Fortune 500 Places Midea above the
Competition
By Kevin McGeary
T
he Fortune list of China‘s 500 biggest companies has placed Midea in 32nd place, up three places
from last year and higher than any other appliances
manufacturer. Gree was in 34th place, TCL in 55th and
Haier in 66th on the list that was published at the beginning of July.
This is the latest major international media to
publish encouraging news about Midea Group‘s breakneck growth. The group has come from benig worth
US$1 million in 1990 to US$23 billion last year.
The top three remained unchanged. Sinopec was
in first place, with revenue of US$ 451 billion. PetroChina was in second place and China State Construction Engineering was in third.
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC)
was highest in terms of profit with US$44.4 billion,
even higher than Apple, America‘s most profitable
company.
The total revenue of the 500 companies amounts
to about US$4.9 trillion, a 5% increase compared to last
year. The companies account for nearly half of China‘s
GDP.
Midea Group leapfrogged its competitors into 32nd place.
Fortune's report said companies in the Internet
industry are rising at the fastest pace. The revenue growth
rate of listed online enterprises is on average nearly 40 percompanies.
cent, higher than the average 5 percent growth of all listed
Among the 53 new entrants on the list this
year, commercial property developer Dalian Wanda Group Holdings Ltd was
ranked 51. Alibaba Group, also making its
first appearance on the list, was 81st, 26
places behind its competitor JD.com.
China International Capital Corporation
Ltd, which assisted Fortune in compiling
the list, said the rankings proved that despite a slowdown in economic growth,
emerging industries such as Internetrelated service providers and the pharmaceutical sector are expanding quickly.

M
idea is set to make a splash in the world‗s largest
country and it began doing so with the help of the one organization that knows how. FINA, the world water sports governing
body, joined Midea at a press conference in Moscow on July 16
in which the brand was formally launched in Russia.
On the eve of the 16th FINA Championship Games in the
historical Russian city of Kazan, Alexey Obukhov, General
Manager of Midea Russia, outlined his plans for at the luxurious
Lotte Hotel in central Moscow. Other speakers included Midea
HQ‘s Manager of PR and Digital Marketing, Matthew Smith,
FINA‘s Executive Director, Cornel Marculescu, and the multiple Olympic medal-winning Russian diver, Gleb Galperin.
The theme of the event was chosen to highlight the powerful nature of each of the parties involved: Midea, as one of the
world‘s largest producers of home appliances, and their global
partner, FINA, as the world‘s one and only organizing authority
for aquatic sports, both coming together in a country with a
hugely fertile market.
Before the beginning of the press conference, reporters
from over 30 news organizations and a handful of VIP dealers
mingled, with many taking notice of the large ―presswall‖ outside of the venue entrance, depicting a muscular swimmer
breaching the surface of the water, looking like a Greek God
and spanning the shape of Russia‘s geographic border.
The first of the speakers, Matthew Smith, Midea HQ‘s PR
and Digital Marketing Manager, gave an introduction to the
company, describing its status as a major household name in
China and its recent but rapid growth in other major markets
such as Brazil, India, and the United States.
Speaking next, Cornel Marculescu, the Executive Director
of FINA,
mentioned
about
FINA‘s
relationship with
Midea,
describing
the natural
fit for the
partnership, which began in 2011, and was renewed last year.
Mr. Marculescu was followed by Gleb Galperin, a Russian medalist in diving from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, who described
his experience as an athlete and the great progress that FINA
has made in promoting this sport across the world.
Alexey Obukhov, then made a presentation illustrating
Midea‘s operational footprint in the world and the wide-ranging
global product portfolio, before describing Midea‘s local initial
post-launch product offering. During the question and answer
period, there were queries from the media about Midea‘s future
plans in Russia, which were described by Mr. Obukhov as small
to start with plans to expand into additional product categories,
shown to the media during his presentation.
By the end of the press conference, everyone from Midea,
FINA, and the news media gathered together in front of the
presswall for a final group photo, before a lunch outside the
venue where everyone mingled about with renewed conversation about the event.

Japanese Expert Looks to Rugby for Wisdom

sponsibility is complicated. It is important to always remember
how our jobs relate to each other and to take advantage of our
strength in numbers. In this sense, the game of rugby has a lot
of wisdom to offer," said Miyaguchi, citing a sport in which
Japan will be World Cup host in 2019.
"Unlike in similar sports such as American
football, players are not allowed to pass the
ball forward, therefore their teammates must
stay behind the ball, always be aware of what
is going on in front of them, be prepared to
receive a pass and carry the ball toward the
destination. A good player will trust their
teammates to be there and know when to
make use of them," said Miyaguchi, drawing a
comparison between the sport and his own
job in the Small Appliances Division.
Other life lessons that rugby is said to contain include: be
patient, opportunities will come; play with passion; the real
world comes without padding; and true accomplishment does
not require mass hysteria for validation.
iyaguchi Junichi has been working with rice cookers for 40 years. After spending much of his career with Toshiba, he is now a senior specialist in the Research & Development
(R & D) team in Midea‘s Small Appliances Division.
He has been a key player in the success of the Midea induction heating (IH)
rice cooker, which has been a star product
since it was launched in Tokyo in April.
On MIP, Midea‘s internal website, he has
espoused some ideas about the game of
rugby and how many of its disciplines are
transferrable to business in general and
Midea in particular.
"The purpose of a business is to
bring something of value to society," said Miyaguchi, adding that
the role of the Small Appliances Division is to improve the living standard of the consumer and invest a decent amount of its
profit into continuing this process.

