Ethan Horton Selected as
Shrine Bowl Banquet Speaker
Connie Altman, Game Chairman of the 78th Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas,
announced that North Carolina’s Ethan Horton has accepted the invitation to
be the special guest speaker for the Shrine Bowl Coaches and Players Awards
Banquet on Friday evening, December 19, 2014 at 6PM, in the Marriott Renaissance Park Hotel and Conference Center in downtown Spartanburg,
South Carolina.
“Ronnie Blount, Chairman of the Shrine Bowl Board of Governors, said,
“We are most delighted to have one of North Carolina’s favorite sons, Ethan
Horton, to speak to our coaches, players, parents and fans of the Shrine Bowl
of the Carolinas. As one of America's premier high school, college and NFL
players, his personal commitment to discipline and the importance he places on the standards of excellence on and off the field is extraordinary".
Ethan Shane Horton from Kannapolis, North Carolina, is a former professional football tight end in
the National Football League. He played one season for the Kansas City Chiefs (1985), and seven seasons as a tight end for the Los Angeles Raiders (1987, 1989–1993), and the Washington Redskins
(1994).
After graduation from A. L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, Horton played college football at the
University of North Carolina, where he was an all-ACC running back and 1984 ACC Player of the
Year. In 1981, he was named the co-MVP of the Gator Bowl. He played in the 1980 Shrine Bowl as a
quarterback from A. L. Brown.
Horton was selected by the Chiefs with the 15th pick of the 1985 NFL draft. (continued on page 2)

He caught 28 passes in his rookie season, but was cut by the Chiefs at the end of the year. Horton
signed on with the Raiders in 1987. In 1988. he then returned to North Carolina as an athletic councilor, but was called back to the Raiders in 1989 by owner Al Davis, who had him converted to the tight
end position. Although he saw limited playing time in 1989, this ultimately paid off as he caught 33
passes in 1990, and scored a 41-yard touchdown reception in the team's divisional playoff win in the
postseason.
Horton had his best season in 1991, catching 53 passes for 650 yards and five touchdowns, which
earned him his only career selection to the pro bowl. He added 77 more receptions with his next two
years on the Raiders, and finished his NFL career with the Redskins in 1994. Horton finished his career with 212 receptions for 2,360 yards and 17 touchdowns, along with 241 yards and 3 touchdowns
rushing the ball.
Ethan Horton is the Marketing Director of The Best of Knowledge a locally owned Company in North
Carolina that's been in business for 12 years. In addition to starting a career in business, Time Warner
Cable has made Horton part of it's High School Football Coverage and WBTV uses Horton's
knowledge on it's Sunday Night (call in) Sports TV Show The Point After ! He is a certified Gender
Violence Prevention trainer for High School and College Students. A Football Instructor for Football
University and the NFL for their Prep 100 Leadership Series. In 2014, The ACC recognized him as a
football Legend and in 2014 he was inducted into the Cabarrus County Hall of Fame
The Players/Coaches Awards Banquet will be at the Marriott Renaissance Park Hotel in Spartanburg,
SC on Friday, December 19th. Tickets are available through the Shrine Bowl office.
Seven Members of Family Participate in the Shrine Bowl
Ms. Stacey Baynham, North Carolina Adult Trainer, is very proud of the fact
that she is the 7th member of her family to participate in the Shrine Bowl. Her
father Larry Baynham was a member of the 1957 roster. Her uncles Earl
Baynham (1948), Ned Baynham (1960), Cousins Craig Baynham (1961),
Mike Walton (1973), and Grant Baynham (1991) also competed for the
Sandlappers.
A native of North Augusta, SC, Stacey is currently in her second year as CoHead Athletic Trainer at River Bluff High School. Prior to River Bluff she
severed at the Head Athletic trainer at Conway High School for 16 years. In
addition to her duties as Athletic Trainer, Ms. Baynham served as a National
Board Certified Physical Education teacher and Varsity Competitive Cheerleading coach. While in Conway she earned the School Teacher of the Year honor as well as the State's
Cheer Coach of the Year. She is allows very active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a
1995 graduate of the University of South Carolina and earned her Master's degree in 1997 at the University of Kentucky. While at USC and UK she served as an Athletic Trainer for numerous collegiate
sports and athletes.

2014 South Bowl Queen
Connie Altman, General Game Chairman, announced that Addison Davis from Ransom,
North Carolina was selected as the 2014 Shrine
Bowl Queen. Addison was born January 20th
2006. She was the 4th daughter to Scott and
Roxie Davis. Spina Bifida was undetected
throughout the pregnancy, which resulted in immediate transportation to Duke University Medical Center. Addison was in NICU for 3 weeks
at Duke after undergoing her first of many surgeries to have her Myelo Repair to close the
hole in her back. As more test and studies were
done it was determined that Addison also had
Hydrocephalus.

hamstring and tendons in her feet to relax the
tightened contractions that were developing. By
the time Addison was 2 years old the battle within her kidneys began. In January 2009 Addison had
her 4th surgery. Her tethered cord had attached to the scar tissue around her spine which made her
movement painful and uncomfortable In June 2010 Addison had her hamstring and tendon released
again.
Today Addison is 8 years old. She is starting 2nd
grade at Acme Delco Elementary School. She loves
the color Pink, riding her bike, swimming and playing with her niece, Ophelia. If you spoke to Addison
over the telephone you would never imagine her life
has been filled with so many challenges. Although
Addison is wheelchair bound, she participates in
community activities, T-ball & dance. Addison loves
to go to church, everything about life excites Addison. Her love for people and truth shines in all she
says and does. In Addison’s world, there are no limits.

