to enhance body, mind and spirit, with a focus in the creative arts, holistic health,
interfaith exploration, and environmental stewardship. Situated on a seven-acre
campus between Alpine and Mulford Roads in Rockford, Illinois, Womanspace has
art studios, galleries, Gallery2Go gift shop, beautiful gardens and a labyrinth, and
operates as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
Goals & Philosophy
Our goal is to offer programs that stimulate awareness, develop competence,
encourage creativity, and generate healthy decision-making. We provide
support that offers honesty, compassion, challenge, and spiritual growth.
Womanspace works cooperatively with others, striving for collaborative
partnerships in our endeavors.
Womanspace believes every woman is a spiritual being, having within her the
potential for health, self-reliance, creativity, wisdom and responsible caring. By
enhancing her potential, she enriches her own life, the life of her family, and
the lives of other people with whom she relates. Through the strong, healthy,
self-development of each individual, the world we live in is made a stronger,

Staff Notes
As many of you may know, we are very reluctantly saying goodbye to
our beloved Program Coordinator, Pat Bonavia, as she moves on to the
next chapter in her life, as a sun-loving beach babe in Sarasota, FL. We
are grateful, however, to have found Pat’s replacement in Julie Maffei,
who we are certain will do a spectacular job! We wanted to share some
of their thoughts as they move through this period of transformation:
PAT, how long have you been involved with
Womanspace? Almost 30 years. I was contacted by
Board of Directors
President — Colleen McDonald, Occupational Therapist, Rockford Public Schools
Vice President — Holly Hanson, President, Owner, & Licensed Professional
Business Coach, The Business Edge, Inc.
Secretary — Kathleen Flanagan, President & Executive Consultant,
Leadership Communication, Inc.
Treasurer — Lisa Roche Berlage, Senior Wealth Financial Advisor, Vanguard
Kim Kaufman, V.P. Regional Treasury Management Sales Manager, Heartland Financial
someone (tho I can’t remember who!) to serve on what
Kristin Kofoed, Graphic Designer & Owner, White Leaf Creative
was then the marketing/fundraising committee. I obliged
Susan Lee, Assistant Director of Pharmacy, Rockford Memorial Hospital
— and was instantly hooked on the place!
Chrissy Stanfa, Co-owner, St. Burns’ StageHands
What is your favorite memory here? I’ve made many
wonderful memories over 30 years, but one that stands out to me is the first
“Reach for the Arts” event, which has since transformed into Passport to the Arts.
Connie Wenger, Financial Analyst
Ex Officio — Elaine Hirschenberger, SSSF, Executive Director
That first year was so fun because everyone got a piece of art! The anticipation
Consultants
of what you were going to get was thrilling and everyone had a blast. But, like
Consultants serve as resource persons to the Staff and Board of Directors of
Womanspace. They provide direction, advice and diversified skills in the fields of
psychology, law, finance and education.
I said, there have been thousands of incredible memories.
What will you miss most about Womanspace? Definitely the people. I’ll
miss working with an incredibly fun, positive and healthy staff, as well as our
great group of enthusiastic, hard-working volunteers.
What are you looking forward to in Florida? Well, with temperatures in
the teens here in Illinois, I’d of course have to say the warmer weather! But,
the best part will be being closer to my family. I have two sisters, a sister-in-law
and mother-in-law who live in Florida and I’m looking forward to spending
lots of time with them.
When will you be back next?! I’m hoping to be back as often as possible,
but I’ll be back for sure in late March before we take off for the glorious
Womanspace trip to Spain, which I’m really looking forward to! Nine days in
five beautiful Spanish cities with fabulous travel companions! (FYI there are
still spots available if anyone would like to join the fun! See pg. 12)
And JULIE, how long have you been involved with
Womanspace? Since 2008, when I attended one of
Dorothy’s Supper & Film discussions. Then, I joined Pat
Bonavia’s weekly walking group, which was awesome. We
walked many miles together! I also ended up joining the

so peaceful and beautiful. Working on the grounds never seems like work.
What are you looking forward to in working at Womanspace? I’m
most looking forward to being here more often and enjoying the campus

