THE PARISH AS ONE BODY
“If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be?
If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended…
The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’
nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’
Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary .
Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “
(1 Cor. 12:17-25)
The Seven EssenƟal Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate,
each nurturing and supporƟng the other with the communal celebraƟon of Sunday Eucharist at the center.

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI
December 20, 2015
God continually visits His people and sets us free! One could conclude that is the truth of the whole bible
and our faith. Do you believe the Lord visits you? How ought we believers live? The experience of God,
and faith demands a moral response - a response in our behavior.
The visitation, today’s Gospel lesson, is a response not only of a good person but a person of faith, a believer.
It’s a call to our conversion. Mary’s journey to visit her relative Elizabeth wasn’t exactly a walk across the
town. It was a journey of love.
If Elizabeth lived in Jerusalem and if Mary lived in Galilee then the trip is about 120 miles. It was a trip
through mountains, full of sectarian hatred. It was a journey of several days. It was most likely summer in
the desert. A pregnant woman made that trip and not by bus, train, plane, or Chevrolet! It was a lot of
walking on Mary’s part. It was a trip of more than kindness; it was the response of the Mother of the Lord.
What would your response have been?
How thoughtful that was….to travel all that distance, pregnant, to help her cousin with the housework for four months, so that middle-aged Elizabeth wouldn't overtire herself and risk losing her child.
My Dad’s oldest sister was married for a short time. The ended marriage was never talked about. She lived with and took care of
my paternal Grandparents in Chicago until they both died - then she moved to Northern California. Her name was Antoinette
(feminine for Anthony), in the family she was Nana (Nānā). In Chicago for nearly fifty years she was the business manager for an
Italian meat-packer, don’t ask no questions! Professionally, she used the name Toni. She was rough, aggressive, in talk. She was a
pessimist and I enjoyed that. If I had a bad day, her day was worse. “You’ve got nothing to complain about….Let me tell you….”
She was also kind, compassionate, and merciful in action. More-or-less she was a spinster. If she heard someone was sick, she
would appear with food and the ability to stay a while. Someone died; she gave care to the widow/widower. New baby, Nānā was
good as gold to give new parents a hand. I guess saints are like that: always available - the people who take Jesus at his word:
"I come not to be served, but to serve" or “love others as I have loved you.” My aunt seemed so plain, negligible - even to herself,
and yet when it counted, she was so important.
Parish, together, let us thank all those who brought food and toys to our parish, thank those who sorted, and thank those who distributed the food and toys to families who would not have had gifts if it weren’t for a team of St. Juliana Catholics. You visited people
and set them free from a great personal worry: “How are we going to celebrate these days?” You do great things - we are proud!
You give birth to joy! Shouldn’t we all do the same?
Yet, ask any one of the volunteers, you’ll get the same reaction: “Ah, shucks, I didn’t do that much.”
Year of Mercy ~ Reflection for December 20, 2015 ~ Fourth Sunday of Advent (Also see page 5 for more info on the Year of Mercy.)
In proclaiming the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples
“go out to every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is
already present in our midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of
herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative.
Since baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of loving service to others in mercy should especially mark our Christmas season this Jubilee Year.

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
Pope Francis has declared that the Universal Catholic Church
will observe a Jubilee Year of Mercy from December 8, 2015,
to November 20, 2016. The pope made the declaration in front
of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. The Holy Door
is usually bricked up, but is
opened during a Jubilee year.
WHAT IS THE JUBILEE
YEAR OF MERCY? Jubilee
years occur about every 25
years - the last occurred in
2000. These holy years are
filled with special celebrations and pilgrimages, strong
calls for conversion and repentance, and the opportunity
to experience God’s grace
through the sacraments, especially confession.
WHAT DOES THE CHURCH TEACH ABOUT MERCY?
Spreading God’s mercy is central to the mission of the Catholic
Church. The Church calls on us to reach out to the broken in
body and spirit through works of mercy as follows:
The Corporal Works of Mercy • Feeding the hungr y •
Sheltering the homeless • Clothing the naked • Visiting
the sick • Ransoming the captive/Visiting the imprisoned • Giving drink to the thirsty • Burying the dead
The Spiritual Works of Mercy • Conver ting sinner s •
Instructing the uninformed • Advising the doubtful •
Comforting the sorrowful • Bearing wrongs patiently •
Forgiving injuries • Praying for the living and dead
This is what the Church enjoins her faithful to do. When she
sends us out into the world, she sends us out as vessels of God’s
mercy. This is how we evangelize. We teach people about the
faith by instructing them in God’s mercy, but also by embodying it.
HOW DO WE PARTICIPATE IN THE JUBILEE? The Year of
Mercy is for all of us. To deliver God’s mercy, we must first seek
to fully experience it ourselves. This can be done by renewing
ourselves through the sacraments, particularly confession. A pilgrimage is also a special way to experience this renewal. Once
we pursue and experience that mercy for ourselves, we reinforce
it for others. This can be done by practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy or by supporting agencies like CRS that
reach out to the poor and outcast. We can also advocate for the
least among us, speaking out within our families, our communities, our Church and our nations—on our own or collectively
through programs like Catholics Confront Global Poverty—so
that God’s mercy will shine brightly in the darkest corners of our
world, within the darkest corners of the human spirit.

