The LAIR is truly another facet on the gem that is the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. The L.A. Zoo is an important component of the greater Los Angeles region’s quality of life. Citizens need safe places to recreate and decompress from their daily chores. The corporate responsibility of the Zoo to save wildlife and wild places manifests itself in good educational programming, conservation support, and academic research—all of which enhances the Los Angeles community. Employers, educators, and businesses all know this, and you do, too. So, thank you for your support this past year. I look forward to working with you again in the coming year, improving the quality of life for Angelenos and wildlife everywhere. John R. Lewis, Los Angeles Zoo Director JAMIE PHAM G The long-awaited LAIR is a stunning showcase of amphibian, invertebrate, and reptile diversity. Welcome to the 2011–2012 Annual Report edition of Zoo View. Another year of great achievement is behind us, while challenging us to do even more in the years to come. The capstone of 2012 was certainly the opening of the LAIR. This new facility showcasing the diversity, beauty, and adaptations among living amphibians, invertebrates, and reptiles embodies the multifaceted purpose of a modern zoological park. The L.A. Zoo is an economic engine for the greater Los Angeles region, supporting retail businesses, contract services, and tourism. Building the LAIR provided numerous construction and skilled trade jobs while also benefiting the building supply industry. The LAIR is a favorite among zoo visitors, allowing kids of all ages to get close-up views of these amazing creatures. Like the Zoo itself, it is a safe haven for friends and families to enjoy each other’s company in an urban oasis. While viewing the LAIR’s residents, visitors can learn about what makes them special and the challenges they face in their native habitats. LAIR staff converse with visitors about the important work the L.A. Zoo is doing to conserve and understand the F G The LAIR’s grand opening and advertising campaign spurred record attendance in April, the year’s busiest month. 2 Z OO V IEW • MOTOYAMA W I N T ETAD R JAMIE PHAM CHARLIE MOREY G G E Members and donors were treated to special previews of the LAIR, sponsored by Wells Fargo. E GLAZA’s newest attraction was dubbed “one of America’s best carousels” by Travel and Leisure magazine. Dear As John Lewis notes, the opening of the LAIR was the highlight of the 2011-12 fiscal year, and GLAZA members celebrated with the Zoo the success of this achievement. As the Zoo’s first phase of its Master Plan nears completion with the LAIR’s debut, we are also approaching the end of many years of constant construction. Patrons took ready note, for the renovations completed to date attracted the highest zoo attendance in more than 20 years, reaching 1.66 million for the last fiscal year. Reflecting this upward trend, GLAZA’s membership base soared to nearly 73,000 households, and concessions increased dramatically, providing the Zoo with much additional revenue for operations in an era of government retrenchment. Zoo membership remains the highest membership base among Los Angeles cultural institutions—it truly is a campus enjoyed by families from across our entire Los Angeles community. GLAZA opened the Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel in late October 2011, our first design-toconstruction project for the Zoo in recent history. This one-of-a-kind Los Angeles–themed carousel—replete with hand-carved figures of endangered species and the magnificent racehorse Zenyatta, a mural placing Zoo animals at a host of natural California locations, and an A&M Records soundtrack programmed by donors Ann and Jerry Moss—quickly became the darling of merry-go-round aficionados across the country. Indeed, Travel and Leisure promptly named it “one of America’s best carousels,” a distinction we are thrilled to have. Within eight months more than 120,000 individuals had taken a spin, all in support of programming at the Los Angeles Zoo. JAMIE PHAM ZOO FRIENDS Among a host of projects we raised funds in earnest for was a much needed capital improvement to the World of Birds Show. A brand new stucco “house” that facilitates the handling and showing of the Zoo’s bird collection is now underway and will welcome Zoo visitors in the spring of 2013. To be called the Angela Collier World of Birds Theater, it will be a renewed and important component of the Zoo’s education and conservation programming. Endowment provides an essential financial foundation for the Zoo, for it secures the Zoo’s programming into the 21st century and beyond. Docent Laura Tyler understood the importance of providing for a community resource that touches almost everyone in Los Angeles during their lives; she designated a named fund, the Laura Tyler Docent and Volunteer Endowment, to support volunteer programming at the Zoo, with a gift of more than $800,000 that was realized in the spring of 2012. We deeply appreciate her foresight and generosity, knowing it will benefit multiple generations of Zoo visitors. We appreciate all our members and supporters, for with you, the Zoo soars. Thank you so much for joining in the life of your community by supporting the Los Angeles Zoo.
