History of Symbiosis
Symbiosis 1971 – Passion and Excellence
The journey of thousand miles begins with a single step. But it is that involves deliberation and
much hesitation. The Symbiosis journey however began with a surge of enthusiasm support on by an
incident that in itself, makes poignant tale It is an inspiring tale and in the words of Padma Bhushan Dr. S.
B. Mujumdar , the founder of Symbiosis, it says:
It was afternoon on a hot day. I was standing near a window of my house overlooking the rst hostel
block, of which I was the rector. A strange thing happened a girl walked up to the window of the boys hostel
room. Quickly handed over something and disappeared My curiosity was aroused and I kept watching the
girl walking up to the window day after day and suspected , like my other rector would ,that an affair was
afoot So one day I made up my mind and walked up to the door and knocked When the door opened, I saw a
Mauritian student lying on the bed. His face was pale and his eyes seemed to have sunken low. I was
puzzled! When I turned to the boy for explanation, he said, sir, I have an attack of jaundice and I am feeling
extremely weak. I cannot stand up, nor walk a few steps. A girl from my country brings me food. However,
since ladies are not allowed to enter the boy's hostel, she hands over the lunch box through window.
I was stunned, after all, it wasn't a type of 'affair' I had expected. I was very much pained and decided
something had to be done about this. “that was instance! A golden moment! “Symbiosis was born”.
Symbiosis is term in science, meaning 'living together of two different organisms for the benet of
each other. Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, himself a Professor of Botany. Through this name apt for the institution.
Thus the institution was founded to alleviate the problems faced by foreign students coming to India.
At the time these problems included- accommodation, meals, medical care, guidance, coaching,
information about the city etc.
Symbiosis has come a long way since then. Today it is a home to students from more than 75
different countries. These students are offered the best learning resources, industry exposure, a strong
international alumni network, a global recognition and above all, a truly enriching India experience.

Law Hawks Forum
Critical Thinking – Redened
A forum to aid the metamorphosis of students into “legal eagles” possessing legal erudition and
critical thought, conforming to the global benchmark in the eld of legal studies and implant seeds of
critical thinking in the minds of students, catering to the needs of the current cutting-edge competition in
the professional legal scenario.
Law Hawks Forum to act as an uninhibited forum for literati to coalesce in an atmosphere conducive
to the literary growth of law students and to equip them to enjoy their legal education by merger of
psychology with the study of law.
It all happened when two young law students entered Symbiosis Law School only to realize being
part of a cell or committee was the “the rst big thing to happen in a law school”. However there was a
lacuna in appreciation of literature and critical analysis of judgments. And thus the revolutionary, LAW
HAWKS FORUM – an open platform to interact, research and learn.
Three years down the line and Law Hawks Forum is actively organizing debates, legal research
sessions, promoting the need to read literature and inculcate the art of reviewing; to host discussion and
deliberation sessions for the students. Over the last academic year, Law hawks forum has actively
