and share blessings with family
and friends. During this joyous
season, share the warmth, beauty
and wonderful spirit of spring and

elcome springtime with this annual Heritage Club event.
NOTE: The date Thursday, April 18, 2013, is correct!
It has been changed to accommodate our entertainers, Barefoot
Beck and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen, from Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
We are excited to bring Barefoot Becky and the Band back to
West Point for an afternoon performance. The popular polka
group, featuring Becky Livermore on accordion and vocals, has
been performing throughout the United States since 1988. If you
mix three cups of German-style polka music with one cup of
Czech music, and a half-cup each of country, big band, and party
favorites, you’ve got a recipe for fun with Barefoot Becky and
the Ivanhoe Dutchmen that’s really cookin’!
The Heritage Club Spring Catered Luncheon will begin promptly
at 11:30 a.m. Our fully-catered menu will include roast beef,
mashed potatoes and gravy, salad, vegetable, roll, dessert and
beverage. Entertainment will immediately follow the meal.
You won’t want to miss the fun performance of Barefoot Becky
and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen, so make your reservations early.
Please call and leave your reservation with any staff member in
West Point at 319-837-6121; Mt. Pleasant at 319-385-3822, or 1888-385-2265; or call Pilot Grove at 319-469-3951 or 1-888283-2265 (toll free) by Tuesday, April 2, 2013.

With Brian K. Jones, Financial Advisor
Transferring Financial Assets:
During your lifetime or at death?
T
ransferring financial assets (such as stocks) during your
lifetime may come with income tax consequences not
present when assets are transferred at death. Below outlines
some basic situations to consider.
What’s the best way to transfer your assets to your heirs?
Depends on what you want the tax implications to be.
For assets transferred during one’s lifetime, the tax basis is
transferred as well. Assets transferred at death receive a step
up in basis from the date of death value. For example,
assume Joe bought stocks in 1985 for $25,000 and today,
those same stocks are worth $100,000. If Joe gives those
stocks to his daughter during his lifetime she’ll receive his
$25,000 cost basis. On the other hand, if Joe gives those
stocks to his daughter at his death, she’ll receive a step up in
basis to the date of death value of $100,000.
So generally speaking, it is not wise to gift highly
appreciated assets due to loss of step up in basis.
If Joe’s daughter sells the stocks after receipt of the lifetime
gift, she will owe capital gains taxes on $75,000. This is the
difference between her tax basis transferred from Joe and
the current value at sale. However, if Joe’s daughter sells
the stocks after receipt at Joe’s death, she will likely owe
little or no capital gains tax at all if sold right away.
Remember, you can transfer $14,000 worth annually tax
free for you and the recipient through the annual gift tax
exclusion. Amounts above that will be applied as a
reduction of your lifetime gift tax exclusion currently set at
$5.25 million.

Paramount Theatre- Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The Follies returns to its home for over 30 years – the
beautiful Paramount Theatre – for this “don’t miss”
show. And what a homecoming it will be!
This year the Follies begins a new era with a music,
comedy and dance spectacular that will thrill longtime fans and new audiences alike. This original show
will feature pop, Broadway and musical mash-ups that
pay tribute to the Great American Songbook as well as
the YouTube generation.
Prior to the show we will enjoy a dining experience
prepared by Kirkwood Community College’s Culinary
Arts students at their restaurant, The Class Act. Our
lunch, which will include, chicken breast, herb roasted
potatoes, house salad, breads, vegetable, beverage and
dessert, will be prepared and served by the
professional teaching staff and students of the college.
Don’t miss this very special event welcoming the
Follies back to the Paramount. With only 30 tickets
available, make your reservations soon by calling the
West Point Office at 319-837-6121.
Now I know what it feels like to be a
“snowbird.” What a great feeling it is!
We enjoyed beautiful Arizona weather
- perfect to go hiking in the mountains
and biking along the roadside bike
paths. I also found time to relax and
read a book or two without feeling
guilty. It truly was a great opportunity
to grab some R & R.
Since I’ve been back we’ve been working on our
2013 Calendar. Circa ’21 has come out with some
fantastic shows you won’t want to miss. The
Southern Crossroads Show still has openings and
from what I’ve heard it could be the best show of all
three. Going to these shows is a great way to spend a
day!

A joyous, hilarious, and frequently touching production
set during the Great Depression, “Southern
Crossroads” follows a family of musicians who arrive
in Virginia only to find the doors locked and the house piano out on the street.
This gifted family of musicians decide to bring entertainment to the locals
regardless, treating the audience to an old-fashioned, high-spirited, Southern
jamboree with songs like “Mountain Dew,” “I’ll Fly away,” “House of the
Rising Sun,” “Keep on the Sunny
Side,” “Midnight Special,” and more.

Some of our Heritage Club
Members have asked us to put
together a Mackinac Island trip.
It’s going to be great, not only the
Island but the other places we’ll
visit along the way. This will be a
new adventure for me - it’s one of
the places I’ve always wanted to
visit. How about you?
Next we have our See Iowa Trip
to Orange City for the annual
Tulip Festival. Did you know
their Marching Band was in the
Tournament of Roses parade? Al
Roker, one of the commentators
for the parade, was presented with
his very own wooden shoes; the
same shoes the band members
wore in the parade.
Hopefully, you’ve had time to rest
these past few months and are ready
to join in the fun. I’m back, so give
me a call, stop by the office or I’ll
see you at one of our upcoming
events.
