100 Old Bethlehem Road, Perkasie, Pa 18944 The mission of Peace
100 Old Bethlehem Road, Perkasie, Pa 18944 Website: www.peace-tohickon.org E-mail: [email protected] The mission of Peace is to invite encourage and equip all people to love God with all their heart, mind, soul and strength and to go love our neighbors as God loves us. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We began the season of Pentecost with a bang! Our sanctuary was breathtaking with banners and ribbons. The fire and wind of the Holy Spirit were on display. The themes of the day were clear and evident. It was beautiful. The season that follows Pentecost Sunday goes on for many weeks, stretching all the way to Advent in November. Unlike the festival that kicks it off, the remainder of this season is not flashy. The color of our paraments (the altar cloth and other colorful bits) will stay green for a long, long time. And unlike Advent, Epiphany, Lent, and Easter, the season after Pentecost doesn’t have a single theme, but is called “ordinary time.” But for people of faith there isn’t really any such thing as ordinary time. When asked about God’s presence, Luther once said, “God is in my potato soup!” The infinite is present everywhere and always – permeating even the most ordinary things in space and time, but not limited by them. Detecting God’s presence is our duty and our delight as we grow into the faith that God has given us. As we meet God in the beauty of creation; in our daily confession and prayer; in scripture and the songs of our worship, we are attuned to discover the presence of holiness in everyday experience. Gratitude makes our bowl of cereal into manna. We wash our face in living water that reminds us of our baptism. We glimpse the intentions of Eden in a hummingbird hovering in a hibiscus flower, or the warmth of the sun on our face. Without fanfare God’s work to bless and heal us and his world continues around the edges and just beneath the surface of our everyday life. We grow in discipleship as we hone our sense of holiness, and discover God’s extraordinary presence in daily life. Our Summer worship schedule at 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., which kicks off with an outdoor service on Father’s Day, will give us opportunities to worship a bit earlier so that we have more of the day to enjoy the outdoors. Our yard sale at the beginning of the month, and Vacation Bible School at the end of the month will allow us to bless our neighbors and also put us in a Summer frame of mind. If you spend weekends away during the summer months you can find a local ELCA congregation with the congregational look-up on the ELCA website www.elca.org. In order to support our ministry (which continues through the summer) a number of folks have moved to an automatic payment option for their offerings. I do this myself. It can easily be arranged with your bank or “Simply Giving” can be arranged through the church office with a form and a voided check. Summer is many things, but not ordinary, because of God’s amazing grace! May you feel his extraordinary love everywhere! The Welcome Church is a specialized ministry for people experiencing homelessness. In addition to attending this day, donations of food, bottled water, new socks, small packages of wet wipes, and other items of use to the homeless community will be gladly accepted. We will assemble materials after our 10:15 worship and carpool to the 3pm service at Logan Circle. EDUCATION FUND APPLICATIONS ARE DUE JUNE 1ST These materials may be found on the table in front of the tract rack located in our church entryway or downloaded from our website. Applications for the scholarships st MUST be received by JUNE 1 so that they may be processed by the scholarship committee. They will be presented to the Church Council at their June meeting. ALTAR FLOWERS AND BULLETINS. We are in need of flower and bulletin sponsors on the following dates this summer. June 5, 12, 26 July 17, 31 Aug 14 Flowers $37.00 Bulletins $15.00 Total $52.00 You may sponsor flowers and/or bulletins Please consider sponsoring someone or a special event on one of our Sundays Our council president was out of town for our May meeting, so it was conducted by our vice-president, Beverly Azzalina. In preparation for the report on the scholarship applications council reviewed the criteria in the by-laws and applications, and determined to seek clarity on some points from the education committee for the future. The need for a disaster response team was considered, and council appointed Dwight Dulsky to head up this effort. While preparedness cannot prevent disasters from taking place, having a plan can save time and potentially save lives. More than 50% of community members identify their local church as a place they would seek help in case of a disaster. We should know how best to serve our neighbors. The possibility of getting a heart defibrillator was discussed, and referred to the team for advisement. Potential members were identified and forwarded to Dwight. If you are interested in serving please let us know. Council members were asked to contact all leaders in their area of service (Operations, Community, and Spiritual Formation) to get dates for meetings and activities that are planned for the remainder of 2016 for the master planning calendar in the church office. We hope to have the calendar complete in June. We received an update on the Heefner property. Plans were established for distribution of unwanted items that are stored in the house through a silent auction and the youth yard sale. Sandy Miller also presented a preliminary agreement that arrived the afternoon of our meeting from the lawyers. There may be a congregational meeting scheduled in the not too distant future to consider the offer. A copy of the preliminary document is in the council notebook in the church library. The invitations extended by council to potential members of a fellowship team have not borne much fruit as of yet. Some discussion was held to address the Summer Church Picnic. Community, particularly through Janice Propsner, is taking some steps to determine a date and get the preliminary organization underway. A recommendation from the Worship and Faith Formation team to leave the lectionary and plan a year-long focus on Lutheran faith and teaching was approved. This will start on Reformation Day 2016 and will culminate on th Reformation Day 2017 as part of the celebration marking the 500 Anniversary of the Reformation. PROPERTY COMMITTEE NOTICE Heefner Property Update We are currently finalizing the documents for the sale of the Heefner property. Since there has been very little interest in purchasing the property since we obtained it in 2009, we have had to be a bit creative in arrangements with a buyer. Although the Congregation has already given Council the authority to sell the property, Council feels that an opportunity should be presented to our members to look at the details, to be able to ask any questions, then to cast a formal vote on the sale of the property. We hope to have an agreement for the congregation to review at a special meeting in mid- to late- June. This serves as notice that such a meeting will be forthcoming; information about a specific date will be shared as soon as it is available. -To Wanda Renshaw for arranging our very successful blood drive, and for all who donated blood.
