ST. THOMAS MORE CHURCH HOUSTON, TEXAS APRIL 24, 2011 Pastor’s Chronicle Gathering in this sacred space on Easter Sunday we find ourselves almost where we began 40 days ago in a garden. On Ash Wednesday, we heard the lament of the tragic story of the fall of Adam and Eve: "Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return." The sin of Adam and Eve exiled them from the Garden of Eden. That wonderful place, so full of creatures great and small springing from God's playful imagination became the place of the greatest defeat for God's greatest creatures: man and woman. When they were forced to leave their garden-home behind, they took with them a sad souvenir: sin leading to death, the fate that all their descendents share. Yet on this most holy day, we, Adam and Eve's descendents, spiritually enter another garden: the garden of Jesus' empty tomb. That wonderful place, so full of the glory of God's new creation, is where God's new creatures find their greatest triumph. In the risen Christ, we find that the death of sin leads to everlasting life. To enter this garden of the empty tomb, we had first to enter the desert with Christ for 40 days; through prayer, fasting, and works of charity, we have relearned what it means to die to our own selfishness and what it means to live for God and one another. Our observance of Lent is really the yearly journey from the Garden of Eden to the Garden of the Empty Tomb. In this garden we make some astonishing discoveries: that the great deeds of creation (when God brought order out of the darkness and chaos) pales in comparison with God's deed of redemption; that God's power is stronger than the power of evil. This is why at the Easter Vigil we baptized into the death and resurrection of Christ 10 new members witnessing to the living water of salvation gushing forth to satisfy all who are thirsting for God. Such is the garden we are welcomed to this day teeming with hope, life, and peace. At the Easter Vigil the great hymn known as the Exsultet is sung in which the church dares to call the sin of Adam and Eve a "happy fault" (O felix culpa) because their sin results in everlasting peace restored between God and us in so great a redeemer as Jesus Christ, as the hymn says "A night, in which heaven is united to earth, and God to man." "Peace" is the first word Jesus speaks to the women who discover his empty tomb on Easter morning. His message of peace is one of life for all creation: women, men, young and old, the unborn, the dying, and all those who have died, rich and poor, sinners and saints, in fact for "people of race, language, and way of life." How wonder-full is the Garden of the Empty Tomb! Fr. Bill Deacon Jude Ezuma, a parishioner of St. Thomas More, will be ordained to the priesthood Saturday, June 4, at 10:00 a.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart by Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of GalvestonHouston. Fr.
