It was built in 1788 by John Brown, a merchant, patriot, politician, and slave trader. The Brown family was one of the wealthiest and most influential families of the day, and they had equally important visitors including George Washington and Abigail Adams. Today, visitors will experience what life was like in the 18th century, and learn how Providence became the city that it is today. Activity: When he was a boy, George Washington wrote a list of Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior. Read a few of Washington’s rules and decide if we still follow them today. What other rules are important? 1. Treat everyone with respect. 2. Do not start what you cannot finish. Keep your promises. 3. Kill no vermin or pests in the company of others. 4.
