President’s Message
The Summer is flying by so fast that it seems it’ll be
gone before we know it, and, all too soon - the leaves
will be falling!
Another successful Regional Specialty was put on by
our Club at Portland’s Stumptown Cluster, in July – and
our CACDC Herding Trial at High Country Farm on August
2nd and 3rd was a huge success as well! Congratulations
to all of those who won and who placed at these Events!
Many thanks are in order, to those Club Members who
worked so hard on these projects to make both events
run so smoothly: it is to you and to all of your hard work
that we owe MUCH gratitude!
I have been touched and inspired this year by the
manner in which this Club has shown the willingness to
pull together to support its fellow members; I’ve also
been amazed by the energy and efficiency with which
our members can pull together to make things happen
– from putting on our Shows and Trials to creating Breed
Booths for Shows & Public Education Days, or getting our
Fun Day put together and orchestrated! This takes willing
volunteers and lots of dedication, and our Club excels in
these.
I am always so very proud to be a member of our Club
when I see the camaraderie as members congratulate a
Class Winner or our newest ACD Champion at Ringside,
or applaud a fellow members’ Herding run.
CACDC is a great group of Cattle Dog Loving People and
I am proud to be one of you. It has been a great year so
far, and there’s more to come as we look toward planning
for next years’ events and happenings.
Cascade Members: YOU ROCK!!! It’s been a GREAT
Summer!

Stumptown Specialty 2008
Thanks to the efforts and hard work of Show Chair and Club Secretary Michelle Pardee,
our Regional Specialty held at the Stumptown Cluster, Portland Expo Center on July 18th
was a big success!
Club Members and Cattle Dog Exhibitors and fanciers from across the region got together
for some fine and friendly competition and there were some beautiful dogs and fine handling
to be seen in the Ring.

Cascade Herding Trial
Held at High Country Farm
Was a HUGE Success!
By Alison Dielke
First, I would like to thank all of the
volunteers who make this trial possible…
Chief Ring Steward Jim Beckley, who pulled
his camping gear out of mothballs and
organized all of our timers and scribes –
and who also timed and scribed, himself!
Timers and scribes: Liz Stenning, Lynn
Carter, Alice Kapelos, Julie Pulliam, and
Linda Bell….Thank you!
Michelle Rogers, who must have run a
marathon that weekend with the score
sheets! Wow, we’ve never had a better
runner! Every time I would head out to
try and relieve her by bringing in some
sheets, she was already there – (Michelle,
How did you do that? <g>)
Our stock handlers extraordinaire!
Michelle Pardee and Shirley Oberg, who
worked the cattle arena with Ron Fischer
on Saturday and Pam Carter on Sunday;
and who also worked the duck arena both
days. Pam Carter: pinch hitter on ‘B’
course and cattle, Dave Larson and Karyl
Hanson: ‘A’
course sheep pens; Kathleen Torkleson:
‘A’ course sheep setter (together with the
amazing Kelpie, Zen!) Heidi and Pete:
‘B’ course set out. Dave Larson was also
a huge help to Mom by getting up early
every morning and feeding the livestock,
and helping me sort the ‘A’ course sheep.
Brenda, Patty and Bob, and Lisa Silvernale
- Hospitality crew...wow! You guys never
cease to amaze us all! Our out-of-town
judge, Rusty Jeffers, said that the CA
judges have a scoring system for food at
trials...1 being the dregs and 5 being the
ultimate...he gave Brenda and Patty a 5
plus! I wish you all could have seen the
look on Rusty’s face when I was out trying
to get those score sheets Michelle was so
quick to snag. He asked if I could send
some more
water down, no sooner had he asked
when here comes Brenda and Blake with
rootbeer floats! He said, “Water..or a
rootbeer float? that works!” LOL!
I also have to thank:
Blake, for entertaining Bob and Brenda
and helping out where he could;
and Mom, for having such a nice farm
and stock, and allowing us to take over
the property during another fantastic trial
weekend.
A big Thank You also goes out to Lynn
Leach, Linda Bell, Maureen, Dave and
Karyl, and Liz Stenning for helping us put
all the tarps up and finish setting up the
trials site. Linda Bell, Lynn Leach, and
Michelle Rogers took down all those tarps
with out ever being asked it was just done
by Sunday afternoon...thanks so much
that makes a huge difference for us not
having to take tarps down.
SJ and John, for once again supplying the
cattle, and Charlotte, for supplying the
ducks.
Of course, thanks also to all the competitors
who came from far and wide to attend our
trial. The farthest-traveled this year was
Robert Ewing from CA, and Judy Gabarino
from Idaho.
Alison
Editor’s Note:
Club Treasurer Patty Carey also reports
that our Herding Trial was ‘in the black’
- and that we made a profit! Way To Go,
Cascade Club!

