“The Break” A Periodic Update of What is Happening on the Beach for Breakers Athletes, Coaches and Parents July 3rd , 2014-Issue #5 Welcome to the fifth issue of THE BREAK. This will be a regular newsletter updating athletes, coaches and parents of all that is happening this summer in the sand and within the Breakers organization. What’s Happening Right Now? Hard to believe it is July already. Where has the time gone? However, as a Breaker, the month of July is going to be a wonderful month. We have three weekends in a row with beach tournaments here in Cobourg. Take advantage of this and lets have all Breaker athletes playing every weekend. Athletes are encouraged to consider playing in higher age divisions when possible to increase skill levels. The 20th of July is the Northumberland Breakers Satillite tournament. As part of the program it is important to help support this tournament. Whether that be playing in it as an athlete or helping out the day of and volunteering. More details will be coming shortly via email. Mark July 15th down on your calender. We will have guest coach John Childs coming to Cobourg. John Childs is an Olympic Bronze Medalist and is one of the best players Canadian players. We have four Northumberland Breaker athletes heading to the High Performance Centre this week. The top 40 athletes for Ontario in each gender train together for a week with some of the highest level coaches in Ontario. The High Performance Centre is also the tryout for Team Ontario. Good luck to Brett Whitley, Breanne Scheerhoorn, Blake Scheerhoorn and Steve Wood. Ideally, partners will have good chemistry on or off the court. The truth of the matter is that getting along with your partner off the court is not required. Teams can be successful and not necessarily be best friends off the court. Chemistry on the court, however, is absolutely a key component for any winning partnership in any level of volleyball. The best two person teams can react like they have a single mind which requires a great deal of trust. If the players on a team can’t work as a coordinated unit, it is nearly impossible to do well at the game. Another key to a successful beach volleyball partnership is communication. You and your teammate must be able to communicate with each other and keep your emotions in check throughout the high and low points of a match. Encouraging and motivating your partner will give you and your teammate the mental edge any elite team strives for. Take a second to think about this question: Would you want to be your own partner? Strive to possess all the qualities that you would like your partner to have. Keep playing until the sun “sets”.