Film & Discussion: Fabulous Fashionistas
WK14-9
This Cutting Edge documentary
explores the art of ageing with six
extraordinary women who have
an average age of 80, and who
are determined to look fabulous,
have fun and redefine old age.
A recent article stated the following, “… there are moral rules governing the clothes
we wear, especially as we age. Short skirts, low necks and even sleeveless dresses
are taboo, presumably on the grounds that the older female body is so repellent
that it should be kept under wraps.”
Wouldn’t it be great not to give a darn about what fashion dictates and just dress
to suit yourself all of the time? Get introduced to some very fun, healthy women
who can certainly model that type of behavior and it may even change the way
you think about your closet!
Connie Wenger retired from a 22-year career in corporate America
and spent a few years exploring her options. She volunteers for
several non-profits, is on the Womanspace Board, ran for local
public office, served in the Peace Corps, and enjoys spending time
with her grandchildren!

Meditation is the practice and process of paying
attention and focusing your awareness. This class
is for the person wanting to learn this process or
re-engage after slipping out of a regular practice.
Whether you’re seeking greater focus to get your
job done more efficiently, less stress and more
peace of mind, or a deeper appreciation of the beauty and richness of life, the simple
practice of sitting down and turning your attention inward can do wonders! Bring
a yoga mat or rug if you would like to do this lying down. You can also choose to
do this in a sitting position on the floor or in a chair.

Archetypes and Art
WK14-12
King, Queen, Lover,
Warrior, Magician
— all are symbolic
archetypes used crossculturally in myth and
storytelling. Carl Jung gave us new understanding of the conscious and unconscious
in the early 20th century, suggesting the existence of universal forms (archetypes)
that channel experiences and emotions. This results in recognizable and typical
patterns of behavior. Art complements this theory by making these energy patterns
concrete and tangible. We will focus on the four archetypal patterns above and link
them to an art form to gain a new connection to the internal self and create a road
map for living life.
Kathy Cox is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor at
Connections Therapy Center and has 30 years experience

Film & Discussion: Food Patriots WK14-13
Soup Kitchen at Emmanuel Lutheran
Touched by their son’s battle with a food borne
super bug, filmmakers Jeff & Jennifer Spitz
document their family’s struggle to raise backyard
chickens, grow food, and transform into Food
Patriots. This film looks at changes in purchasing,
growing and eating better food from the view of
a Chicago suburban family. Their journey takes you across Northern Illinois and
Southern Wisconsin and introduces you to many ways that communities have been
uniting efforts to educate, grow better food and look at food differently. One of
the great messages of the film is that it is not an all-or-nothing choice. Even small
changes can have a positive impact on your life and health.
Do you want to help make a difference? Are you
interested in helping prepare a meal for the hungry
at Mission House Soup Kitchen, serving around 200
meals to people in need? It is very rewarding to
hear a warm “thank you” accompanied by a smile
just because you did something as simple as serving
a person a plate of food. This is not just another community service but a reality
check! If you are interested in helping, please call Kay Strand at 815-397-9220 or
e-mail [email protected].
Amanda Kirchner is the business development manager for a local software company

Nerdy Optometrist Cooks Fish!
WK14-15
Doug Shumaker, a self-proclaimed nerdy optometrist by day,
started cooking at age ten, naively accepting the challenge
from his exasperated mother, “If you don’t like what I cook,
you can cook for yourself!” Cooking for himself became a
necessity and part creative joy. After changing the classic
recipe for oatmeal cookies to suit his personal tastes, the myth
of “cooking is hard” was shattered, and he was hooked. He has published the book
Chicks Dig Guys Who Cook.

