isney’s The Jungle Book is utterly
beautiful.
Any other words you read from this point
down may or may not be the product of
one person’s tangled opinions, but the
beauty of this movie is surely a scientifically
documentable fact. From the very first
glimpses into the murkiest depths of the
shadowy forest to the interplay of light
glistening on every single orange and black
strand of the fur of a tiger’s back, it shows
great craft throughout. This feeling is only
amplified when it is mentioned in passing
during the end credits that the whole feature
was “filmed in downtown Los Angeles”.
More important, however, is that beauty is
exactly why The Jungle Book works. Once
in a while, a movie is made which really
showcases how far the art of computer
generated imagery has come. This is a
setting that is real enough to touch, believe
and become thoroughly invested in, and
presented on a level of photorealism that
simply could not have been achieved up until
this precise moment in time. To properly
convey the story, a low-resolution Baloo
simply would not do. In this movie, however,
audiences are able to see, feel and experience
what the characters are going through, and
this is central to the success of a movie with
only one "real" human character on screen.
That human is Neel Sethi, debuting as the
man-cub Mowgli. Only ten years old at the
start of filming, Sethi performs admirably,
even so far as adopting a similar gait to his
1967 animated alter ego. The interactions
with others in front of the green screen never
feel forced or threaten to take the viewer out
of the moment. There is no shortage of talent
among the animals either. Idris Elba is the
vicious tiger Shere Khan; Christopher Walken
plays King Louie the ape, Bill Murray is Baloo
the bear, providing moments of comedy and
warmth with a delivery which is really fitting
of an indolent five-hundred-kilo frame.
To be clear, this is not a remake of the 1960s
cartoon version, the one famously to be
the last to receive direct input from Walt
Disney himself. Rather, this is a collage of
the cartoon, the book and even parts of the
Disney back catalogue such as The Lion King
(as it borrows the animal hierarchy, with a
large talking feline at the top of it). Combined
with the realistic setting, at times it can feel
“darker” than expected, but in spite of this,
The Jungle Book never loses sight of the lighter
Disney touches. This is down, in part, to
the choice of director in Jon Favreau (best
known for Elf and Iron Man), who has some
experience in bringing together compelling
human stories within an effects-heavy
production.
This is why the movie is beautiful: it is the
outcome of the sum of talent, imagination,
expert direction and cutting-edge technology,
making an entire jungle come to life in a
room somewhere in Los Angeles.

yang menyebabkan The Jungle Book
berhasil. Sesekali, muncul sebuah film yang
menunjukkan betapa jauhnya perkembangan
teknologi Computer Generated Imagery (CGI).
Film ini menampilkan latar tempat yang
cukup nyata untuk disentuh, dipercaya, dan
secara keseluruhan layak ditonton, serta
disajikan dengan level fotorealisme yang tidak
mungkin tercapai hingga tepat saat ini. Agar
dapat menggambarkan cerita dengan tepat,
Baloo beresolusi rendah tidak akan berhasil.
Dalam film ini, para penonton dapat melihat,
merasakan, dan mengalami apa yang sedang
dialami oleh para tokohnya, dan ini penting
untuk film yang hanya memiliki satu tokoh
manusia ‘sungguhan’ di layar.

I
t’s hard to estimate how long people have
been waiting for Batman and Superman to
duke it out. A conservative estimate would
put the wait at just three years, working
from the date that Man of Steel debuted.
You could also say that it’s been close to
64 years, as that’s how long ago the pair
first met in the comic books. Or maybe we
should go with the main touchstone for
Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, the
seminal 1986 graphic novel by Frank Miller,
The Dark Knight Returns – a brutal, satirical
and bloody tale. Simply put, for some,
the film has been a long time coming.
After a short opening section, the film
picks up 18 months after the events of the
first film. Senator Finch (Holly Hunter)
sets out to call Superman (Henry Cavill) to
task for his seemingly wanton destruction
of Metropolis, whilst a young Lex Luthor
(a decidedly hyper Jesse Eisenberg) seeks
to make use of anger and unrest to get
one of his elaborate schemes underway.
Meanwhile, in Gotham City, Bruce Wayne
(a surprisingly well-cast Ben Affleck) worries
over how many more lives Superman
may find himself responsible for.
battle with Zod. The scale of the destruction
is immense – as is, one imagines, the loss
of life. In one of BvS: DOJ’s earliest scenes
we see it all again, but from Bruce Wayne’s
perspective. The lives that are lost are felt;
the impression that we are all ants when
compared to the demi-gods fighting in the
sky is clear. And it’s a pretty canny way to
begin to shape Bruce’s/Batman’s outlook.
Suddenly, Man of Steel’s greatest weakness
becomes this film’s greatest strength.
One of the smartest things Zack Snyder and
his writers do is to reframe the destruction
at the end of Man of Steel. Some were a
little taken aback at Superman’s seeming
disregard for the life during his chaotic
When it comes to the showdown, the film
keeps us waiting – but it turns out to be
worth it. It’s no easy thing to make Batman
seem like a credible foe for Superman,
but Snyder pulls it off with aplomb.

