Joe’s captured the top professional award for “Birmingham’s Best Gumbo” at Episcopal Place’s sixth annual
Gumbo Gala on May 7 in
Caldwell Park.
Jubilee Joe’s edged out
three-time winner Crazy Cajun’s, which this year received
the award for best seafood
gumbo. Gumbo cooking
teams from Episcopal parishes swept the awards in the
Backyard Chefs Division, with
All Saints’ Wednesday Morning Sinners, sponsored by
Robbie D. Wood, winning first
place, as well as the trophy
for “Most Divine Gumbo”
among Episcopal organizations.
About 1,300 people attend
the event, which raised

EP UPDATE by Tim Blanton, Executive Director

At the time of this writing, the news is filled with stories
of the aftermath of the Joplin, MO, tornado while Alabama is still reeling from our own tornados that struck
four weeks ago. In Alabama, tornados are a fact of life
but that does not make them any less destructive or painful. Our peak tornado season is March through May but
they can occur anytime. A tornado watch means tornados are possible.
You should stay alert and aware of the weather conditions. A tornado
warning means a tornado has been sighted and you should take shelter
immediately. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) suggests the following:
·
Go to the lowest level of the building that does not have glass
·
Go to the center of interior rooms
·
Stay away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls
·
Get under a sturdy table or other furniture
Do not open windows
If you choose to remain in
your apartment, the bathroom may be the safest
place. The adjacent FEMA
map indicates that Birmingham is in the ‘highest” risk
area in the United States.

live on restricted incomes. Services such as van transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, banks, and shopping centers, resident
activities, subsidized noon meals and housekeeping, health screenings,
and worship and pastoral care help residents live independently and for
as long as possible in Episcopal Place’s affordable housing community.
“This event was started five years ago in honor of several residents
who came to live at Episcopal Place after surviving Hurricane Katrina in
New Orleans,” said Tim Blanton, executive director of Episcopal Place.
“Thanks to great support from the community, Gumbo Gala has grown
into a lively event with great gumbo and entertainment, and all proceeds go to support a worthwhile cause.”
