The Merchant of Venice is a line that
has its conceptual origins in Venice
and its history: it draws attention to
the everlasting role of the city as a
central force in the perfumery tradition
throughout the world, and it involves
different product lines based on the
ancient Republic of Venice, its refined
craftsmanship, and its centuries old
trade with the Orient.

The Merchant of Venice was inspired by the Perfume Museum, which
in turn now crowns the creation of the fragrance. First of its kind in Italy,
the Museum represents the focus of Mavive’s expertise and efforts,
and its completion is due to the agreement between the historic Venetian
perfume company and the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.
In the rooms of Palazzo Mocenigo a stimulating layout will guide visitors
through multimedia didactic contents, sensory experiences, and rare,
precious objects, and will inform them of the centuries-old continuity
between the Republic of Venice and the history of perfume. Among
the numerous items available there is also a fascinating recipe book:
Secreti nobilissimi dell’arte profumatoria (1672), one of the first treatises
on modern cosmetics and now reprinted in facsimile form by Mavive
especially for this occasion.
The perfume Museum has been enriched with the opening of three new
spaces. These new spaces significantly expand the section of the palace
that is dedicated to the Perfume Museum; they encompass a:
• Perfume Laboratory, hosting courses on the composition of fragrances,
which are addressed to adults and families
• Multimedia laboratory, enabling visitors to explore the world and history
of perfumes and cosmetics;
• White Room, entirely dedicated to temporary exhibitions.

Between the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance,
the commercial system of Venice reached its maximum
splendour and prosperity, and the city became the centre
of trade between Asia and Europe. During this period, the
Venetian merchants imported spices, textiles, silks, gems,
gold, and essential oils that were then distributed throughout
Europe. The maritime trade routes were serviced by convoys
of ships (mude), mainly comprising fleets of Venetian galleys,
which imported and exported valuable goods and connected
the main trade centres of the entire Mediterranean and
Asian regions. The mude are the source of inspiration for the
entire line of The Merchant of Venice; its Murano Collection
includes six different Eau de Parfum, which suitably express
the perfect merging of olfactory refinement and beauty.

The
Perfumer Kit
A distinctive and commanding element of The Merchant of Venice is the
Perfumer Kit: a complete set of instruments and ingredients that affords
the possibility of translating desires into fragrances by utilising two bases
(50 ml each) and six facets (10 ml each); the facets contain different mixtures
of essences, one for each main olfactory family.
By following the manual supplied with the Perfumer Kit, users can create
their own 20 ml Eau de Toilette and bottle them in the special spray purse.
The Perfumer Kit reflects the educational value of the Perfume Museum and it
highlights the connection between the perfume, its creation, and its subsequent
uses. Aspiring perfumers can learn to distinguish the different ingredients,
and develop the capability of “listening to the emotions” that perfumes evoke
along with the memories they arouse.
The Perfumer Kit offers the possibility of creating true “olfactory signatures,”
personalised fragrances that exalt each individual personality through a mixture
of refined essences from ancient times; it encourages one to speculate on,
and dream about, the great perfumes of our times and their core ingredients.
