and were connected by side-streets. In
those streets crafts, trades and culture traditionally have been
dominant. After 400 years the streets still house a
great number of craft shops, extraordinary cafés and
restaurants, gallery’s and an unique offering of specialised
and authentic shops.
The 9 Streets is a collective name given to the nine cosy
streets between Raadhuisstraat en Leidsestraat, just two
minutes to walk from the Royal Palace at the Dam Square. This
little district with its small monumental shoppinghouses
constitute an appealing neighbourhood with a great
atmosphere. The names of the streets recall the craft of leather
working and as a paradise for pedestrians it offers a magnificent
overview of the building styles within the old centre of
Amsterdam. This beautiful piece of the city is worldwide known
as the most exciting shopping area of Amsterdam!
