Design Brief
From the TAS Dept
Year 7
Last year the year 7 textiles classes explored their hand
sewing skills with their ‘little bear’ projects. The little bear
project is a side project that 7TAS4 completed as a side
project alongside their machine sewn bag project. Students
were given a simple circle pattern that they could then adapt
and make into a cuddly creation of their choosing. Students
were encouraged to decorate their bear using hand embroidery
and the results included adorable bears, cuddly puppies and
even harry potter!

Year 8
Last year’s year 8 class took the sleepwear project to a whole new
level. Students were set the task of creating a pair of wearable sleep
shorts. Students chose a suitable fabric then designed and created a
pair of shorts that could be worn to bed. Student then went on to
apply pockets and decorative trimmings to make these shorts
individual.
The 20 students completing their Bronze level Duke of
Ed will complete their first practice hike Thurs 25th and
Friday 26th. Feb. This group has been working hard at
finishing their community service, skill and physical
recreation which has been completed outside of school
hours. These students have been committed to training
for the expedition and completing the necessary preparation. Watch this space ....

Last year towards the end of term we took some time out to
photograph the year 11 theatre costume project work. The theatre
costume project is a chance for students to design and make a
costume suitable for a specific character from one of their favourite
stories, plays or films. The entire class rose to the challenge and all
of the costumes were outstanding! We had all sorts of characters
from the little mermaid and the hungry caterpillar to ballerinas and
Marie Antoinette. We are looking forward to see what these talented
students produce for their HSC major textiles Projects!

T.A.S update
New staffroom, new classroom and a friendly
new face a great start for 2010.
We would like to welcome Mr Nikolai Liu to
the faculty filling in for Mr Plant. Mr Liu
brings lots of youthfulness, energy and
excitement to the TAS faculty.
We would also like to send our best wishes as our thoughts go
out to Mr Plant with his continuing recovery from injury.
The TAS faculty are finally settling into their new staffroom,
which is now located upstairs in Curie block, which is a relief
after all the packing and having to move twice during Term 4
2009.
The Food Technology room
(CU 4) upgrade has been
completed over the Christmas
school holidays and the kitchen
looks amazing. A very
professional looking kitchen
which includes upgraded
equipment, new flooring, stainless steel benches and ducted
exhaust system.
The students in junior and senior Food Technology and VET
Hospitality course will all now gain a better understanding of
food industry requirements within a kitchen.
Attached to the kitchen is the learning space/ seminar room
for students, this is spacious and is ready for the new
technology to be set up in the room.
A reminder to all parents and students using the
TAS kitchens, sewing room and workshops you
need to be wearing the correct footwear and/ or
cloth apron in ALL required lessons due to safety
requirements. Please also ensure fee payments are submitted

YEAR EIGHT CITYSCAPE EXCURSION
Music Tour 2009 On the 24th of February, year 8 went to the city for an art
excursion, for the subject
“cityscape”.
As soon as the first bus arrived at
Milsons Point we started to do some
activities including pattern rubbings, drawing the harbour bridge
from different angles and sketching
the Luna Park face.
After an hour we walked over the
harbour bridge enjoying the sights.
Here we could take photos of all the different patterns around
us. We also took pictures of the
harbour and the Sydney Opera
House. The views were great from
up there!
Finally, once we had crossed to the
other side, we took a right at the
stairs and went to the Sydney Observatory Park. We then completed
some art making activities including sketching the city skyline, taking photographs and drawing the
Observatory Park rotunda.
After a fun and enjoyable day, we boarded the bus home at
around two. It was a relief that it wasn’t too hot and we had a
great time walking, taking pictures and having a good day
with our friends.