The spring equinox is one of the four great
solar festivals of the year. Day and night are
equal, poised and balanced, but about to tip
over on the side of light. The spring equinox
is sacred to dawn, youth, the morning star
and the east. Winter is finally over and spring
beginning to show signs of returning. It’s a time to celebrate rebirth and growth.
You will not want to miss this celebration!
Sallyann Roberts, MSW is
experienced in a variety
of therapies and believes
in living life with openness
and authenticity, despite
obstacles.
Lisa Novak is executive director of Northern Illinois Hospice & Grief Center and is a
member of Womanspace.
Tabitha Benson is a Montessori Teacher in the Rockford Public Schools, is
passionate about teaching, and loves planning ritual, storytelling, and co-leading
the monthly Breathe service at Emmanuel Lutheran.
Doug is making a second appearance (by request
of those who attended last time) and is going to
prepare one of his favorite dishes….FISH! Many
people may find the idea of cooking fish at home
a little intimidating; however, with a little practice,
you can learn to make delicious fish every time.
Doug will walk you through the steps to fix a flavorful, healthy fish entrée and
then you will get to enjoy sampling the end product! You will find yourself cooking
and enjoying fish much more often! Doug’s knowledge and presentation style will
have you walking away with a new-found confidence and a smile on your face.

What Was Said & What We Heard
WK14-16
Many of us follow an inner script that was
primarily written by others and tends to
contain many negative messages. Most of these
messages were learned when we were young
and impressionable children. Those messages
often get in the way of meaningful and sometimes important conversations and
relationships – often with people we care the most about.
Well, we’re not kids anymore and we have the ability to rewrite the script and enjoy
a healthier communication style and self-concept. Join Shiraz as she shares some of
the most common messages we tell ourselves and tips for rewriting those scripts.

camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two
individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have
nothing in common. French with subtitles.

Are you planning a trip and not
sure of how to go about it? Are
you making your first or fourth
International Trip and want to
make sure you don’t end up in
a non-English speaking country
without a clue of how to get to
your hotel? Are you wondering
whether you should get trip
insurance? Should you use a travel
agent; what’s the best seat to try to get on the plane, the best time of year to travel
to a specific destination? What airlines should you avoid; is using a tour is the best
alternative? If you have had any of these questions or more, you will want to attend
this very informative Lunch and Learn and get your questions answered by Jan,
who has experienced it all! She will talk about what is usually included in a trip,
what your responsibility is, what documentation is needed; She will discuss pros
and cons of using a tour, what to expect on a cruise, travel insurance, baggage
guidelines, single supplements, solo traveling. You will be able to plan your next

Timbuktu.” She has done all this and more in over thirty years
of travel. Her travel adventures and experiences have provided
a wealth of information, which she will share with the group. She is a former teacher

LL14-10
We want to keep up with friends
and family, but sometimes lack
the confidence or knowledge of
how to make use of the world’s
fastest growing communication tool,
Facebook! If you have resisted using
it or just get confused about some
of the options and tools with this very comprehensive (and some say fun) way of
staying in touch, you will want to come to this very informative Q & A on Facebook.
Bring your questions and your lunch. Gain a greater level of
confidence in the very popular social medium.
Did you know that within several hours of
Rockford, there are three Retreat Centers that
you can “escape to” and experience a type of
solitude and silence so rarely experienced in
our daily lives? Today, more people are going
on retreat than ever before. They come from all
backgrounds and age ranges. What they have in common is a desire for silence,
solitude and reflection. These desires are innate to the human condition and are
not bound by a particular time, religion or set of beliefs. Join us to meet and learn
from Sister Julia Bathon as she talks about the retreat experience, the benefits of
solitude and how to prepare for a three-day stay.
Liz Kulevich Hiemstra is the marketing coordinator at

Womansong Chorale
Interest Groups
MG14-5, MG14-6, MG14-7, MG14-8
Most of the time, we exist in mindlessness, a state of
semi-awareness governed by habit and inattention.
Mindlessness causes us to suffer, probably more than
we’re even aware.
Mindfulness can be defined in a variety of ways, but simply
stated it is a deliberate way of paying attention to what is
occurring within oneself as it is happening. Mindfulness
is moment-by-moment awareness. It’s paying attention
without judgment or evaluation. When we’re mindful, we become more mentally alert,
we’re more open and attentive and we’re able to perceive ourselves more clearly – as
well as observing details that often escape our notice. If you can identify with any of
these statements, you may find this monthly group very helpful.
Elaine Hirschenberger is the Executive Director and Co-founder of Womanspace
and has years of experience of practicing mindfulness and
attentiveness. She received her degree in English from Alverno
College and pursued further studies in art and design at College
of DuPage, Rockford University and NIU. She is an active
member of School Sisters of Saint Francis, an international
community of women religious based in Milwaukee.

