Cathedral of the Holy Spirit 520 Raymond St., Bismarck, ND 701-223-1033 Sunday Readings and Backgrounds Gospel : John 21:1-19 Jesus stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. • After the resurrection, the disciples returned to their homes in Galilee and to their former occupation of fishing. • Suddenly, the appearance of the Risen Christ transforms all aspects of the disciples’ lives. • In the final chapter of today’s Gospel, Peter’s three denials of Jesus are matched by Jesus’ threefold commission to take care of his flock. 3 sunday of Easter rd Week of April 10, 2016 Reading I : Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41 We are all witnesses to all this. • The trial of the disciples described in Acts was their second trial before the Sanhedrin (the highest court of justice in Jerusalem). • The disciples were arrested for disobeying the order to never speak in Jesus’ name again. • In today’s passage, the order not to speak of Jesus is repeated by the Sanhedrin. Stewardship Thought In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells Peter again and again, “If you love Me, feed my sheep.” He says the same to each of us, “If you love Me, use the gifts I have given you to serve your brothers and sisters.” • Christian stewardship provided a spirituality that you can take home from church, exercise at work, and express through personal involvement in the community and the Church. • Does your wife have a Will? In the event of a common disaster, the courts will look to your wife’s Will in the distribution of your estate. Be prepared; get her will written. Reading II : Revelation 5:11-14 The Lamb that was sacrificed is worthy to be given power, wealth, glory, and blessing. • The vision from Revelation presents the heavenly witness to the Risen Christ. • The hymn of praise begins with the voice of angels, all living creatures, and the elders. • The response comes from every creature in heaven and on earth, everything in the universe. 4 VOCATIONS JAMBOREE was held at the University of Mary March 30-31. One of the booths represented was the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia from Nashville, Tenn., in which Sister Cecilia Anne, OP, pictured above, is visiting with attendees of the Jamboree. She is the sister of Kimberly (Mrs. James) Fries. 5 22 of our youth and 10 adults attended the event on Wednesday, March 31. There were over 50 booths of various vocations and religious communities from around the country, and other ministries such as the Knights of Columbus, Young Disicples Apostolate and Saint Gianna’s Maternity Home. In the evening, we had the honor of hearing Bishop Robert Barron of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. (See his website: wordonfire.com and his many talks on YouTube).