III. Approval of minutes from last meeting
(any additions or corrections?)
Alison D. made a motion to approve the
minutes, seconded by Lynn C. Passed
unanimously.
IV. Presidents report
A gift of a beautiful floral arrangement
was sent to member Sara-Jo Gahm on
behalf of
CACDC following her recent surgery. SaraJo is recovering well and the pathology
came back with good news: all was
benign.
The Club’s recent Work Day at On the
Lamb Farm was a success and thanks are
in
order to all who pitched in or sent their
best wishes and support to SJ.
Our Club has submitted a completed
Statement of Compliance to the AKC
which meets
the new AKC Eligibility Requirements to
hold future dog shows. This means next
year’s Rose City Specialty will go ahead as
planned!
(post script: since the club meeting we
have learned from the AKC that as the
CACDC territory center is located in Salem,
Oregon and our two conformation
shows are held beyond our “territory”,
that we as a club would have to fulfill
more of the compliance requirements. As
this puts an undue burden on our
club, we are requesting a provisional
compliance for 2009 while we sort out
our
club territory issues with the AKC.)
A refrigerator has been located and will be
in place for our upcoming Herding Trial at
High Country Farm.
V. Secretary’s Report
Nothing to report
VI. Membership Secretary’s Report
No report requested
VII. Treasurers Report
Treasurer Patty Carey reports that the
current balance is $7,727.17 but we
haven’t
paid all the specialty bills yet, and of course
we have the herding trial coming up.
VIII. Election of New Members
No new membership applications to
consider.
IX. Unfinished Business
CACDC Meeting Agenda
7/18/2008
a) Herding Trial
Herding trial August 2-3 at High Country
Farm. Jim Beckley, the Chief Ring
Steward, is still looking for volunteers for
scribes, timers and runners.
b) Rose City
Michelle reported that the paperwork has
been submitted to conduct the
January Specialty and is being reviewed
by AKC. The judge for our
regular/non-regular classes has been
contracted. Dr. Robert Brown has agreed
to judge for us, and as he is an AKC
delegate we will only have to pay his
expenses for the day of the show. We are
still looking for a Sweeps judge.
Ann Quigley has been suggested and
inquiries will be made.
A discussion was held around the ability of
the show chair to enter, handle or
have a dog handled at the specialty. Kathy
Hamilton explained that while this
was a club tradition, there are no
restrictions from the AKC on the show
chair’s
participation. This has been a tradition in
the club to allow the Show Chair the
ability to focus on the job of coordinating
and managing the show. However, it
was discussed that having a co-chair would
allow the all members to participate
and still have the details of the show
managed. Lynda Rocksvold volunteered
to co-chair the Rose City Specialty.
c) Fund Raising
Discussed again the idea of hosting a DOT
coffee stand as a fund raiser. At this
stage there does not seem to be the level
of participation that we would need
to staff the rest stop for a full weekend,
24 hours a day. Lynda made a motion
to table this fund raising effort until the
club was of a size that this could be
considered. Lynn seconded the motion.
The motion was passed.
X. New business
a) Breeder Referral
In order for the club to meet one of the
AKC Eligibility Requirements, the board
has proposed to offer a breeder referral
service. Jim Beckley has volunteered
to keep a current listing of breeders in our
club who are anticipating litters and
have puppies ready to find homes. A new
page will be added to the club
website directing interested visitors to
contact Jim and he will be able to give
them current information. Screening the
applicants will still be the
responsibility of the individual breeder.
Kathy made the motion to approve the
Breeder Referral program for CACDC. The
motion was seconded by Lynn and
was passed by the members.
b) Standing Committees
Michelle P. brought up that at various
times the idea of having standing
committees (fundraising, herding, judging,
etc) have been discussed both in
previous meetings and in side conversations.
After much discussion it was
decided that there would not be a benefit
to having set standing committees,
but rather, keep with the tradition and
culture of our club to allow members
who are willing to take on various projects
do so without formalizing the
process.
CACDC Meeting Agenda
7/18/2008
d) Fundraising idea
Lisa Silvernale has submitted a fund raising
idea: that the Club should produce
a cookbook that could be offered for sale
through our website and at shows and
trials. Members would be asked to submit
favorite recipes, photos of their
dogs, etc., to be compiled into a cookbook
that could be a simple comb-bound
book. Jane Ward has volunteered to head
the committee to work on this
fundraising project.
c) New Member Communication
Linda Conroy mentioned that she has had
some difficulty getting all the
communication from the club and it was

