Jones, Financial Advisor Transferring Financial Assets: During your lifetime or at death? T ransferring financial assets (such as stocks) during your lifetime may come with income tax consequences not present when assets are transferred at death. Below outlines some basic situations to consider. What’s the best way to transfer your assets to your heirs? Depends on what you want the tax implications to be. For assets transferred during one’s lifetime, the tax basis is transferred as well. Assets transferred at death receive a step up in basis from the date of death value. For example, assume Joe bought stocks in 1985 for $25,000 and today, those same stocks are worth $100,000. If Joe gives those stocks to his daughter during his lifetime she’ll receive his $25,000 cost basis. On the other hand, if Joe gives those stocks to his daughter at his death, she’ll receive a step up in basis to the date of death value of $100,000. So generally speaking, it is not wise to gift highly appreciated assets due to loss of step up in basis. If Joe’s daughter sells the stocks after receipt of the lifetime gift, she will owe capital gains taxes on $75,000. This is the difference between her tax basis transferred from Joe and the current value at sale. However, if Joe’s daughter sells the stocks after receipt at Joe’s death, she will likely owe little or no capital gains tax at all if sold right away. Remember, you can transfer $14,000 worth annually tax free for you and the recipient through the annual gift tax exclusion. Amounts above that will be applied as a reduction of your lifetime gift tax exclusion currently set at $5.25 million. Contact Brian K. Now I know what it feels like to be a “snowbird.” What a great feeling it is! We enjoyed beautiful Arizona weather - perfect to go hiking in the mountains and biking along the roadside bike paths. I also found time to relax and read a book or two without feeling guilty. It truly was a great opportunity to grab some R & R. Since I’ve been back we’ve been working on our 2013 Calendar. Circa ’21 has come out with some fantastic shows you won’t want to miss. The Southern Crossroads Show still has openings and from what I’ve heard it could be the best show of all three. Going to these shows is a great way to spend a day! (Continued on Page 4) Pilot Grove Savings Bank presents… June is the perfect time of year to visit Michigan.
