Week of January 31, 2016
A Word from the Dean
We are delighted to
have Archbishop and
Lady Carey (George and
Eileen), longtime friends
of the Advent, with us
for a week of preaching,
teaching, and worship.
Their presence among
us reminds us that we do not exist in isolation. The Church is not only a local institution, but also the body of believers around
the globe. Archbishop Carey represents
more than just his family and position, but
the Church. When he joins us for confirmation this Sunday, individuals will stand before
him and publicly declare their faith in the
Lord Jesus. He will then lay his hands upon
them, praying that the Holy Spirit would
work mightily through them. Archbishop
Carey is not “confirming” their faith. The
confirmands confirm their own faith by their
profession before the Church. The Archbishop represents the church at-large, witnessing the public declaration of those who are
joining the Church.
The Anglican Communion, as many
of you know, is made up of 38 provinces
around the world. Anglicanism is not just
North American Episcopalianism. I always
chuckle a little when I hear about the “Episcopal expression” of Christianity, or even
the “Episcopal faith,” as if it is in need of
differentiating itself. Indeed, we believe in
“the faith once delivered,” articulated in
the creeds and the Articles.
As a sign of the universal nature of the
Church, and our connection to the worldwide Anglican Communion, we will be
seeing a change in our communion liturgy
beginning this Sunday. Some of you may
not even notice, but the liturgy we will be
using is from the 1662 Book of Common
Prayer. We will retain the shape of the liturgy as outlined by our 1979 Book, but our
new “prayer of consecration” will be taken
from the 1662. A recent resolution at the
General Convention, and the graciousness
of Bishop Sloan, has allowed us to do this.
As an Anglican/Episcopal congregation,
we are committed to the Church and our
worship through “common prayer.” As we
come together Sunday after Sunday, let us
not forget that we are not alone, but stand
on the shoulders of those who have gone
before, as well as join hands with our brothers and sisters around the world. - Andrew
George Carey to Preach and Teach Sunday
Former Archbishop
of Canterbury George
Carey (left) will preach
at the 9:00 a.m. and
11:00 a.m. services this
Sunday, January 31. At
the 11:00 service he
will also confirm adults
and teenagers. Lord
Carey will lead a class
along with Dean Pearson, An Interview With
an Archbishop, at 10:10 a.m. in the Nave.
Lord Carey served as the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury, the most senior bishop of
the Anglican Communion, from 1991-2002.

This summer, bring your family and spend a week in the
beautiful mountains of North Carolina learning about God’s
plan for your life, enjoying great worship, connecting with
friends, encountering Christ in a profound way, and experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit. The Kanuga Renewal
Conference will be Sunday-Friday, June 26-July 1. The Rev.

resurrection of our Lord. Plus, Heidi Kinner will be one of
the chaplains, and Mark Gignilliat will do a workshop in

activities, hiking, swimming, visiting nearby Hendersonville,