Obituary
CACDC says a sad farewell to a friend of
many, a supporter of our Breed, and a
gentle man of great integrity and spirit.
Norman Leo Herbel
12/7/1936 - 8/10/2008
NORMAN LEO HERBEL, son of Carl and Elsie
(Kaufman) Herbel, was born December 7,
1936 at Lucas, Kansas. He departed this
life on Sunday morning August 10, 2008
at the Woodward Regional Hospital at
Woodward, Oklahoma. He was 71 years
of age.
Norman was raised and educated at Lucas,
Kansas and graduated from Lucas High
School with the class of 1955. He furthered
his education at the University of Kansas
in Lawrence where he graduated with a
Bachelor degree in Physical Education.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn Ann
Heinze on June 6, 1956 at Lucas, Kansas.
They had two children: Carmen and Kent.
Norman taught physical education classes
in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania school
system. Norman and Carolyn became dog
enthusiasts, especially with the Lhasa
Apso breed and German Shepherd Dogs.
Norman and Carolyn spent their lifetime
enjoying the German Shepherd Dogs.
Later in life, “Charm”, a special German
Shepherd, BIS, BISS, A.O.E., Am Sel.
Ex. Can Sel. Am/Can Ch. Kaleef’s Silver
Charm of Tabu, HT, ROM, was the light of
his life. Together he and Carolyn wrote
three books on the Lhasa Apso dogs. He
traveled all over showing and judging all
breeds of dogs and was known as a multigroup judge. He was a world renowned
dog judge. Before retiring to Oklahoma,
Norman and his brother Clayton bred L1
registered Hereford Cattle. The breeding
program they developed has influenced
Hereford Cattle all over the United States.
Recently he was instrumental in helping
Mark and Lacey Herbel Syzemore and Kent
and Lori Herbel begin an exciting brood
mare band of registered Quarter Horses.
He was also a lover of the land and in
1987, they purchased a ranch in southern
Dewey County in the Putnam community
where they moved and have lived since.
He was a devout Christian man who loved
his family dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Herbel
of the home; one daughter: Carmen
Spears and husband Max of Putnam; one
son: Kent Herbel and wife Lori of Putnam;
two granddaughters: Lacey HerbelSyzemore and husband Mark of Putnam
and Kelli Herbel and her fiancé Waylon
Bausch both of Hoyt, Kansas; one great
grandson: Warren Syzemore; dear friends:
Nancy and Jim Plunkett of Greencastle,
PA; his mother-in-law: Anna Marie Heinze
of Putnam; one sister: Barbara Reeves
of Russell, KS and one brother: Clayton
Herbel and wife Kathi of Lucas, KS. He
is also survived by many other relatives
and friends. He was preceded in death by
his parents and two grandsons: Matthew
Spears and Clay Herbel.
In accordance with the wishes of the
Herbel Family, a donation was made by our
Cascade Australian Cattle Dog Club in lieu
of flowers, and a card of Remembrance was
sent to the family. Our Club donated $75
to Australian Cattle Dog Rescue through
Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue, in memory
of Norman Leo Herbel.
Letter From Carolyn Herbel and Family
To CACDC
Dear Members
Of the Cascade Australian Cattle Dog Club,
Thank you so very much for your contribution
in Norman’s name to the Seattle Purebred
Dog Rescue. He would be so very pleased
to know that this gift will help to find homes
for needy Cattle Dogs. He was a giving
man and his legacy continues through your
contribution.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Herbel and Family

