Ben’s Message: One of my picnic highlights was visiting the kids’ tables, youth that attended VBS together were eating all at one table, a great sign of success of the program. I looked at their plates, all desserts: pie, cookies, candy bars and no adults nearby. Pure heaven and they were happy! This is an important Sunday as we begin our Catechesis or Faith Formation Year. We begin by commissioning and blessing the Catechists, who have such an important role in forming our youth. We have many non-practicing Catholics because the Church failed in this important role. Education is important but people who practice and share their faith help in this process. Encourage our youth, let them know that you are praying for them. My vocation was encouraged by a holy man who I often saw at St. Rita’s in Portland doing good things at Church. He asked if I was willing to help teach Religious Education. As an unemployed, recent college graduate, I said yes. During that year I began to seriously research and contemplate my call to priesthood. We moved away from St. Rita’s to St. Anthony in Tigard, just before my Ordination my mother was at a CDA event at The Grotto and saw the man who asked, “Lorraine what ever happened to your son Ben?” She informed him of my upcoming Ordination and first Mass. He smiled, “I have cancer and I am dying. All my years as a catechist, I always prayed that one of my boys would be priest and soon one will.” He died between my Ordination and first Mass in Oregon. Pray for our catechesis! Fr. Admission into heaven is something money cannot buy. The only currency that has any value to secure our entrance is that of love. When you donate to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering. Hours: Tuesdays 1 - 3 pm, Fridays & Saturdays 10 am - 12 Noon SVDP is an equal opportunity provider Animal Blessing: First Announcement On October 2rd at 3 p.m. we will have a blessing of animals. Do you have a famous family chowder recipe that you’d like to share with the rest of the Parish? Clam, salmon, corn, it doesn’t matter; we want you to bring it to the Star of the Sea Chowder Challenge on October 22nd and see how it stacks up against the competition. "Prayer: The Faith Prayed" This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 18, 2016 and will focus on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. St. Mary Vestibule Bulletin Board ~ Thank you ~ Thank you to all who acknowledge my aging process this past week. Fr. Ben You will notice the changes in our Vestibule Bulletin Board, pictures will be going up as well as notes from previous committees meetings, the Ministry Schedule, and the Gift Bearer Calendar is still there.