Yr 9 Visual Art Beach Excursion
On Friday the 19th February, the Elective
Visual Art classes went to Mona Vale
Beach to participate in different art making workshops.
The first workshop we attended was collecting objects that were washed to the
shore with Ms Dawson. We then later sketched and painted
with water colours. It was interesting to see various types of
beach life such as shells, fish bones, parts of blue bottles etc.
We then moved onto to the next workshop with Ms
Minogue. We experimented with graphite and charcoal
pencils, drawing the coastline and seeweed.
The last activity for my group was the underwater photography with Ms Saunders and Ms Kontominas. We split into
small groups and photographed a variety of objects, from broken iPods to other types of technology and sea life.
Overall, we had a great day at our
beach excursion, working with each
other and our teachers. Thankyou to
the art teachers and Ms Kontominas
for making this excursion possible.
On Saturday 12th December 2009 at 7am, a group of 48 students accompanied by Ms Newman, Ms Tarasenko, Mrs
Cupitt and Mr Steptoe embarked on a 7 hour journey northwest to Coonabarabran for the annual Music Tour. The time
on the bus seemed to go by quickly with the help of DVDs,
iPods, some sleep and of course a well needed rest stop at
McDonalds.
On our arrival into the town centre of Coonabarabran, it was
time for lunch. Although there were several food places to
choose from, Subway and the large Woolworths store seemed
to be the most popular lunch spots. Our first impressions of
Coonabarabran was that we had arrived into a small
(population 2000) but very pretty town.
After lunch, it was time to get settled into our accommodation
at the Warrumbungle Mountain Motel. The rooms were well
outfitted with each room having air-conditioning and even a
kitchenette. After sorting out who was sleeping where, we
spent the afternoon in rehearsals for our up-coming concerts.
After rehearsals, it was time for dinner, we were quite spoilt
for choice with our meals, with many students opting for seconds. After dinner, it was time to get ready for the games
night. We were lucky to have five yr12 students that were able
to attend the tour. Their leadership skills during the evening
ensured that everyone participated and had a fun night.
Day Two – Sunday
After a 7am wakeup call by Ms Newman, we headed to breakfast at 8am, then prepared for the day ahead. This included
loading up the bus with all of our equipment and instruments,
then heading off to our first concert of the tour. This performance was held at the Cooinda Nursing Home. Our elderly audience was treated to a concert with musical items by the
Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, the Ku-ring-gai Singers and
a few other individual items. After a successful concert, it was
time to do some sight-seeing of the Coonabarbran town centre.
This included a visit to the Information Centre to visit the
Megafauna Museum, followed by lunch at the park, then a
walk to the Crystal Palace. We then returned
back to our accommodation in the afternoon
where we got to enjoy an
afternoon of swimming in
the pool and playing some
ball games on the oval.

ANNUAL GENERAL P & C MEETING Monday 8th March 7pm
After dinner, it was time to go for a night time walk to visit
the local observatory. There, we were able to look through
several different telescopes and also just sit back and enjoy
the sky which put on an impressive star show for us.
After dinner, the highly anticipated Annual Talent Quest
began. There was a large variety of items that were presented,
ranging from literature to dance to musical items.
Day Five – Wednesday 16th December 2009
Day Three – Monday
Today our wakeup call was at 6.30am. We had breakfast and
then got onto the bus to begin our 45 minute drive to a nearby
town called Baradine. Upon the arrival of our coach at Baradine Central School which is a K-12 school with a student
population of 150 students, our students were welcomed by a
group of excited students of varying ages. The students
participated enthusiastically during the concert with the
Baradine Central School staff truly grateful and appreciative
that their school was selected as part of our tour. We left
Baradine Central School with an almost ‘rock star’ status with
most of the school population waiting by the gate to wave our
coach goodbye.
After the concert, it
was time to continue
exploring this beautiful region. We began
with a visit to the Pilliga Forest Discovery
Centre where we were
encouraged to touch
and actively participate in many of the
exhibits in this centre.
After lunch at the
park, we went on a walk to the Sandstone Caves in the Pilliga
Forest. We were provided with many interesting facts on the
region and the caves by an Aboriginal elder, who acted as our
tour guide. We arrived back at our accommodation late afternoon, ending the day with dinner followed by Trivia Night.
Day Four – Tuesday
Today was our final day of concerts for the tour. We visited
Coonabarabran Public School where we performed two
shows. Audience participation was excellent and our concert
was of an exceptional standard with the school principal
requesting that we return again one day. After lunch, we all
went on a very short walk through the Warrumbungles
National Park, then students were given the option to go on a
longer and more challenging walk with Ms Newman and Mr
Steptoe or return to camp to rehearse for Talent quest. Well
done to those students who took on the challenge, they were
rewarded with amazing views of the Warrumbungles.
After a highly successful music tour, it was finally time to
head home to Sydney. With a few students falling sick on the
way home, the coach trip home was long with several additional stops along the way, with the coach finally returning to
KCAHS at 9pm.
A very big thank you to Ms Newman for her organization of
this tour, as a result of her efforts, I am certain that all
students will have lifetime memories from this week away on
Music Tour at Coonabarabran.

