THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
Today’s celebration of Corpus Christi is a reminder for us of the immense and stunning gift we receive in the
Eucharist. Jesus left us a memorial that would not fade with time or lose its value with the passage of the ages. In
the Eucharist, the gift is the giver. Jesus gives us Himself. Sometimes people get into mental twists about what it
means to eat flesh and drink blood. It sounds repulsive and understandably so. But in the self-giving sacrifice of the
crucifixion, Jesus died that we might live. In the Eucharist, Jesus again gives us Himself. He does not die again but He
does sacrifice Himself for us. Anyone receiving Communion should approach with an overwhelming sense of humility
and blessedness.
This may sound heretical to some but I occasionally have my doubts about giving children in second grade Holy
Communion. I sometimes fear that for the children it is an exercise they simply don’t understand and for some
parents, it is reduced to a blue suit or a white dress. It is all too “cute.” On the other hand, the children often
demonstrate the wonder that is so lacking for some of us adults. In the Polish community, for instance, receiving Holy
Communion is usually tied to a recent visit to Confession. Many will not walk up the Communion line without it. Many
Americans are rather cavalier and feel a “right” to receive Communion just because they found their way into church.
I think both communities would do well to find a more moderate view. The truth is no one is “worthy” to receive
Communion. It is total gift from God. At the same time, Confession gives us the chance to prepare ourselves that
makes us more open to the grace upon grace that comes in the Body and Blood of Christ.
CLASS OF 2015
Today we graduate the Saint Pascal School Class of 2015. All of us congratulate these young people and their families
for their hard work and effort to reach this moment in their lives. The lessons of faith, hard work, integrity and justice
are what they have learned here. Their families have made real sacrifices to send them to Saint Pascal. It is a gift that
will continue to give through their children for many years to come. I also congratulate our principal, Ms. Akana and our
teachers and staff who give so generously to all our students. We can all be proud of the Class of 2015!
JOE BIDEN’S SORROW
Last week, Vice President Joe Biden suffered another body blow when his 46 year old son, Beau, died of a brain tumor.
Many years ago, he had lost his wife and daughter in a terrible car accident that nearly killed both his sons, too. Joe
Biden sometimes comes across less than Vice-Presidential. He is sometimes photographed with silly faces or an
impossibly white smile. He sometimes makes silly statements. But he is always seen as optimistic and upbeat.
I recently read about a speech he made reflecting on the power of grief. He said it can take away your will to live and
rob you of a sense of purpose. He found his purpose though, in his two sons. He would travel back and forth from
Washington, D.C., to Wilmington, Delaware every night to be with his sons. Upon reflection, he said that he came to
realize that they didn’t need his daily trip nearly as much as he needed them. They gave him his focus and his reason
to live.
Several times my father told me that after my mother died, he would have been just as glad to end his own life. But the
only things that kept him going was us four kids and his faith. In a twitter feed, the columnist Michael Grunwald of
POLITICO.com wrote: When you think of what Joe Biden's endured and what he's like, he seems to get something right
about life that most of us don't.
Joe Biden is a committed Catholic (in spite of some of his political stands). I think he and my father would have had a
lot to talk about had they been given the chance. I think what Grunwald sees in Biden’s pain, his upbeat personality
and his ability to go on is that what Biden gets right about life is his faith. The Vice President sees life through the lens
of faith and that gives him the courage to go on.
All of us know people like Biden. I have my father, you probably have your example. Or maybe you are an example of
enduring faith to others. Maybe you’re one of those people who also “get it right.”

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS - JOIN THE FUN
The Knights of Columbus Tonti Council #1567 is looking
for vendors, crafters and artists interested in securing a
spot for the 19th Annual Portage Park Community Fair
(formerly Art in the Park), Sept. 19-20, 2015 at Portage
Park. For more information call 773-575-4171 or visit
either [email protected] or www.kofc1567.com.
We celebrate Father’s Day during June. Many fathers feel
a deep loss and sadness due to the abortion of their child.
At The Women’s Center, we reduce the number of
abortions by approximately 1,000 babies saved each year.
We are able to do this because of the counseling, and
spiritual and material help which you enable us to provide
our mothers and fathers.
Have you felt God calling you to serve in the pro-life
mission field? The Women’s Center is looking for new
volunteers Monday-Friday, between 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, at
our Cicero Ave. location. We especially need volunteers to
greet clients in our lobby on Thursday 1-4pm and Friday
9am-4pm. We would love to find a retired man who is
handy and able to lift up to 40 pounds to distribute baby
furniture on Wednesday or Thursday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM.
We also have an excellent opportunity for one to four
people (individuals or friends) to work together prepping
baby bottles for our “spare change campaign”, any day,
Monday through Friday, between 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. If you
have questions about these areas and are interested in
volunteering, please contact Paige at 773-794-8807 or
[email protected].
We need 2 walkers, 2 toddler beds, 4 strollers, 1 double
stroller, 8 pack n plays, 3 swings, 2 bassinets and 6 infant
car seat/carriers. It will be a great help if you can deliver
these to us. For our address, or if a pick-up by a volunteer
is needed, please call 773-794-1313. The families who
receive these things are grateful for your generosity. We
can use maternity clothes, size 6 diapers and crib sheets.
These things must be delivered to us unless accompanied
by baby furniture.

