Community engagement empowers us, thereby making us a stronger organization. The stronger we are, the more opportunities we can provide for our Central Alberta communities. Once again we fostered our brand identity, “Your Destination for Celebration.” Truly, we are Central Alberta’s premier event destination. We continue to listen in order to satisfy guests. High attendance at our ever-popular Westerner Days Fair & Exposition is proof that we’re able to offer guests the entertainment they want, thanks to the great people behind the projects. Our numbers tell a story, with 1.5 million visitors through our doors. Our tireless volunteers and staff members are another spoke in the Westerner Park wheel that help us roll out our blend of western tradition with cutting-edge technology. From staying smart and connected through a Shaw Go WiFi partnership, to booking premium entertainment and events, we keep our community connection strong. Together, we can create better communities. We keep building on those opportunities: In 2013, along with our municipal and government partners, we expanded the ENMAX Centrium. This year, we enhanced our facilities by opening Harvest Gardens, a new seasonal outdoor wedding and event venue. Community building is one of our proudest accomplishments in 2014. This was made possible by the all-important support from sponsors and partners who believe in the value of Westerner Park. We are grateful to have you on the team. Together, we can create better communities. We value the deep roots we’ve planted; thanks to our staff, volunteers, patrons, partners, and sponsors, all of them important to the foundation of our organization. 2 Message from the President We’re a strong community and the momentum keeps growing as we take positive steps. I look forward to sharing our community building success in the 2014 Annual Report. Last year we shone the spotlight on our staff and volunteers, all of them dedicated and instrumental to our strength. This year we want to acknowledge our collaborative partners and sponsors. They keep finding new and exciting ways to innovate, and support Westerner Park. The same commitment shines throughout the Central Alberta communities. For years, our partners and sponsors have maximized their visibility and connected to the community in meaningful ways through Westerner Park. For this reason we direct our focus on longterm partnerships and local involvement. New and impressive partnerships include Shaw Communications and Holiday Inn. Partner support ensures that we attract and offer premium events, such as Agri-Trade Equipment Expo and Red Deer Rebels hockey, to name a couple. To meet the changing needs of our community, we evolve as we look for innovative partnerships in the region. As you will discover in this report, we experienced another year of accomplishments with firstrate events, exhibitions and entertainment. Many events are highly anticipated each year, such as Westerner Days Fair & Exposition and the Westerner Championship Dairy Showcase. Other steps forward include a new outdoor venue – Harvest Gardens is one more way we bring unique benefits to the region. 3 Our high energy endures, and with such a powerful team to support our journey, we have ambitious plans for the coming years. Proudly, we are living our brand “Your Destination for Celebration.” I’d also like to thank our dedicated and forward thinking Board of Directors for their notable efforts and vision. Their unified vision advances our Strategic Development Plan’s future developments. At Westerner Park, we endeavor to build a strong community, one that provides advantages and business opportunities for Central Albertans, young and old, urban and rural alike. We can’t do this without support from our partners and sponsors, and we will continue to map our community’s assets and keep building bridges. We are strong and we strive to engage our community through Westerner Park. We are ‘Westerners’! I feel honored to be a part of Westerner Park and to work with a group of outstanding people who support this remarkable organization. Kent Olson President Message from the Acting Chief Executive Officer The contributions that Westerner Park makes to the local economy adds strength and value to Red Deer and our Central Alberta region. Our partners and sponsors help guide our organization and continued to show their great support in 2014. The significant partnerships we build offer new ways of meeting our community needs. I also want to thank our guests – our all-important fans – who cheer at sporting events and applaud for our entertainers. The diverse activities we offered in 2014 were for you and about you. We celebrate you! We reflected our gratitude in the Westerner Days Fair & Exposition theme – My Westerner Days. We always encourage feedback and work hard to stay in tune with our community expectations. At Westerner Park, we take our responsibility seriously when it comes to creating positive experiences for our guests and positive influences on our city. I am proud to share in the success we achieved in 2014. Westerner Park and all that we offer brings us together; From our staff, volunteers and shareholders to our partners and sponsors. Thank you for inspiring us and demonstrating your commitment to the community! There is much potential for the future and we want to be an important part of the growth opportunities in Central Alberta and beyond. The strength of our community is increased through events and activities that allow people to feel camaraderie, discovery and renewal. Through Westerner Park, we are proud to build lasting relationships, for today and tomorrow as your destination for celebration. Jim White Acting Chief Executive Officer and General Manager I would like to personally thank the Board for their direction and support and our management and staff for their continued hard work. 4 Projects that Matter Harvest Gardens Sets the Stage Westerner