Fun away from home
Year 7 students embarked upon the Great Aussie Bush
Camp for three days. The staff and students had a great
time trying different activities such as the giant swing,
kayaking, raft building, flying fox and anti-bullying
sessions throughout the day.
Everyone got in to the spirit of commando which was on
the first night of camp. Whilst students crawled through
the bush and tried their best to stealth their way to free
the hostages, the teachers were too good! Mr Baker was
in supreme form not allowing any year 7’s to get
through to the hostages.
On the second night of camp, students dressed up for the
famous disco. We had some great dancing tips from the
camp instructors who showed us famous dance moves
from around the globe, including the German move. We
all had a great time and we danced until we couldn’t
walk!
Thank you to Miss Vidler, Mr Baker, Ms Kelen, Ms
Julius, Mr Gahan and peer support leaders who made the
camp a successful and fun time!

School Information
White House VET course
Drawing fashion figures, using Pantone markers, painting gauche colour samples, experimenting with Adobe
illustrator and producing multiple mood boards were
just some of the many activities I did in the school holidays. These were not the ‘normal’ holidays like I had
previously experienced during my schooling life; these
were fast paced, productive and also fun. Myself and
Catlin Robson completed our Certificate II in ‘Fashion
design and Visualisation’ at the Whitehouse Institute of
Fashion in the city during three of our holiday breaks.
This Vocational Education and Training course (VET)
was a fantastic opportunity to expand my knowledge
and skill base, allowing me to complete 2 units (non
UAI) during my holiday breaks.
During the holidays Catlin and I attended six weeks of
face to face learning, 9am till 5pm. The time was spread
out; one week in April, two weeks in June and three
weeks in January which we have just completed.
I must say I was apprehensive at the beginning of the
course. Although I love fashion design and textiles the
thought of a majority of my holidays being taken up by
a course while every one was catching up with each
other or getting their school projects completed, was a
little frustrating. The first week was a little tedious, as
we completed colour swatches using gauche. These
were no ordinary swatches I might add, we were under
clear instructions that they had to be ‘non streaky, well
mixed and mounted to a high standard’, not to mention
match the exact colours on the board (we were doing
colour gradation e.g. blue, blue-blue-blue yellow, blueblue-yellow-yellow, etc).
I remember taking my piece of A3 paper up to the front
of the large room, where over 80 students sat, to a table
of three teachers. They compared it to the example and I
had to change 5 of my swatches. I repeated this process
quite a few times, each time getting more frustrated
(because of the blue-purple). After I completed the task I
submitted it for marking. I was pretty happy with my
work, I knew I had tried hard. I picked up my folder and
looked at the marking sheet in dismay. I received a C+!
Our VET teacher must have heard every one talking , so
she came to the front to address us, she explained that no
one got over a B and that the average was a C+. She also
continued to explain that our skills had not developed or
grown, we had just started. They expected a high standard and it was unrealistic to achieve that high standard
without those necessary skills.
Through out the course every one strived for higher
marks; gaining the necessary tools and skills along the
way. Without realising your knowledge does grow and
expand; from gaining confidence through presenting and
marketing a product to the class to using Adobe illustrator for the first time, creating 50 virtual layer. At the end
of the course I looked back on my C+ and can understand why I received that mark. I can compare it to the
work at the end of my course and it is obvious that there
is a considerable difference in the skill level.
Catlin and I both received an ‘A’ for our portfolios,
which is a pleasing result. Although more importantly
than the completed portfolio is the wealth of knowledge
and experiences that we gained from the course.
Whether it be meeting new people, perspective drawing
or computer generated designs. The course was intense
and stressful at times, although it was fascinating and a
lot of fun!

“For the ancient mariner, the value of a guiding star was beyond
measure. Its position and height could be calculated, but its true
worth in leading the way home was priceless for those far out at
sea.”
While most of us no longer look to the heavens for a guiding star, we
all need positive direction at times in our lives – our own set of guiding principles and values, to successfully and safely navigate through
life and reach our full potential.
Motivational Media’s production TRUE NORTH Setting Your
Compass for Life’s Journey was screened to all our students on
Monday 1st February. This high energy production focused on True
Goals, True Values, True Friendships and True Directions. The five
scenarios featured in this multimedia production revealed true stories
of overcoming adversity through positive behaviour and developing
meaningful relationships and I encourage students to discuss with
their families the concepts and issues that were raised.