although it is football-centric, it is not a
"football movie". Relationships are built and
bonds are formed, and we witness tragedy
and regret between Pelé and his loved ones.
His family struggle with the prospect of
Pelé leaving school and work so that he can
dedicate himself to football; his mother in
particular wants to support him, but she
can’t help but feel that it’s all a pipedream.
The film does a very good job of showing
how football is a huge part of Brazil’s
identity. We see panoramic shots of
Rio de Janeiro, integrated with real-life
news broadcasts, and feel involved when
communities huddle around radios
anxiously, listening to the broadcaster’s
commentary of the 1950 World Cup.
There are no spoilers for this film. We know
the young boy from Brazil proves to be
the most iconic player the game has ever
had, and will likely ever see. But there’s joy
to be had from other, more unexpected
avenues; the supporting cast are uniformly
excellent, the plot is engaging and the
cinematography is sumptuous. The film
will capture the imagination of the inner
child of anyone who has ever enjoyed the
game. Side note: be sure to keep your eyes
peeled, there are one or two noteworthy
cameos, and you won’t want to miss them.

ollege comedies are commonly brass,
frivolous affairs. Better-known fare such
as National Lampoon’s Animal House and Van
Wilder paved the way in embracing late-night
parties and half-witted tomfoolery. Though
these types of movies normally appeal to
specific viewers, Richard Linklater’s latest film
cunningly appeals to wider audiences while
still embracing all the usual juvenile antics.
Everybody Wants Some!! is set at the
start of the 1980s as a group of college
baseball players in Texas navigate
their way through the freedoms and
responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood.
This is Linklater’s first film since his
dramatic twelve-year-long project Boyhood
which proved phenomenally popular
with audiences and critics. Considering
this current wave of critical acclaim, it’s
refreshing to see that Linklater still has the
confidence to return to his comedic roots.
Everybody Wants Some!! has been described
as a spiritual sequel to Linklater’s earlier
Dazed & Confused and this is certainly evident
from the movie’s thematic tendencies. It
has the familiar coming-of-age tone which
is so recognizable from Linklater’s work,
yet welcomes recurrent boyish slapstick.
The movie uses the character of Jake (Blake
Jenner) as our invitation to the new, beguiling
word of campus mischief. Jenner gives a
solid performance as the naive yet curious
freshman, but it’s the ensemble effort from
the cast of young, rowdy men that really
stands out, and will likely make this movie
an enduring classic. The comradeship is
infectious and feels wholly authentic. The
sense of fun is so seductive that the film
occasionally forgets to delve deeper into its
themes, but the playful merriment happily
compensates for this lack of depth.
Of course, being set in the '80s permits
Linklater go into nostalgia overload. The
soundtrack is especially striking, and was
apparently selected from an initial longlist
of several hundred. In between the pop
there are brief moments of clarity and
intrigue that elevate this film and shows
how there’s more going on under the hood
than you initially believe. That there’s also
a slight but very charming romance, that
has more than a few echoes of Linklater’s
superb Before Trilogy, helps no end.

describes her as "the most beautiful twig"
he’s ever met in his whole life. Ultimately,
it’s love at first sight for both of them. Fisha
is so sure about her feelings for Fikri that
she agrees to marry him. Also on the scene
is Hamzah (Morgan Oey), a close friend of
Fisha’s, who she’s known since she was very
young, and he’s consistently shown her care
and affection, but Fisha has always seen him
as a brother.
Because Fikri has to work out of town, a lot
of the time Fisha finds herself home alone.
She wants to be a good wife, and tries to gain
favour and approval from Fikri’s mother,
Halimah, but it isn’t easy. Along the way,
Fisha twice suffers a miscarriage. Although
Fikri bears this surprisingly well, it makes
Fisha very sad and upset. She comes to believe
that she hasn’t fulfilled her duty of being a
good wife. The situation gets worse when she
is diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer.
Knowing that she won’t have much time
left, Fisha decides to make some tremendous
mesures to prove that her love for Fikri will
go on forever.
The movie opens with an introduction to
Fisha, a girl with a cheerful and candid spirit.
It very much sets up Fisha’s character, and
is well played by Dewi Sandra. Morgan Oey
does solid work as the ever-reliable Hamzah,
whilst Fikri is (of course) played as being rich,
pious and rather cool. As the story builds to
its conclusion, the tumult of sadness and pain
may overwhelm you, but is well worth it.
Hamzah (Morgan Oey), sahabat dekat Fisha

kepedulian dan rasa sayangnya, namun
Fisha selalu menganggapnya seperti saudara
kandungnya sendiri.