About Time
Words & Pictures
SF14-5
At the age of 21, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers he
can travel in time. The night after another unsatisfactory New
Year party, Tim’s father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men
in his family have always had the ability to travel through
time. Tim can’t change history, but he can change what
happens and has happened in his own life—so he decides
to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend. Sadly,
that turns out not to be as easy as you might think.
Moving from the Cornwall coast to London to train as a lawyer, Tim finally meets
the beautiful but insecure Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love, and then an
unfortunate time-travel incident means he’s never met her at all. So they meet for
the first time again—and again—but finally, after a lot of cunning time traveling,
he wins her back. (2013) (R)

his serious drinking problem that threatens to destroy his
world. When Juliet Binoche’s Dina Delsanto, the new art
teacher, arrives, Marcus is energized, and soon there’s an
open debate in the school about whether words or pictures
have the greater power. It’s a battle between the dominance
of the left and right brain. Delsanto is already an acclaimed abstract artist, but
she no longer paints because of painful, crippling rheumatoid arthritis. But soon
she is forced to paint again when the war between the two teachers becomes a
school-wide event. (2013) (PG-13)

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
Tess, an aspiring seamstress, thinks she’s had an
incredibly lucky break when she is hired by famous
designer Lady Lucile Duff Gordon to be her personal
maid on the Titanic. Once on board, Tess catches the
eye of two men—a kind sailor and an enigmatic Chicago
businessman—who offer differing views of what lies
ahead for her in America. But on the fourth night,
disaster strikes, and amidst the chaos, Tess is one of
the last people allowed on a lifeboat.
Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to “aging out” of the
foster care system. A community service position helping
an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing
keeping Molly out of “juvie” and worse.
The survivors are rescued and taken to New York, but when rumors begin to
circulate about the choices they made, Tess is forced to confront a serious
question. Did Lady Duff Gordon save herself at the expense of others? Torn
between loyalty to Lucile and her growing suspicion that the media’s charges
might be true, Tess must decide whether to stay quiet and keep her fiery
mentor’s good will or face what might be true and forever change her future.

The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
BW14-6
The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey
romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters
for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones,
it’s been more useful in communicating grief, mistrust,
and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care
system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her
only connection to the world is through flowers and
their meanings.
Now eighteen and emancipated from the system, Victoria
has nowhere to go and sleeps in a public park, where she plants a small garden of
her own. Soon a local florist discovers her talents, and Victoria realizes she has a
gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But a mysterious
vendor at the flower market has her questioning what’s been missing in her life,
and when she’s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide
whether it’s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness.

Yoga Classes with Keri Knutson
Our yoga classes are open to all levels, men & women. Recommended for beginners, young & old, injured & athletic. Yoga is a great way to manage
and reduce tension & stress. Dress comfortably and bring a yoga mat and eye pillow (if you have one).
Keri began practicing yoga in 1999. Her journey has included studying the history, lineage, philosophy, and systems of Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Iyengar,
and Bikram yoga, focusing on Vinyasa Flow to deepen her own practice. She currently teaches Vinyasa Flow and all level Hatha yoga.
Hatha Vinyasa/Restorative Yoga
Vinyasa Flow Yoga
Hatha yoga is a slow-paced, gentle asana practice
focusing on introducing basic yoga poses and
establishing a strong foundation in the practice of
yoga. Hatha yoga balances the Ha – “sun/stimulating”
energy with the Tha – “moon/calming” energy.
Vinyasa Flow incorporates the breath
with synchronized movement, allowing
the breath to move the body. This builds
internal heat leading to purification of the
body and aids in the elimination of toxins and waste from the body. Physically, sweat
expels toxins and re-energizes the body. Metaphysically, mentally, and emotionally,
the synchronized breathing relaxes your mind and helps to release any blockages of
energy flow throughout the body. Vinyasa Flow can improve flexibility and strength.
A stronger body, balanced mind, inner focus, mental clarity, and energetic balance
are all happy side effects of a regular yoga practice.
Restorative yoga helps promote deep relaxation of
the body and the mind. Postures provide similar
benefits to classic Hatha yoga postures and are
usually done in a supported manner to minimize strain and maximize opening.