The Student Planner
These planners have been designed specifically to enhance your
child academically, socially, culturally and personally. I encourage
you to read your child’s planner on a regular basis (apart from the
mandatory weekly signature!) and discuss the activities your child is
engaging in during roll call.
Each week, during roll call, a “Study Focus” is introduced on the left
hand side of the planner page. These focuses are designed to initiate
discussion, both at school and at home, on the issues contained and
promote a Team approach.
Working on the assumption that the students open their planners 40
to 50 times per week, there is adequate time and opportunity for the
strategy/skill to “drip feed” into their study habits; something they do
often and easily.
The key elements to a successful study program are not only “doing
the right thing” but also “doing the thing right”. At times, students have the best of intentions and are prepared to commit themselves, but unfortunately are let down by poor and unproductive
study habits.
To gain an understanding of the best way to support your son or
daughter is to visit the website www.learningcurveplanner.com.au
and access the parent and student pages. (Refer to page 3 of the Student planner.)
Remember, if you have any concerns about your teenager’s school
experiences contact their Year Advisor: Year 7 – Ms Stevenson,

ANNUAL GENERAL P & C MEETING Monday 8th March 7pm
Swine Flu Alert
Pandemic influenza vaccination available for
children
aged ten years and over
NSW Health reminds parents and caregivers that a
vaccination for pandemic influenza A (H1N1), also
called swine flu, is available for children aged ten
years and over. The vaccine is available free from your
general practitioner or Aboriginal Medical Service,
although your doctor may charge a consultation fee.
Pandemic influenza activity peaked in July in NSW and
levels of disease are now at levels expected for this
time of the year, however cases are still occurring
occasionally. The Northern Hemisphere is reporting
high levels of activity. Parents should consider the
increased risk which may present over the holiday
season by travelling to areas overseas where pandemic
influenza is very common and by contact with overseas
visitors.
The vaccine has undergone trials to test its safety and
how well it works and has been registered by the
Therapeutic Goods Administration. The vaccine
requires one dose in those aged ten years and over,
delivered by injection into the upper arm. Vaccinations
for children under aged ten years are expected to be
available in late November or early December.
Who should get the vaccination?
Anyone aged ten years and over who wishes to be
protected from pandemic influenza can be vaccinated. It
is especially important that people at increased risk of
severe illness from influenza, and those who care for
them, are vaccinated.
During this pandemic Aboriginal people have been more
likely to develop severe illness from influenza. For this
reason vaccination is highly recommended for
Aboriginal people, particularly those who are in one or
more of the risk groups listed above.
Who should NOT get the vaccination?
Some people should not have the vaccination. This
includes people who:



have a severe allergy to eggs
have had anaphylaxis (a severe allergic
reaction) following any vaccine component
have had anaphylaxis following a previous dose
of any influenza vaccine.
More information about the vaccine is available from
NSW Health’s swine flu website:
http://www.emergency.health.nsw.gov.au/.
Please read this information to make an informed
decision about vaccinating your child.

Proper footwear plays a dominant role in your child maximising course outcomes in both PE and Sport. It would be of
benefit to them to wear proper running shoes. Students have
been spoken to about wearing a more appropriate style shoe.
Biomechanically, a good running shoe should see your child
reach their full potential. In the short term, students here at
KCAHS will be involved in modified game activities, circuit
training, fitness testing, cross country and athletics. These
activities all will require sustained activity. Students are
spoken to about the benefits of appropriate running shoes and
we as teachers also model this as well. We urge parents to
once again monitor the footwear that our students pack for
PE/Sport and support us by encouraging a better shoe option.
Students will be permitted to leave the school premises at the
conclusion of the day in their practical PE equipment with the
You will find a curriculum outline of our PDHPE program in
the “Orientation to PDHPE” section of your child’s workbook. Books have a colour coded cover according to year
group; Year 7 is red, Year 8 is blue and Year 9 is green. In
addition, Year 10 will be using their DET laptop and working
through a myriad of interactive activities with OneNote being
the basis for this program. Students have already been asked
to complete homework activities. Please encourage your child
to show you their PDHPE workbook and sign the parent information note. Parents are also encouraged to check their
child’s work and review the content covered in class by their
teacher where possible.
PDHPE, Integrated Sport, NOVA and PASS – A number
of students have elected to do all four areas. This may pose
some hygiene issues particularly if students have back to back
classes. Students may require a second set of PE prac gear
particularly if it cannot be washed and dried overnight. The
librarian Mrs Petlevanny has some great second hand sports
gear that you may purchase for a fraction of the cost. This
may ease the stress for both parent and student during the
week. Enquiries can be made directly regarding second hand
sports gear or school uniform by contacting the school.
Our numbers for the Preliminary HSC course in CAFS
and PDHPE look quite healthy for 2010. The PDHPE group
will also be engaging in a number of activities throughout the
year. In addition, we are also investigating the possibility of
visiting the University of Sydney for our Year 11 PDHPE
students to complete a physiology and biomechanics performance laboratory. Further, we are also looking at a visit by the
RLSSA to provide instruction in first aid, emergency care and
resuscitation course. This will lead to a number of awards that
are workcover accredited. We are also investigating some
options for CAFS during semester one.