Fikri langsung jatuh hati padanya dan
menggambarkannya sebagai ‘ranting
tercantik’ yang pernah ia temui seumur
hidupnya. Ternyata, itu adalah cinta pada
pandangan pertama bagi keduanya. Fisha
begitu yakin akan perasaannya pada Fikri,
sehingga ia setuju untuk menikah dengannya.

Badminton was recently added as a
Paralympic sport, and will be included from
2020 onwards. Because of this, there was a
lot of interest in the Para-Badminton World
Championships in 2015. The choice of venue,
Stoke Mandeville, was very appropriate, as it’s
the birthplace of the Paralympics – making it
a very iconic Paralympic venue.
The first Para-Badminton World
Championship was eleven years ago and
barely had ten countries in the competition.
Since then the event has gone from strength
to strength and now sees competitors coming
from all over the world, making it a truly
global competition.
Lastly on the programme, an interview Edi
Subaktiar and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja.
They discuss what it was like to win in Macau
in 2014, and how it gave their confidence a
real boost, and they reminisce about how
they first got into the sport. Both found great
success as juniors, but with different partners.
They were then added to the national team
and, not long after, they paired up and
became the impressive duo that we now
know them as. At just 22 years of age, the pair
have plenty of time to make their mark on the
world stage.

Sejak saat itu, acara ini semakin sukses dan
kini mampu menghadirkan para peserta dari
seluruh dunia, sehingga menjadi kompetisi
yang benar-benar global.
Bagian terakhir dari program adalah
wawancara dengan Edi Subaktiar dan Gloria
Emanuelle Widjaja. Mereka membicarakan
bagaimana rasanya menang di Makau pada
tahun 2014, dan bagaimana kemenangan
itu meningkatkan rasa percaya diri mereka.

these highly capable men have friends and
family in their daily lives that they feel
they should be protecting. Seeking their
understanding and support is rarely easy. A
hail of bullets overhead would cause them
little consternation, but matters of the heart
can sometimes leave them in tears. These
intense emotions – of sadness, happiness,
courage and loyalty – remind us that these
characters are flesh and blood, just like us.
The show is well written, particularly
the action scenes, which are often nerveshredding; the subtle visual effects
enhance the impact of these sequences.
It’s no surprise that the series has already
established itself as being compelling and
unique, and has been well received.

W
hen a musician chooses a stage name,
there are many and varied reasons
behind that decision, yet it becomes an
intrinsic part of that performer's identity,
evoking an image in one’s mind even before
seeing or hearing the artist – especially when
one thinks of artists such as Sting or 50cent.
So when I first heard of Birdy, an impression
already began to form in my mind of the style
of music I would hear; earthy indie-folk was
what I was expecting, and in reality I was not
too far from the truth. What discovered was
a complex selection of songs from a 19-yearold British artist. At such a young age it is
testament to her talent that Beautiful Lies is
her third album, living up to the plaudits she
received at the age of 14 when she won an
open mic competition and released her debut

single Skinny Love, a cover version of the Bon
Iver song, to huge international acclaim.
Five years later, and with an impressive back
catalogue behind her, Birdy’s new release
takes her in a different direction and has
been described as her ‘coming-of-age’ album.
This is far more adult-orientated and pairs
her with a number of producers who have
worked with artists such as Florence and the
Machine and Adele. This is most apparent in
the big numbers that feature on the album,
such as Wild Horses, where she embraces
a bigger sound than in previous outings.
However, self-penned tracks like Lost it All
and Silhouette are still truly beautiful, piano
led singles, where she shows her amazing
ability to deliver breath-taking haunting
melodies and vocal harmonies. The album
has received considerable critical praise
and has been her bestselling album to date,
no doubt because it pushes her into these
previously unexplored territories.
Whilst it is probably a blessing that her
parents nicknamed her Birdy at a young age,
even if she had used her real name, Jasmine
Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde,
we would still be mightily impressed –
though it may not have evoked quite the
same initial impression.

Inflight entertainment navigation control for Economy Class is on the arm
rest of each Economy Class seat.

TOUCH SCREEN CONTROL

The inflight entertainment homepage will appear when the crew
activates the entertainment system. Use the Mode key on your handset
to activate this screen.
Once activated, the system provides easy on-screen access by simply
touching the different category buttons. Just follow the entertainment
screen of your choice to reveal a wealth of exciting in-flight
entertainment options.
