Chillingham Public School 16th June 2016 SUCCESS THROUGH TEAMWORK DOT PAINTINGS The Year 3 and 4 students have been linking their art work with their History and English units based on the early Indigenous culture in our Tweed Valley. Throughout the year they have made: Pighabean Baskets from Bangalow Palms Bullroarer wood sticks - which make the sound of the great ancestral spirit Biame Rainbow Serpent paintings Hand rock spray paintings Totem etchings Dot paintings In these paintings the students prepared by looking, discussing and practising the totems and visual symbols used by Indigenous Australians to tell stories. They then chose their totem animal, composed their paintings and patiently painted their own stories. Here are some of them: Taila – Totem – Blue Penguin “Four people left their camp to hunt and gather food. They searched at a billabong and followed emu, kangaroo and possum footprints and every night they made new camps. But they didn’t find any of the animals they followed so they returned to their camp sad.” IMPORTANT DATES 17th June – Friday School Athletics Carnival 1st July – Friday * Last day of term * School reports go home TERM 3 18th July – Monday Pupil Free day 19th July – Tuesday Everyone at school 20th July – Wednesday ½ day Athletics for qualifiers @ Cudgen 22nd July – Friday Full Day Athletics carnival @ Cudgen – for ALL students VISION STATEMENT Our students are happy, literate lifelong learners. Malakai – Totem – The Scorpion “Once there were three hunters who went to find food because they were very hungry. On the way, they camped and met with four others who asked if they could join them. The three hunters said yes and together, they caught many big fish which they brought back to their tribe for a big feast.” Myah - Totem – The Bandicoot “The bandicoot was looking around the sacred sites for insects to eat. He scraped the red dirt and found a dozen grubs. When he found the grubs, there was a big, thick one and a little thin one. He then searched for some water and found a big waterhole and he slurped a big gulp and felt satisfied!” Phone: 0266 791255 Principal: Vicki Roach Web: chillinghamschool.nsw.edu.au From the Principal’s desk Hopefully we get a little more sunshine for our carnival tomorrow. Mrs Ward has landed safely in England and is enjoying time with her daughters. Congratulations to Mihaiela and the Mt Warning Warriors debating team – they won their first round of debating. Good luck with the next round on Monday. Thank you to everyone who came along to the P&C meeting yesterday, we value your contribution and appreciate your support. The students have loved the extra high jump practice – Mr Townsend is a little worn out but the students are very confident, it will be an exciting afternoon of high jumping on Friday. Tomorrow Friday, 17th June, we will be sun-screening and toileting the students here at school then walking to Chillingham sports fields – weather permitting. The K, 1, 2 students will be participating in fun games and tabloids and the Year 3, 4, 5, 6 students will be participating in discuss and shot put. They will then combine to run their age races and relays (parents wear your joggers – there’s a race for you too!). We will then be walking back to school for recess and lunch. The long jump and high jump will be held back here at school after the students have eaten their lunch. All friends and family are welcome to attend. If we are rained out tomorrow we will reschedule the carnival for WEDNESDAY 22ND… if that day is too wet we will run it whenever the weather permits. If you would like us to call you so you can attend, please phone Mrs Window on Monday. Students can come dressed in their sport team’s colours tomorrow – BEANTREE – red and CEDAR – green, with school hat and joggers please. Can you please make sure the outfit is appropriate for running and jumping. Appropriate clothing is more important than team colours. Can you please also ensure your child/ren remember to bring a water bottle and a jacket. Lunch will be a sausage sandwich and a drink for $4.00. THERE WILL BE NO SUSHI or NOODLES. NOTE: If the carnival is postponed due to the weather we will still be having the sausage sizzle. Junior and senior students who qualify in high jump, long jump, shot put and 800m will be competing at the half-day athletics carnival on Wednesday 20th July at Cudgen. NOTE this is only juniors, 11s and seniors. All other events will be run at the full day carnival. The full day athletics carnival will be the first Friday back next term, 22nd July at Cudgen. This will involve ALL students. Parents will need to transport their own children to and from the carnivals. We are not able to run a bus due to the start time and venue of the carnival. If you need assistance with transporting your child/ren to the carnival please contact the school. On Monday 20th June the SRC students will be presenting a cheque for $70 to John Ward - this was the money raised through the mufti day to assist John in his Kokoda Challenge Run. A Note from Mrs Dean Students in K/1/2 are reading ‘Matilda’ at the moment and I would like to show them the DVD before the end of term. The movie is rated PG. If you have any concerns, please contact me here at school before the end of next week. Northern NSW Local Health dental nurses will be visiting the school on Thursday 30 th June to give a free dental assessment to all Kindergarten students. A Dental Assessment form for those students is attached to this newsletter. Please complete the consent form and return it to school on Monday 20th June. SRC Report Mufti Day: On Wednesday 1st June the SRC organised a mufti day for an ex-student and former school captain, John Ward. We raised $70 for John so he can be a part of the Kakoda Challenge. The theme for the mufti day was ‘State of Origin’ with the students dressing up in either maroon or blue. It was a great day. Nullum House: Nullum House is a not for profit organisation that helps people in the local area in need. They must live in the 2484 area. Our school has been collecting food to assist Nullum House with their food parcels, which go to people in need of this type of assistance. We have collected a big tub full of food. The students were asked to bring in non-perishable foods. It was a great success. A representative of Nullum House will be coming to the school to accept the food items before the end of the term.