The faculty would like to congratulate the following Community and Family Studies and Personal Development, Health
and Physical Education students in scoring either a band 5 or

2010 Electives
We have had a great response from the 2009 Year 8 cohort
for the PASS (Physical Activity and Sport Studies) elective
following our active promotion of this subject. Planning of
specific activities is already underway. Last year our Year 9
students were able to visit Homebush Olympic Park –
Monster Park and golf driving range with expert coaching by
the club professional. Students from Year 10 were able to
travel to Manly beach for a stint at surfing and beach safety.
We look forward to broadening our horizon this year.
The School Sports Captains for 2010 are Natalie Morgan and
Scott Southam. The Vice Captains are Marlee Redshaw and
Charles Skelly. All students are Year 12 and were required to
nominate for the position. The position oversees a range of
school and zone competitions. Our leaders will also be required to assist the school sports organisers where needed.
School House Captains
Students from each House were required to nominate and vote
for students to help lead their respective House. The following
students have been successful in gaining the position of either
captain or vice captain.

Swim School - 2009
Year 7, 2009 were able to improve on their swim skills and
resuscitation technique during our annual aquatics program.
Thanks again to Ms Julius in particular for planning such a
dynamic program. In addition, I would like to thank the staff
associated with the program as well as several students from
the Year 9 PASS elective class who also assisted in the
program. The following students received a Head Teachers
award for their service to the program; Nadia Hulsbos,
Monique Scruton, Erin Shields, Harry Skelly, Luke
Jongens, Mitchell and Douglas Hodder. We have already
received positive feedback about this program from parents
and community members. Students will be receiving their
swim and survive awards during term 1. We look forward in
engaging the 2010 Year 7 group in the same manner.
Premier’s Sporting Challenge
Last year our Year 7 and Year 8 participated in the PSC
program. Students logged in their weekly physical activity
levels which may have been doing PE at school through to
walking their dog after school hours. Most students secured a
silver level which is indicative of 320 minutes of physical
activity. Year 8 2009 have already received their PSC awards.
Year 7 2009 are due to receive theirs in week 2, term 1.

From the Careers Department
TVET Students
Year 11 and 12 TVET students have settled into TAFE
well this year and are enjoying their TVET courses. The
TVET coordinators have asked me to remind all
students that they must attend TAFE each week for the
whole time the class is scheduled. The only time a student will be given permission to be absent or leave early
from class is in the case of a school sponsored event eg
school exam, school excursion, school camp. Prior notification must be given to the TAFE teacher, TVET coordinator and myself. Appointments, driving tests, dinner
engagements etc are not legitimate reasons for absence
from TAFE. It is the students’ responsibility to contact
the TAFE teacher, TVET coordinator and myself if they
are unable to attend TAFE due to illness. A doctor’s certificate is required as proof of illness if an assessment
task is missed. It is TAFE policy this year, that all
TVET students wear school uniform while attending
TAFE.
Year 10 Work Experience
Year 10 students are now planning for their Work
Experience. Students have been given the necessary paper work and some students have secured positions already. When the paper work is completed, please return

From the Careers and Transition
team
The School to Work garden project is now complete. A small group of students from years 8 to 11,
have worked hard to transform an unappealing area
next to the Quad, into a beautiful native garden.
As well as teaching the group about co-operation
and team work, the project has also been about persistence, since much of the work was carried out in
the heat or rain. Students were involved in the planning phase, the construction phase and finally the
finishing stage when a variety of native plants were
used. Parents might be surprised to know that their
sons and daughters gained new skills in landscaping, especially those relating to paving.
The following photos clearly show the extent of the
transformation