Jesus’ identity as the suffering servant
who obtained redemption for us “with
His own blood” is truly the same as His
mission – to give of Himself without
counting the cost, even if its cost is His
very body and blood. What is our
mission then as disciples of Jesus?
The answer is simple. We are to give
ourselves to God and everyone God
loves. We know the answer is simple,
but the daily living of that mission is not. All we have to do
is look at how many times we fail. We get tired of listening
to family members complain about their lives. Co-workers
repeatedly ask our help for a job they should be able to
handle, and we ignore them. We have
helped out a friend so many times we
refuse his latest request. Yet this day
reminds us that Jesus gives us Himself in
the Eucharist, and He will strengthen us to
be more self giving, more like Him.
Pope Francis Tweet
Christians are witnesses
not to a theory, but to a Person:
Christ risen and alive, the one
Savior of all.
THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
CORPUS CHRISTI
In some ways every Sunday is a
feast of the Eucharist, because by
participating in the Mass, and in
receiving Communion, we are honoring and celebrating the
Eucharist. Nonetheless, a desire
to specifically celebrate the
Eucharist developed. The feast of
Corpus Christi owes a rather large
debt to Saint Juliana, a nun of Liege, Belgium, who was
led to start a celebration of the Mass around AD 1230. At
an early age, she developed a strong devotion to the
Blessed Sacrament, and she longed for a feast in honor
of the Eucharist. In AD 1264, a bull of Pope Urban IV commanded universal observance of the feast. Nonetheless,
Urban's death impeded the spread of the feast. However,
by the 14th Century, the feast became universally celebrated in the West.
Saint Thomas Aquinas is given credit for many of the customs and hymns associated with Corpus Christi. Scholars
have questioned this. However, the hymns and prayers
certainly are in the tradition of Aquinas, and many defend
the traditional ascription based on internal evidence. The
Feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated throughout the
Catholic Church. Although the feast is not officially observed in most Protestant churches, some Anglican
churches, especially Anglo-Catholics, observe the feast.
www.churchyear.net
The word “thanksgiving” most often calls to our mind the
holiday in November. But as early as the middle of the
second century Justin Martyr referred to the blessed
bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper as “food we call
‘thanksgiving’ ” (in Greek eucharistia). The Thanksgiving
we celebrate in the autumn is at times marked by a sort
of proud societal self‑congratulation and the consumption of food until we sink into an inert stupor. The
“thanksgiving” that we call our Eucharist is just the opposite: we are led to it by an acknowledgment of our own
failings; we remember our humble place in the scheme of
things by giving praise to God alone.
While the food of Christ’s body and blood fills our spiritual
hungers, it also creates in us a greater hunger. We are
not sent to our spiritual sofas to let the Lord’s Supper settle; we are sent to be living signs of that thanksgiving for
the world by looking out for the poor and powerless, feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, speaking out against
the self‑righteous. In short, the hunger created by our
doing in remembrance of Christ must lead us to living in
remembrance of him.

June is the Month of the
Sacred Heart
This month, the Church celebrates the feasts of Corpus
Christi (June 7) and the
Solemnity of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus (June 12). This
devotion celebrates Christ's
living and loving heart; his
Divine heart.
Prayer of the faithful:
The Universal Prayer
With trust in God who sent God’s
Son to save and deliver us into the
fullness of life in God, we make
known our needs in prayer.

THANKSGIVING
— JUNE 7, 2015
That the church may be a witness
of the salvation and healing of Christ’s sacrifice,
Lord, hear our prayer.
That all the shedding of blood brought on through
violence may cease and that the world may know
peace, we pray, Lord, hear our prayer.
That all who seek forgiveness find clear consciences
in the forgiveness Christ offers, Lord, hear our
prayer.
In this Year of Consecrated Life, we pray that a new
generation of young men and women will find the
courage to swim against the tide and consecrate their
lives to God. Lord, hear our prayer.
COME TO THE QUIET
Each Thursday from 9:00 AM to
6:30 PM, Saint Pascal hosts the
place for quiet reflection—
Eucharistic Adoration in Church.
The purpose of Eucharistic
Adoration is to give every Catholic
(and others) an opportunity to
spend time in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord
present in the Blessed Sacrament.
Everyone is welcome and invited to spend some time on
Thursdays for 5 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour or more if
so desired. It calms one’s soul, brings peace to one’s
heart and deepens one’s relationship with the Lord.
Making time with Jesus may be the gift you can give
yourself.

Stewardship Reflection
“Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to
them and they all drank from it.” - MARK 14:23
Jesus, the perfect steward, gave thanks, just before
He gave Himself to us completely for our salvation.
He offers us the chance to drink from His cup. In the
Eucharist, we meet Christ personally and, if we listen
to Him, we know what drinking from His cup means
for each of us. Often, it means our own sacrifice –
giving up some of our time, talent and treasure to do
His work on earth.

We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the
most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these
celebrations with men and women who, in some way, are part of our
community. Therefore, please note the following:
INFANT BAPTISMS: Registration in the parish is a prerequisite.
Parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal Preparation Session
at least two months prior to the baptism. Meetings are held on the
first Monday evening of each month (except for holidays). Baptisms
are generally held on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 PM
based on the liturgical calendar. (There are no Baptisms during
Lent.). Stop by the parish office to make arrangements.
RECONCILIATION: Every Saturday, 9 AM
SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: St. Pascal requires either the bride,
the groom, or the parent of either be registered and active as a parishioner for at least 6 months before contacting us to make any
arrangements. Allow at least 6 months to complete wedding arrangements. Attendance at a music-planning workshop for the wedding
Mass/ceremony is required; these are scheduled twice a year.
SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: Anytime a person is facing a serious illness, surgery or hospitalization, it is proper to receive the Sacrament
of the Sick. Please contact a priest.
MINISTRY OF CARE – HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS: Please call the
parish office to arrange for Communion visitation.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Our Family Centered Catechesis Program is
for families with children in grades K-8. Sessions meet once a month
from September to May on either Monday evenings or Saturday
mornings. In order for a child to receive the Sacraments, she/he
must be enrolled in the program one year prior to the sacramental
"prep" year.