SHRINE BOWL OF THE CAROLINAS GAME BALL RUN
COLUMBIA, SC – On November 8th, the Shrine Bowl committee named the high school participants
of the 2014 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas Game Ball Run at the South Carolina State Championship
for track and cross country that was held at Sandhill Research & Education Center, 900 Clemson Rd.,
Columbia SC 29229. The high school seniors were chosen based on their performance at the meet
and will be running the official game ball for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.
The Shrine Bowl Game Ball Run was started in 1986 in collaboration with the Shrine Bowl of the
Carolinas with the help of the South Carolina Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association. The
high school senior cross-country stars will run with the official game ball from the Greenville Shriners
Hospital to Gibbs Stadium at Wofford College in Spartanburg on December 20, 2014.
The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas was first played in 1937, and is the longest running high school all
star game in the country. Shriners Hospital for Children has received more than fifty-one million dollars from Shrine Bowl Games across the United States. More than four hundred and seventy-five
thousand children have been rehabilated at the Shriners Hospitals. The Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas is
played to benefit the Greenville Shriners Hospital for Children and 21 other Shriners Hospitals across
the nation. Last year’s game receipts, along with public and Shrine Center contributions raised much
needed funds for the Hospitals. Since the first Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in 1937, these athletes
have help to raise over $75 million for Shriners Hospitals.

Officials for Shrine Bowl
Danny Martin and Paul Pool Shrine Bowl Officials Co-Chairmen, announded the selection of
Game Officials for the 2014 Shrine Bowl:
Umpire: Charles Welker
Charles “Chuck” Welker has officiated for 27 seasons in the South Carolina Football Officials Association. He has officiated more than 325 varsity games during
his career, including two state championships and three state semi-final games.
Chuck officiated the 2014 Touchstone Energy All-Star Football game in Myrtle
Beach, S.C. He is a member of District 11 Football Officials Association where
he has served on the Board of Directors for six years and mentor for new officials. Chuck is extremely happy and humbled to represent the SCFOA in the 2014 Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas football
game.
Back Judge: D. Lynn Bostic
Lynn has been a member of the South Carolina Football Officials Association
since 1997. A member of District 5, Lynn has served as Back Judge Position Chief
in 2013, 2010 and 2006 and is a mentor to new officials. He has officiated five
state finals and numerous semi-final games. Lynn was an official in the Touchstone Energy All-Star Football in 2007. Lynn was the Bee Harper Rookie of the
Year in District 5 in 1997.
Linesman: David McKee
A member of District 13, David has been an official since 2000. David has officiated in five state championships and numerous semi-final games. In 2010, David
was a member of the crew that worked the North-South All-Star game in Myrtle
Beach, S.C.

Shrine Bowl Silent Auction
The Shrine Bowl is looking for donations for the upcoming Shrine Bowl Silent Auction fundraiser to
be held during game week, ending Friday December 19th, the night prior to the kickoff Shrine Bowl
Game. Last year, thanks to our contributors, the auction raised $5,604.00. As an IRS-approved (501)
(c)(3) non-profit organization, if you provide an item for the auction, a letter will be mailed to you a
documentation of your contribution. Any item is welcome including gift baskets, sports memorabilia,
trips, vacations and Christmas items.

Coach Ron Massey—2001 Assistant Coach—passed away in October. Coach Massey was at A. L.
Brown High school when he was a shrine Bowl Assistant Coach. Most recently he was the head football coach at Piedmont High School.
Damon “Mo” Collins (1993 NC Team) died in October; he had been receiving dialysis treatment after suffering kidney failure. Collins was hired as the head coach of the West Charlotte Lions football
team of West Charlotte High School, his alma mater, in February 2014. Collins was born in Charlotte,
North Carolina in 1976. He attended West Charlotte High School in Charlotte,[ and he played high
school football for the West Charlotte Lions. Collins was a key member of the Lions' North Carolina
4A state championship team iand played in the Shrine Bowl n 1993. The Charlotte Observer ranked
him as one of the top five high school football players in the state of North Carolina in 1993.
Collins accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida,
where he played for coach Steve Spurrier's Florida Gators football team from 1995 to 1997. As a true
freshman in 1994. Collins was a member of the 1995 Gators team that went 12–0 in the regular season and played the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the Bowl Alliance national title in the Fiesta Bowl, and
the 1996 Gators team that defeated the Florida State Seminoles 52–20 to win the Bowl Alliance national championship in the Sugar Bowl. After his junior year in 1997, Collins decided to forgo his final year of NCAA eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.
Collins graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport sciences in 1998.
The Oakland Raiders selected Collins in the first round (twenty-third pick overall) of the 1998 NFL
Draft, and he played for the Raiders from 1998 to 2003. In his six NFL seasons, Collins appeared in
seventy-one regular season games and started in sixty-four of them.

Dennis is a 40 year veteran of
officiating high school football
in South Carolina. He has
worked over 600 games, including seven state championships and numerous semi-final
games. Dennis was an official
in the 2002 North-South AllStar game. Dennis was instrumental in starting the annual Gateway Review
Study Session held at Gateway Baptist Church in
Irmo, SC a week prior to the annual SCFOA
Clinic. It was started in 1987 and was held for 23
consecutive seasons. Dennis also is a rules instructor for District 5.