Big Picture
The Rise and Rise of Spanish
By Berta Lorente
L
Crown of Castile in the center and south of the peninsula. In
the 16th century, due to the colonization of America, Spanish
spread throughout much of the Americas and has been ever
present since.
The Spanish language is present on six continents. As well
as being the official language of over 20 countries, it has a degree of formality in the United States, the Philippines and Oceania. About 400 million Spanish speakers worldwide, 95% of
the total, are in the Americas, specifically in Latin America and
some US states.
Similar to British and American English, Spanish is spoken in different ways throughout the world. It is especially diverse in the way it is written. Two of the most common differences, the use of "you" in Spain, which is used to address the
third person singular, while Hispanic Americans,
use it to mean "you" informally. Nouns can also
be different, the word for computer in Spain is
"ordenador", while in Latin America it is
"computadora".
In the 21th century, Spanish has around 470
million people who speak it as a first or second
language, second only to Mandarin. It is the
third most spoken language in the world and has over 20 million students.
The language will continue to expand. It is anticipated
that by the 2050s, 10% of the world‘s population will speak it,
according to the Cervantes Institute. In a highly competitive job
market, an increasing number of people are realizing the usefulness of a language that is spoken in so many countries that are
playing a bigger role in the global economy, according to Luis
anguages, like empires, inevitably rise and fall. Reasons why they rise are similar: resilience, luck and necessity.
English, today the most studied language in the world, started
life as a minor Germanic dialect around 500 AD. Latin, the
standard language of science until the 18th century, later became
the subject of the children‘s rhyme: ‗Latin is a language, as dead

If you go to Yangshuo, a popular tourist destination in
south China, there is a good chance you will hear Japanese, Russian, German and Korean travelers communicate in English.
This suggests English is and will remain the language of the
world, but it is not the only one that is growing.
Of any language today, Spanish is the third most spoken
and second most studied. Like English, it
came from humble beginnings. Derived
mostly from Latin and is the official language of Spain, nineteen countries in the
Americas, and Equatorial Guinea, a small
oil rich country on the west coast of Africa.
Spanish is also known as Castilian,
as it has its origin in the region of Castile in Spain. It evolved
from several dialects which were descended from Latin in the
Iberian Peninsula after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th
century. The Moorish invasion of the 8th century meant Spanish
also became highly influenced by Arabic.
In the Christian kingdoms of subsequent years, there were
several Romanesque forms: Catalan, Navarre-Aragon, The Castilian, Asturian-Leon and Galician-Portuguese. At the end of the
11th century it began a process of linguistic leveling which resulted in the formation of what is now known as the Spanish
language.
As King of Castile, Alfonso X (1221-1284) fostered the
development of a cosmopolitan court that encouraged learning.
As a result of the subsequent translations of works from Arabic
and Latin into the vernacular of Castile, many intellectual changes took place, perhaps the most notable being encouragement of
the use of Castilian as a primary language of higher learning,
science, and law.
Thereafter, it spread gradually with the expansion of the

Not only can Spanish help you book a hotel room in

The Coming Together of Countries (Cont.)
By Kevin McGeary
Advances solicited the feelings of attendees
from various countries.
Argentina— German B. Damiano
of Midea-Carrier ABC said the past year
has been a success. Residential air conditioning was particularly lucrative, according to Damiano.
When asked why this was, Damiano
cited good distribution, strong processes, a skilled HR team and
a strong brand. The joint-venture‘s Surrey brand is particularly
successful. ―Our biggest challenges now include increasing our
range of appliances and building brand awareness,‖ said Damiano.
Singapore—Julius Oczujda is a Human
Resources Specialist who has been with
Midea since 2013. He is currently based in
Singapore, where the Midea brand had no
presence whatsoever as recently as 2010.
―In just five years we have gone from zero
to being present everywhere where white
goods are sold and having a great deal of
visibility,‖ said Julius. When asked what
challenges Midea still faced in the city state,
he cited its brand status. ―Chinese brands
are still not as trusted as Japanese brands,‖ said Julius, adding
that in the next year the product range in Singapore would increase.
Egypt—Amr Said is Miraco managing director for Egypt and Africa. He
said that the past year had been particularly successful in terms of residential air
conditioning.
His stated goal is to make Midea
one of the biggest brands on the continent. ―It is a top company, with great
products and a good brand. In Egypt we want to help it gain its
rightful place as one of the leading brands in the industry,‖ said
Said.
26
India—Sukhwant Singh is Chief Financial
Officer of Carrier-Midea India. Up to
now, the joint venture has mostly been
involved with residential air conditioners,
but Singh said they were about to move
into other areas.
―Soon we will launch washing machines,
water heaters, water purifiers and other
products,‖ said Singh.
When asked about the sponsorship of Indian Premier
League cricket team Royal Challengers Bangalore, he said it was
great, bringing association between the Midea brand and some
of the top figures in India‘s most loved sport.
MACC—Eli Glanzberg has been President of Midea America & Canada Corporation (MACC) since January 2014. Previously
he served as vice president of the corporation and general manager of the refrigeration
and laundry division.
He said he and his colleagues enjoyed
the speeches. In terms of his own branch‘s
progress, Glanzberg said that one of the
biggest success stories of the past year was
getting big placements in Walmart.
―RAC has been pretty good for us, as has refrigeration,‖
said Glanzberg.
Germany—Michael Habla has been with Midea for seven
years. He described this year‘s MIBC as detailed and well organized, saying that the event becomes more well-structured every
year.
―Midea and its brands are still only making baby steps but it is a long long process, said Habla. He has been at the
company through a large number of
structural changes so has worked under
RAC, the now defunct Midea International Division and is now with Midea
International Business.