Park is proud to present another distinguishing feature – Harvest Gardens. This unique seasonal outdoor venue is ideal for weddings, family gatherings, corporate functions, BBQs and those special photographs. Wedding receptions benefit from our adjoining Harvest Centre, creating a memorable experience and a competitive advantage for Central Alberta. Harvest Gardens features a verdant garden setting with ceremony-style seating for up to 200. A screened entrance and privacy fence provide the ultimate in peace of mind. We’re keeping it “green” and high-tech with solar powered energy and wireless internet. At Westerner Park, we continue to look for initiatives to invest in and cultivate the evolving needs of our community. The Harvest Centre offers the Marquis and Heartland Rooms, two upscale multi-purpose banquet halls that are ideal for a variety of events. Designed for flexibility, the building can host a wedding one week and a convention or trade show the next! 5 Now staying connected to all the action is only a click away! Westerner Park formed a 10 year partnership with Shaw Communications at the end of 2013. The Shaw Go WiFi network gives Shaw customers who visit Westerner Park the chance to stay connected – for free – during all the events held in our facilities. Staying connected. Traditional West Goes Hi-Tech Not a Shaw customer? Visitors were provided guest access to the Westerner Park network while they enjoyed Westerner Days Fair & Exposition, with convenient and easy access to the internet. One more way we kept our community connected. The Shaw Go WiFi network gives Shaw customers who visit Westerner Park the opportunity to stay connected during all the events held in our facilities. Shaw customers remain continuously connected to Shaw Go WiFi while within range of the network. 6 Spotlight on Western Hospitality We might be a large and busy place, but we stay true to our down-home heritage by delivering western hospitality. This year was no different – we focused on strengthening our community connections. We hope you enjoyed these events as much as we enjoyed hosting them. All-Season Highpoints: The Canadian Supreme The Canadian Supreme marked its 30th consecutive year at Westerner Park. Held in the Prairie Pavilion and the UFA Agricentre, this prominent event is the largest cutting, reining and working cow horse event in the Pacific Northwest. Truly supreme for Red Deer. 7 Red Deer Motors North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships Tarp Auction Businesses hitched their company names and logos to 56 wagons during the annual Westerner Days Fair & Exposition. A total of $161,000 was raised for the Pony Chuckwagon drivers and prize purse. Agri-Trade Equipment Expo Agri-Trade keeps our invaluable farm community connected year after year, with its wide variety of farm technology exhibits. Our human desire to be together is embedded in our nature. Events, festivals and entertaining activities are key opportunities for community mingling and celebration. At Westerner Park, we welcome support from our community and our partners to continue generating benefits for Central Albertans. The Mane Event Canadian exhibitors and their cattle attended the Westerner Championship Dairy Showcase – educational tours, exhibitor displays and the Mega Moola Jackpot appealed to guests from near and far. A new partnership, another first in Alberta: This year the Westerner Championship Dairy Showcase Committee adopted a new Holstein Canada Show Ring Audit Program, to provide the utmost in animal care. The Mane Event brought equine information and excitement to the urban community. This year our guests were treated to new vendors, exhibits and informative clinics. There was something for all equine enthusiasts, from competitors to horse lovers. The monitoring program ensures the Dairy Showcase will play a lead role in animal care responsibility. As an agricultural organization, we want to emphasize the importance of animal care, whether in the show ring or at home in the barn. The Westerner Championship Dairy Showcase first began in 1954 and continues to be a valuable part of Westerner Park’s agricultural history. Down-home heritage Westerner Championship Dairy Showcase 8 9 The Westerner Days Fair & Exposition draws over 90,000 visitors and generates over $7 million in gross economic impact for Central Alberta. Through partnerships, we come together to share expertise and bring new ideas forward that deliver greater value to our citizens. – through weddings and banquets to hockey games and agricultural shows. We are pleased to support our local community wherever we can and proud to partner with organizations with the same intent: to improve opportunities for Central Albertans. Our partners and sponsors understand their key priorities, and also know that aligning themselves with like-minded organizations can help them achieve their vision. We are proud to play a part in that alignment. We don’t stop there: While proudly anchored to our past, we believe in “green” today – trees, gardens and shared green spaces, where our designs and maintenance create sustainable environments for all to enjoy. Our green mindset includes managing our energy and waste consumption to decrease environmental impact. Since 1891, Westerner Park has been a place for Central Albertans to gather and celebrate their community events. We continue to be there as people share their most memorable moments We are Westerners. We know we’re hard-working, with dedicated staff and volunteers as our backbone. We also know that we wouldn’t be where we are today without support from our partners and sponsors. Proud, Welcoming, Practical, Service-Oriented. Westerner Park’s “can-do” spirit resulted in a satisfying “done and dusted” in 2014. We invite you to join us in 2015 as we entertain, employ and embrace celebration! 24 4847A 19 Street, Red Deer, AB T4R 2N7 P 403.343.7800 F 403.341.4699 westernerpark.ca
