This year, it will be even bigger and better as the Near West Side
Initiative (NWSI) partners with WCNY, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Metro
PCS, the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion, the Gifford
Foundation, La Liga, La Casita, the Westside Residents Coalition, the
Literacy Coalition, PEACE, Hillside, Huntington Family Center, and
CNY Latino to make this a must-see multicultural event.
On Thursday, August 13th from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m., Skiddy Park
will be transformed into a gathering spot for kids and adults to hear
great music, eat delicious food, and play games. This year’s program
will include live music and dance, inflatables, live animals to see
and pet, facepainting, a dunk tank, balloon animals, raffles and giveaways, a variety of games for the kids and adults, and much more.
There will also be plenty of great food all generously sponsored by
Hofmanns, Byrne Dairy, and Nojaim Bros. Grocery Store.
This year the theme for
the Block Party is “Be My Neighbor Day” from PBS’s great kids show,
Daniel Tiger. As part of the day there will be tons of fun activities to
showcase how to be a great neighbor, and what it means to be a part
of a growing and vibrant community. As part of the theme there will
be trolley rides around the neighborhood highlighting all the great
things happening in our community.
Don’t miss this great day of fun for the entire family. You’ll get to
see all of your neighbors, friends and family as the whole near Westside community comes together to celebrate the exciting changes that
are happening in the neighborhood. See you there, rain or shine!

Music, which sends needy kids on new musical journeys

Every human on the planet is affected
by music, for most of us on a daily basis.
Yet music is still something that is
often misunderstood. Music programs
are often cut from school schedules.
And viable job opportunities in composition, performance, music therapy,
music industry, recording and theater
are often overlooked when students are
weighing their career options. Many
people fail to realize how much time and
money goes into preparing a student
simply to audition for music school.
Dick Ford started the nonprofit Signature Music educational program 23
years ago to offer all children the opportunity to excel at music, as well as to
succeed in life.
“Of all academic disciplines, music is
the most elitist,” Ford says. “You can’t
get into college without private lessons
or good instruments. But the ability to
get private lessons stifles many people
from making a career in music.. The
majority of kids in music schools are
from affluent suburbs. It has less to do
with the school and more with the type
of people in that school district.”
Signature Music started as a summer
camp in 1992, offering middle and high
school students options in band, choir,
show choir (with choreography) and jazz.
The Signature Syracuse program, founded in 2000, runs throughout the school
year, allowing underprivileged teens in
the Syracuse school district access to a
free instrument and lessons. Students
perform weekly at events throughout
Central New York, including parades,
ceremonies and celebrations. The program, which is housed at the Delavan
Center, also helps prepare students for
college applications and auditions.
The programs offer kids who otherwise might never even have access to an
instrument the chance to play, meet peers
like themselves and potentially change
their social situation.
“If you’re a poor kid, you have no backup,” Ford says. “The day you graduate
from high school, you’re an unemployed
adult. You can go to college, work at
Burger King or go into the military. The
important thing is to realize you’re an
adult. We try to help kids understand how
to become an adult.”
Since 1992, 60 to 90 students have taken
part each year in the Signature Music
summer camp, while an average of 20 to
25 students participate in the year-round
Signature Syracuse program. Funds for
the programs and instruments are all
gathered through donations and grants.
More than 300 of Ford’s summer
campers have gone on to become professionals in all parts of the music
industry. Many have also come back
to help as teachers in the program,
while others have excelled in careers
outside of music.
The goal is that Signature Music students
will understand that contemporary society
embraces creative individuals, and that
within the camp they’ll find a community
in which they belong. They’ll learn sightreading and technical competence, but also
have time to hang out and interact freely.
They’ll gather tools to further themselves
in music, but also in society. They’ll learn
that self-worth doesn’t come from competitive grading and standardized tests, but
from the ability to understand that every
individual has uncharted potential in so
many areas.
“Basically, we’re just about opening
opportunities for people at all levels,”
Ford said. “A lot of people have misconceptions about what music is all
about. A lot of people don’t realize when
you’re involved in education, especially
in music, you’re not putting anything
into the student. You’re creating an
opportunity for people to get in touch
with their soul.”

This summer is shaping up to be a
busy time at SALTQuar ters. First,
we are excited to announce that Moira
Williams will be continuing her work in
the neighborhood as artist-in-residence
until January! May was a busy month for
Moira as she completed her Urban Birds
+ People Under and in the Trees event
along with help from students, neighbors,
and
ceramicists
from the
Ceramics
Guild. She will continue her art projects
within the community when she returns in
August. On the docket include constructing
a few neighborhood announcement bulletin
boards and completing a narrative project
on neighborhood history.
SALTQuarters is also pleased to announce
that photographer Laura Heyman will be
taking up residence in the building in July. A
photography professor at Syracuse University,
her time in the neighborhood will be spent
exploring a series of works similar to projects
completed in Haiti. Her focus will be on
capturing neighborhood residents in a portrait
style settings. The studio will be open for her
project until the end of December!

Drink More Water
and Limit Sugar Sweetened Beverages.
You’re Sweet Enough!
What is a sugar-sweetened beverage?
Sugar-sweetened beverages contain added sugar. Many sugar drinks such as soda, sports
drinks, energy drinks, and sweetened teas have added sugar in them. You can drink 16
teaspoons of sugar in a single 20 ounce serving! More than 10% of the calories kids and
teens have in a day, come from sugar-sweetened drinks.
Is there a recommended daily intake of added sugar?
You don’t need added sugars in your diet at all. The maximum intake of sugar should be no
more than 130 calories from added sugar (for an average of 2,000 calories per day diet).
One 20-ounce soda has nearly twice that many calories!
Do I need sports drinks to stay hydrated while I am
playing sports?
These drinks are generally expensive and unnecessary. Water is the best drink for active kids
and adults. Keep water on hand before, during, and after activities.
How Can I cut back on sugarsweetened beverages?
Drink water, seltzer, or flavored waters with little or no added
sugar. Tap water is a good choice because it is healthful, has no
calories and is free!
Limit your fruit juice intake (100% fruit juice only) to no more
than six ounces each day. Try diluting juice with water to cut
down on calories and sugar.
Read labels and choose drinks with no more than 25 calories per
8-ounce serving!
