T
he year-end holidays present good reason for
giving gifts… whether it is to celebrate the end
of a school year, the kindness of a teacher, the
ritual of Christmas, to welcome in a new year or just
to express thanks and gratitude to loved ones.
In fact, gift giving has long been a favorite subject
for studies on human behavior, with psychologists,
anthropologists,
economists
and
marketers
all
weighing in. They have found that giving gifts
is a surprisingly complex and important part of
human interaction, helping to define relationships
and strengthen bonds with family and friends.
Psychologists say it is often the giver, rather than the
recipient, who reaps the biggest psychological gains
from a gift. Hence, gift-giving is an act of altruism —
unselfish concern for the well-being of others. When
we give without expecting anything in return, we are
improving our psychological health.

The social value of giving has
been recognized throughout
human history. For thousands
of years, some native cultures

extreme
that

giving.
Although
cultural interpretations vary,
often the status of a given
family in a clan or village was
dictated not by who had the
most possessions, but instead
by who gave away the most.
The more lavish the gifts, the
more prestige gained by the
host family.
Men have been found to be more price-conscious
and practical when it comes to the gifts they
give and get, while women tend to be more
concerned about giving and receiving gifts with
emotional significance.
Gift giving is often the most obvious way a
partner can show interest and strengthen a
bond. Words may not be able to convey the
intent or the thoughts adequately, but gifts can.
Of course, it is not gifts they are exchanging but
the trust and care for the other person that is
being exchanged and expressed respectively.
But the biggest effect of gift giving may be on
ourselves. According to research, giving to others
reinforces our feelings for them and makes us
feel effective and caring. As Mother Teresa said:
“It's not how much we give but how much love
we put into giving.” – By Kay Tull

by the casual visitor to the city.
One of these gems is the Serge Lutens Perfume House
situated in the Jardin du Palais Royal in a quiet
enclosure which also houses private apartments,
bureaucratic offices including the French Ministry of
Culture and Tourism, and high-end boutiques. The
perfume house itself is very discreet and elegant, no
neon or lavish signs to show that you have arrived
at its doorstep. Once inside, the waft of perfume will
lure you from its small, ornate mirrored foyer to the
opulent and majestic settings of its blue-violet lighted
salon.

Rises from the Ruins
The only structure left standing in the wake of the tsunami
10 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE NOVEMBER 2014
O
n December 26 this year, Aceh will
commemorate the 10th anniversary
of the utter destruction caused by a
wall of water that swept almost everything in
its wake, hurled ships several kilometres inland,
took 225,000 lives and caused untold damage
to property and livelihoods.
Ten years on, Aceh has transformed itself: now
business in the city is brisk, tourist arrivals are
increasing, housing and infrastructure continue
to be reconstructed, the economy is progressing
and a peace deal has been reached between
separatists and the Indonesian government.
The Acehnese are a proud people and they have
always been fiercely independent. They thrive
on their reputation as being the most stubborn
people in Indonesia, wearing it like a badge
of honor. Their history is full of warriors, both
men and women, who fought hard battles with
invading Dutch colonial armies. Even their Navy
Admirals had outstanding women of courage
who commanded entire fleets to defeat the
Dutch forces. Perhaps it is that very stubbornness
and resilience that have helped the Acehnese
recover so quickly from the devastation caused
by the tsunami.

12 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE NOVEMBER 2014
There is a silver lining behind the tragedy
though: an end to the long-running conflict
between Acehnese separatists and the
Indonesian military. The tsunami served as
a catalyst for a peace deal between the
two sides. Although the greater political
autonomy has not quite translated into
real economic progress for many here,
especially those in the rural areas, life is
decidedly better. Aceh is rich in natural
resources and there are more opportunities
for local residents to make money.
Also, there is some semblance of peace
in the province now. Before the tsunami
during the Indonesian occupation, the
army strictly enforced a 6 p.m. curfew but
now it is common for residents to still be
out and about late at night without fear of
any repercussion.

approach your parked car. Don't wait
until you reach the car to search for them
in your purse. Experts say you're most
vulnerable when you are getting into or
out of your car.
Check the back seat before getting into
the car, even if you left it with the doors
locked.
Lock all doors and roll up the windows
while you drive.
Sound the horn in potentially dangerous
situations.
Avoid short cuts that take you through
unfamiliar or unsafe areas.
If you notice someone suspicious near your
car, walk in a different direction toward a
public place and seek help.
If your car is rammed from behind and the
hit seems to be deliberate, stay in the car
with the doors locked. Wait for the police
to arrive.
Most police experts do not recommend
that you carry weapons in your car.
Instead, they suggest that everyday items
like flashlights, fingernail files, pens, keys
and screwdrivers be used for protection.
Never follow a stranger who offers to help
you find your way on an unfamiliar road
or street. Wait in your vehicle and ask for
directions.
SMART TIPS
SAFE
Driving
Position
1
Sit slightly reclined with your shoulders comfortably
back in the seat. Sit as far back from the steering wheel
as possible while still remaining in safe control of the
vehicle.
2
Hold the outside rim of the steering wheel at "9 and 3
o'clock" or slightly lower. This position will minimize
the risk of injury to your arms, hands and fingers in
case your airbag deploys. Your arms should be bent
slightly.
3
Be able to pivot your right foot from the accelerator to
the brake pedal without lifting your heel from the floor.
4
5
Not checking your "blind spots" can have disastrous
effects when merging onto the highway or changing
lanes. In fact, thousands of accidents occur each year
because people who are changing lanes fail to see a
vehicle that is right next to them before making such
maneuvers! One of the ways you can protect yourself
is to make sure your vehicle's side and rearview mirrors
are positioned for maximum road view.
For the driver's side mirror: Place the side of your head
against the window, then adjust the mirror until the side
of your vehicle comes into view. For the passenger's
side mirror: While sitting in the driver's seat, lean to the
left so that your head is in the car's centerline. Adjust
the mirror until the side of your vehicle comes into view.