but listen to you while you talk about
yourself, and keep up an appearance of
being interested in the conversation.” Jerome K. Jerome
CACDC Breeder Referral Program
Cascade Club now has a Breeder Referral
Program! Check out our web page about
this new program here:
http://www.cascadeacdclub.com/
available_acds.html .
Jim Beckley is our new Breeder Referral
Representative, and he looks forward to
helping persons who find their way to our
website while researching our breed to
locate all of our Club’s AKC breeders in this
region.
All Breeders or those planning to breed
should contact Jim with their information
and get their kennels on his roster. When
inquiries from people looking for Cattle Dogs
come in, he will forward all contact info that
he has been given by all of you Breeders to
them, and also let them know where there
are AKC pups or dogs available currently,
as well as where planned litters will be in
the near future. Keep Jim informed and let
him know what’s going on with your kennel
so that he can keep current and spread the
word about availability of quality AKC pups
& dogs in our area. If breeders are seeking
to re-home older dogs from their kennels,
let Jim know that too, as this doesn’t have
to be just about available pups.
This Service is intended to be only a
‘Clearinghouse’ of information. Our Breeder
Referral will not be screening puppy buyers
in any way, rather he will only be forwarding
what contact information that Breeders give
him, and the rest is up to the Breeders.
Our Breeder Referral is adamantly NOT
about pointing puppy seekers to any one
breeder’s kennel over any other. When
persons inquire, they will be given contact
info for ALL of our Member Breeders to aid
them in their research - and their search.
It is hoped that this service will be
welcome to our Club’s Breeders and that
through it, we will help to educate puppy
buyers seeking Australian Cattle Dogs.
Note, too, that our new web page also has
links and contact information for the public
about local ACD Rescue organizations, and
we would like to thank Liz Stenning for
providing this information so that we may
present a full and complete picture to the
Public.
We hope that our new page and our new
Breeder Referral Service will help those
interested in owning Cattle Dogs to find
their way to the pup or dog that is right for
them.
Full Compliance Granted By AKC
To CACDC for Meeting 2009
Eligibility Requirements to Hold Future
Dog Shows
The AKC now requires Clubs to meet
certain Eligibility Requirements in order to
hold Dog Shows (for us, that means being
able to hold our two Regionals…or NOT).
This new program was approved by AKC just
this year. We have discussed this program
at this year’s past meetings.
Among the Requirements Clubs must meet
are tasks such as hosting, or taking part
in, an AKC Educational Match; hosting an
AKC Canine Good Citizen Test; hosting a
Meet The Breeds Booth at an approved AKC
Show; creating a Breeder Referral Service
within our Club, to name a few examples as well as a number of other requirements
from which Clubs may choose in order
to satisfy the AKC’s Requirements, and
thereby continue to hold their Shows.
This new AKC Eligibility Program is
intended to help Clubs focus on educating
the public about, and promoting, the Sport
of Purebred Dogs.
Each year, our Club will be responsible
for submitting proof to the AKC that we
have fulfilled our specific number of these
Requirements in order to gain approval for
our following year’s shows. I am proud and
relieved, and very happy to report that
CACDC has been granted full Compliance
for our upcoming 2009 Shows based upon
our efforts in this year of 2008…The Shows
WILL go on!

A full listing in .pdf form of the AKC’s
Requirements may be seen on the AKC.org
website here: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/

Our Club met Requirements with our
creation of a Breeder Referral Service, with
our Seattle Kennel Club Show Breed/Rescue
Booth, our Breed Booth at Tualatin Kennel
Club, with our Fun Day’s events, and with
many aspects of our new Website. We plan
to enter the AKC Classified Advertising
Program to further meet Requirements. See
.pdf file detailing the Classifed Advertising
Program here:

And also: How would Members feel about
fitting an AKC Canine Good Citizen Test into
our next Fun Day? Sound like FUN? Let’s
DO it!
“He is your friend, your partner, your
defender, your dog. You are his life, his