anticipated experience) and have an even stronger desire to free inhibitions
and have fun! Who knows, your illustration might decorate your walls as
Nicole has done! Space is limited to 10 people so register early!

AJ14-7
Art Journaling can best be described as a combination of art and words to express
yourself. Usually kept in a spiral journal on pages that have been “prepped” to work
with a variety of mediums from acrylic paint to crayons. Different comments from
Art Journalers include the follow reasons for becoming Art Journal “Junkies”….
Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from structured
patterns. It is an excellent way to enhance an art journaling page or become the
entire focus of your page. In this class you will learn a number of basic patterns
and also get introduced to using color in your Zentangle.
• “Journaling gives me permission to be free, to use scraps of what’s lying in
my workspace, to play with pattern, to not finish a page and not feel bad…
it’s a way to look back and see who you were and who you’ve become”
Dates: February 24 (Register by Feb. 23)
Time: Tuesday, 6:00–8:00p
Instructor: Karen Grover
• “Art journaling is an inner dialogue with my innermost self—a dialogue that
keeps me true to myself and keeps me on my toes…wasn’t it Picasso that
said painting is just another way of keeping a diary?”
Session 3: Stamping & Stencils
• “It’s a reflection of who I am during that moment.”
We will be having five journaling sessions to experiment with different “art styles,”
so whether this is your first art journaling experience, or whether it is a long-time
passion, you will learn and grow from these classes. Come to one class or sign

Registration Tips
Register Early. Programs are filled on a first-paid/first registered basis.
Pay when you register. Womanspace requires payment at the time you
register. Payments may be made by cash, check, or credit card. Most programs
have a non-refundable $10 deposit. Exceptions are noted in writing.
Register by the deadline. Your Guide lists deadline dates by which
registration is due (usually 2 to 7 days before a program begins). Programs
may be cancelled due to insufficient registrations by deadline date.
Cancellation & Refund Policy
•If you cancel up to 7 calendar days prior to a program or event,
your payment, less the non-refundable deposit, will be refunded.
•If you cancel 4 days in advance, you may have your payment, less the
non-refundable deposit, transferred to another program.
•In the last 3 days, there are no refunds.
•If Womanspace cancels a program, a full refund will be sent to anyone
who has registered and paid.
•Incomplete or partial attendance at programs is not encouraged.
There is no reduction in fees if you are unable to attend all
scheduled sessions.

Memorial Gardens
Honor a living or deceased person by establishing a specially named fund or
feature at Womanspace, for example:
• Lilly Fernandez Memorial Meditation Garden
• Cindy Sievers Post & Stan Sievers Memorial benches and garden
• Barbara Sjostrom Memorial Bench
• Alissa Cargill Memorial Fountain
• Peace Pole honoring Womanspace’s Co-Founders
• The Anjali Pavilion
Memorials can also include the purchase/
installation of other items. For example:
• planting a tree or a total area; donating
a bench, boulder, arbor, swing, etc.
(e.g. Russ Milano memorial area) • installing a decorative fountain,
a drinking fountain, a pond, etc.
• funding a special program in honor of an individual (e.g. Ann Nemitz
Women in Crisis Fund; Cindy Sievers Post Memorial Library Fund)
• outfitting a room or special area (e.g. William Reif Gallery)
• purchasing needed equipment at the Center (list is available online)
• purchasing an engraved paver in the Celebration Garden at
the front entrance to Womanspace.
Families and friends are welcome to
discuss other ideas for memorials
with staff.
