WORK WON’T KILL YOU An exibition of their work, called Work Won’t Kill You, was held at the SALTQuarters Gallery.
Review of Work
Won’t Kill You
On June 1st SALTQuarters celebrated the
opening of our Artist in Residence Patty Ortiz’s
project Work Won’t Kill You. After placing
an ad in the paper, Ortiz assembled a forensic
art team donned in white lab coats to help her
explore the Near Westside neighborhood. If
you were out and about in the weeks preceding
the opening, you may have seen Patty and her
team taking photographs, talking to residents,
and mapping out significant features of the
community. Back at the gallery, the workforce
acted as if they were factory employees by
keeping a regimented schedule, a daily log of
their progress and morale, and even using time
cards to keep track of their hours. They also
had a wall size grid of images from The Wizard
of Oz and The Wiz, which the public was invited
to fill in with colorful dots, to emphasize the
concept of home.
The opening itself was a wonderful opportunity
to not only bring the community together
once again, but to share stories of the Near
Westside and hear about the team’s experiences
throughout the course of this project. While the
team members ranged from longtime residents
to brand new community members, they all
shared a sincere enthusiasm for the project.
They spoke of discovering a community
garden, an established boxing gym, and even
a hybrid tree that grows
several fruits at once. Each
photo on display unveiled
another hidden gem of the
neighborhood and revealed
another anecdote. This is
the type of project every
city should implement and
one that we have been so
fortunate to have on display
here at SALTQuarters.

Near Westside showing off
its strengths, challenges, quirks, and perhaps
most importantly, the tightknit community at
its core.
Placing the activities of a workgroup in an
aesthetic context sets in motion an engaging
dynamic between observer and observed that
results in a shared aesthetic experience.” Patty
will be at work in the gallery for all of May.

sus fortalezas, desafíos, manías, y quizás lo
más importante, la comunidad en su núcleo.

in a home, refashioning common elements

the summer, the Syracuse University School of
Architecture and S.A.L.T. District invite you to