CACDC News Interview
With Patti Salladay
For this issue of our CACDC Newsletter, we cast our
Interview spotlight on Patti Salladay, (Catchpen Kennels). A highly respected longtime breeder and fancier of the Australian Cattle Dog, as well as a founding
member of CACDC and past President of our Club,
Patti shares her insight and wisdom about our breed
here.
Editor: What was it about Australian Cattle Dogs that first attracted you to them as your
breed of choice?
Patti Salladay: “My brother was a ranch foreman in eastern Oregon and they had several
blue dogs that helped. I spent my vacations with him and he had a little blue ‘dingo’
named Kitty. She was so devoted to my brother and all he ever had to do was talk to her
and she went about her chores. I tried for weeks to make friends and she just tolerated
me. Her best game was to let me into the bunkhouse but every day she would heel me
thru the steps walking down them. More than one time she sent me flying. She always
seemed to be one step ahead of everyone. I fell in love and came back and went on the
‘dingo’ search.”
Editor: How long have you been involved with the Breed now?
Patti: “My first ACD’s were national stock dogs – Beau and Foxy. I checked my records
and they were registered in 1978. We ran roping practice in Madras Oregon and the
dogs were used to push steers and bring them back to the chutes. I purchased my first
registered ACD in 1980 from Maxine Johnston, LAMAJO Kennels.”
Editor: What was your proudest moment, or your greatest accomplishment with your dogs?
Patti: “My greatest accomplishment would have to be when “Willie”
(BIS/BISS Ch Catchpens Willin’N’Able PT), was the first dog in the history of the breed in Canada to receive his BIS and BISS. Last years’
Best Veteran in Sweeps under Breeder Judge, Lori Pruett, was just as
special: to know that at 11 years old, he is still sound in mind and body
and feeling frisky.”
Editor: What are some of your thoughts about the Breed in years past, when compared
to the dogs of Today?
Patti: “Years ago we had a limited gene pool to draw from, and I feel the old time breeders had a better perspective on the standard and showing only quality dogs. Most dogs
were owner handled. The problem with that was we had more genetic issues.
Entering into the picture was genetic testing, which is good but I feel the overall quality
and consistency has diminished due to new breeders not taking advantage of mentors,
breeding for genetics, and adding professional handlers not involved in the breed.”
Editor: What do you look for most in a dog? What makes him a ‘good’ dog in your
eyes?
Patti: “I look for a dog that fits our standard.”
Editor: What do you consider as the worst faults that breeders should work away
from?
Patti: “Weak heads, and bad feet.”
Editor: If there were one piece of advice you’d want to share with all breeders and fanciers of Australian Cattle Dogs, what would it be?
Patti: “Do not be afraid to ask for advice from the long time breeders. Do your homework before you breed. A lot of people believe that just because they finish a dog, that
dog needs to be bred. Be subjective and honest in your evaluations, and ask what can
this dog add to make the ACD breed better?”
Editor: What, in your view, is the biggest problem facing our Breed today?
Patti: “Too many people breeding for the moment, instead of the future.”
Editor: What goals do you look forward to your dogs achieving in the future?
Patti: “I have semi-retired from showing, and am putting my focus on breeding. I am
excited to breed some nice bitches with semen from our old bloodlines and to watch
those puppies grow.
My ultimate achievement will be to have those puppies compete in all areas of the ACD
sport.”
Editor: What is the one thing about the Australian Cattle Dog that stands out to you
personally, as his greatest attribute?
Patti: “Their ability to think and reason. (And of course Rikki sitting on the couch with
me watching TV).”
CACDC Cooks!
At Stumptown’s Meeting CACDC members
voted on the creation of a Cookbook as a
Fundraiser. Every year we enjoy potluck
goodies at various Club functions, and
we always look forward to the awesome
hospitality of Brenda & Patty at our Herding Trial. So often, someone will say, “We
should make a Cookbook!”
Now is your chance! Member Lisa Silvernale submitted this suggestion to the
Stumptown Meeting Agenda and members
loved the idea! Jane Ward volunteered to
spearhead this project and collect recipes
and photos.
The Cookbook can be offered for sale on
our website and at our shows and Trial,
or members could take a few copies to
Clinics they attend, there are lots of possibilities!
Do you have a favorite recipe and a photo that you would like to include? Or how
about a recipe you’ve enjoyed at a Club
function that you’ve wanted to get from
another member…like Alison’s famous
Poor Man’s Beef Wellington – yummmm…
Kathy’s incredible cookies…SJ’s awesome
Granola…you get the idea!
And don’t forget the dogs! How about
recipes for dog treats or goodies that people make for their special Cattle Dogs too?
It doesn’t have to be all about just people
food: we could have a section for the critters too.
Ideas? Recipes? Requests? Let’s get going
on this project and see what comes out
of it!
Get those favorite recipes together and
send them along to Jane Ward at
[email protected] .

Parker has been busy
this summer competing
in several ASCA herding trials. He completed
his Open duck with a
2nd place at the ASC of
WA herding trial at Fido
Farms. In July he competed in the ASC of BC
trial qualifying both days
in Open cattle. He won
the large open class both days. On Saturday he was HIT other breed and Sunday was HIT and Highest Scoring Dog on
cattle. I am very proud of the cow dog he
is becoming. Parker has earned HIT from
the Open level on sheep, cattle & ducks.
Parker picked up his first AKC Started
cattle leg at the All Breed herding trial
at Brigand’s HideOut. He placed 1st in
Started and was the only dog in the trial
to qualify that day. He was one of only
two dogs to qualify on cattle the whole
weekend. Good boy Parker. We managed
to fit in a few agility runs and completed
his Excellent Standard title and earned his
2nd leg in Excellent Jumpers.
Linda Conroy wirtes
Dandy won Best Bred By Exhibitor at the
Stumptown Cluster Specialty in Portland,
under judge
Carl Gene Liepmann. The following week,
she won Best Bred By again at Sequim
and went on to win 2nd place in a special
Group class for Bred By Exhibitor. Here is
a picture of her win under Judge Pat Hastings on Sat. July 26th.
Now it’s going to be a little slow in the
show ring as we are trying to get more of
our construction done on our house before winter hits!