THE ONE 1 LIFE LA
A Parish Pilgrimage
SATURDAY, JAN. 23 - NOON - 4:00 PM
Downtown LA
An Event Celebrating the Beauty and Dignity of Human Life.
Last year 15,000 people attended this event. The event will begin at La Placita Olvera at 12:00 pm with a
welcome by Bishop Gomez, then a walk to the City Hall begins at 12:30 pm. It will culminate in a family
friendly picnic with music, entertainment, food trucks, speakers and exhibits. The event is partnering with
organizations that feed the homeless, liberate trafficking victims, find adoptive families for foster children,
provide life-affirming services for pregnant women and accompany the dying through their final days. There
is a poster in the vestibule with more information and a picture from last years event showing the crowd of
15,000 people and a map of the area and information on the speakers for this years event.
Who Do You
Live For?
A small group from St. Juliana did go to this event last year and used the train from the Fullerton Station to go
to this event. We plan to do the same this year. We will have a sign-up sheet in the vestibule starting the
beginning of January. Call Barbara Legas at 714-870-4214 or John Hranek at 714-768-0162 who will be coordinating our participation. Let's have a large group this year.
The Advent wreath is made up of two parts—the round wreath (evergreen, symbolizing growth and everlasting
life) and the candles (three purple and one pink - representing the four weeks in preparation before the coming
of our Lord).
Every week of Advent one candle is lit. The four candles, representing hope, love, joy (pink candle) and peace.
As each new candle is lit during the journey of Advent, we draw closer to the coming of our Lord and are reminded of
Christ’s presence through the light of the candles burning.

BULLETIN SPOTLIGHT
Our newest Bulletin Advertiser is Hearts in Home Senior Care Providers and Bryant Ranch Guest
Manors. Hearts in Home Senior Care Providers is located at 27850 Mount Shasta Way in
Yorba Linda and Bryant Ranch Guest Manors is located at 4451 Southern Pointe Lane in Yorba
Linda. Their office phone number is 714.692.3453 and the cell number is 714.394.2309. Their
email address is [email protected]. Their website addresses are www.heartsin
home.com and www.bryantranchmanors.com. They are open 24 hours a day seven days a week.
The owner of the businesses is Shirley Espique and the manager is Edwin Cinco. They have been
in business for over 13 years.
Mrs. Espique started her business after her father developed Alzheimer’s disease and she had a
hard time finding good caregivers to come to her home. Shirley also could not find a decent place
to put him in that was close to where she lives. After struggling with in home caregivers who are not experienced in Alzheimer’s
care, she decided to open a board and care, called residential care for the elderly. She opened six facilities in three years and elders
who need help 24 hours a day can come and stay with them. Each facility is licensed to take care of six people, 62 years of age and
older. Their facilities are in Fullerton and Yorba Linda. Due to a demand for in home care for seniors who need help but want to
remain in the comfort of their homes, she also started sending caregivers directly to the senior’s homes. Their caregivers provide
care, companionship, light housekeeping, and more. They do not provide medical care.
Their facilities are called Bryant Ranch Guest Manors and Avalon Guest Manors. The in-care services are called Hearts in Home
Senior Care Providers. Currently they have a number of positions available including caregivers and companions, both full time and
part time. There are marketing, office, and computer positions also available. Hearts in Home and Bryant Ranch Guest Manors appreciate the opportunity to support our church bulletin and would like to be a part of our Ministry Fair and Business Expo in the fall
of 2016.
LEGACY COURTYARD PAVERS
The Third Phase of the Legacy Courtyard Paver in front of the
Parish Center is underway. A legacy paver (brick) is a great
way to remember or honor someone.
The deadline for the second phase is December 31st.
Installation of the second phase of courtyard is
scheduled for late January.
Look for order forms in the church foyer, church office,
and the parish website.
HOLY HOUR OF REPARATION
Join Father Sy Nguyen every Thursday at the Hour of Great Mercy 3:00 p.m. starting January 7, 2016 in offering prayers of reparation for ourselves, for our nation, and for the whole world.
“Please ... if you are honestly concerned about making Christ
known to literally every creature - give God one hour a day. You
are needed in God's prayer-force to prepare for work in the totally unevangelized areas of the world. Do you love them enough to
pray? Will you 'pay the price' of spiritual battle for one hour daily? Christ asked: 'What, could you not watch with Me one
hour?'”- Jack McAllister’s pamphlet copy to Venerable Fulton J.
Sheen; “That the necessity of EXPIATION or REPARATION is
especially urgent today must be evident to everyone who considers the present plight of the world, ‘seated in wickedness’ (John,
v.9)…” – Pope Pius XI-Encyclical ‘Miserentissimus’ ADDRESS: Saint Martin de Porres Church, 19767 Yorba Linda

GIVING “ON-LINE”
In the world we live in, few of us carry cash or have our checkbooks handy - we use electronic forms of paying for many
things. Have you ever considered donating to the Church electronically? Simply go to the parish website at
www.stjulianachurch.org and click the blue box titled ONLINE GIVING, the process is easy to follow. Register and begin
on-line giving today! It’s a lot easier than remembering your
checkbook. Consider end-of year tax deductions and charitable
giving as the 2015 year comes to a close. We are most gracious
for your generosity.
