LEA-6T module
u-blox 6 GPS receiver with Precision Timing
Product description
The LEA-6T supports precision GPS timing for demanding
positioning applications such as femto cells and WiMAX
basestations. It features a time mode function whereby
the GPS receiver assumes a stationary 3D position,
whether programmed manually or determined by
an initial self-survey. Stationary operation enables GPS
timing with only one visible satellite and eliminates
timing errors which otherwise result in positioning
errors. An accuracy of up to 15 ns is achievable by
using the quantization error information to compensate
the granularity of the time pulse. A built-in time mark
and counter unit provide precise time measurement of
external event inputs.
22.4 x 17 x 2.4 mm
For more information about Precision Timing see
page 69.

LEA-6R module
u-blox 6 GPS receiver with Dead Reckoning
Product description
The LEA-6R provides 100% coverage, combining the
high performance u-blox 6 positioning engine with
Dead Reckoning (DR) technology. DR supplements
GPS satellite position information with heading and
distance data provided by additional sensors. When GPS
satellites are out of sight, location is extrapolated using
distance and angle information from the sensors.
DR enables accurate navigation even in locations with
poor or absent GPS signals such as tunnels, indoor
parking facilities and deep urban canyons. In addition,
DR effectively eliminates the impact of multipath
effects in urban canyon environments. This makes the
LEA-6R the ideal solution for applications requiring
accurate, reliable positioning, all of the time.

UBX-G0011
u-blox RF front-end chip for Capture & Process
Product description
The UBX-G0011 is u-blox’ first choice RF chip when it
comes to partner hardware for Capture & Process.
Featuring high RF performance in terms of sensitivity
and noise figure, the UBX-G0011 enables simple
technical realisation of Capture & Process while keeping
the cost of integration low.
In addition to the instantaneous GPS data capture,
u-blox’ Capture & Process technology enables UBXG0011 to be only operated during the short interval of
GPS data capture, providing additional battery savings.
Last but not least, the SPI interface makes integration
and configuration of UBX-G0011 simple.

u-blox‘ patented Capture & Process
technology records your position anywhere, instantly
AssistNow global online service for accelerated GPS
GPS users expect instant position information. During
coldstart conditions, this is often not possible because
at least four satellites must be identified, and their
complete orbital position data, called Ephemeris,
received. Due to the low data rate of satellite signals
(only 50 baud!) together with adverse geographical
or city conditions, downloads from satellites can take
minutes, or even fail altogether.
Assisted GPS (A‑GPS) accelerates calculation of position
by instantly delivering the necessary satellite data such
as Ephemeris, Almanac, accurate time and satellite
status to GPS receivers via wireless networks or the
Internet. The aiding data enables a GPS receiver to
compute a position within seconds, even under poor
signal conditions.
Based on information gathered from its global network
of satellite tracking stations, u-blox offers AssistNow
service to its customers worldwide based on a highly
reliable online AssistNow Root Server. Both online and
offline option are available.

u-blox’ unique, patented Capture & Process solution gives your products two market-leading advantages:
the ability to capture GPS position data instantly, while supporting weeks or even months of battery operation.
YUMA
Objective Specification
Software and service for Capture & Process
Product description
Antenna
Capture & Process is u-blox’ proprietary software GPS
technology that solves the 2 main problems faced by
real-time GPS. The solution is:
• Fast, position capture in 0.2 seconds
• Extremely low-power allowing weeks or months of
battery life
Capture Device
Capture & Process achieves these results in two steps:
1.Capture raw GPS signal data immediately
2.Process it for a position fix at a convenient later time (on a PC or Mac)
YUMA is the software and service component of
u-blox’ Capture & Process technology which enables
this performance. A YUMA enabled device incorporates
a u-blox GPS receiver and uses this to take a number of
raw GPS data captures, each only a fraction of a second
long.

GPS Captures
Later, the stored captures are passed to the YUMA
Software GPS Engine which processes them to obtain
position fixes.
The process is enabled by accessing additional satellite
ephemeris data supplied over the Internet by the YUMA
Historic Assistance Service provided by u-blox. YUMA
is particularly useful for camera equipment where
instantaneous photo geotagging capability with low
power consumption is critical.

AssistNow
u-blox Assisted-GPS services
The challenge of stand-alone GPS
GPS users expect instant
position information. With
standard GPS this is often
not possible because at
least four satellites must be
identified, and their complete
orbital position data, called
Ephemeris, received. Due to
the low speed of satellite signals (only 50 baud!) and
adverse city or geographical conditions, downloads
from satellites can take minutes, or even fail altogether.
With AssistNow Offline, GPS users can benefit from
A-GPS while offline. Simply download differential almanac
correction data in advance from the Internet or wireless
network when convenient and store it in local memory.
Based on extrapolation of satellite position, the service
requires no connectivity at subsequent system start-up.
Users can enjoy instant positioning, even when no mobile
network is available.
AssistNow A-GPS
AssistNow is u-blox’ end-to-end A‑GPS service which
boosts acquisition performance for GPS end products
with or without network connectivity. AssistNow is
available in Online and Offline versions which can either
be used alone or in combination.
AssistNow requires no additional hardware and
generates virtually no CPU load. The system is very easy
to integrate: it can be installed and operational within
a day.
u-blox provides data files with corrections valid from 1 to
14 days. The size of these files, from 3 kB up to 90 kB,
increases with the length of the prediction period. Regular
updates help to ensure a high level of position accuracy.
Standard and guaranteed QoS options
AssistNow data is maintained in real-time on u-blox
AssistNow servers accessible via the Internet. For besteffort applications, u-blox provides AssistNow Standard
free-of-charge to its customers. For applications
requiring a guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS),
u-blox provides AssistNow Premium which provides
guaranteed service availability 24/7 based on a service
level agreement.
Benefits of AssistNow
With AssistNow Online, a GPS device with fixed or
mobile network connectivity accesses and downloads
assistance data from u-blox’ Global Reference Network
at system start-up via the Internet. The system runs on
standard mobile networks, no special arrangements
with mobile network operators are needed. The service
works on all standard mobile communication networks
that support Internet access, including GPRS, UMTS
and Wireless LAN. u-blox only sends ephemeris data
for those satellites currently visible to the mobile device
requesting the data, thus minimizing the amount of
data transferred.
Page 38 | Products
• Fast Time-To-First-Fix, even under poor signal
conditions
• Global coverage, network operator independent
• No additional hardware required
• Free best-effort service
• Guaranteed QoS option for premium customers
• Low CPU load
• Available for all u-blox GPS receivers
• Easy to install and use
• AssistNow client firmware pre-embedded in u-blox
wireless transceiver modules LEON and LUCY
The AssistNow Global Reference Network is u-blox’
worldwide network of GPS receivers. They gather
satellite information such as ephemeris, almanac,
satellite health and status and forward the data to
u-blox’ AssistNow Root Server.
The AssistNow Root Server collects the data from the
Global Reference Network, calculates the assistance
data and handles data requests originating from mobile
terminals or other devices. On request, the root server
generates the data packets and transmits them either
directly to the customer’s terminal, mobile device or to
a Proxy Server.
An optional Proxy Server set-up (implemented by
the customer) enables individual requests from mobile
terminals to be locally handled by the customer’s
Proxy Server. This server receives regular aiding data
information updates from the u-blox AssistNow Root
Server, ensuring that up-to-date information is available
to user terminals when requested.
This solution is scalable and gives the customer full
control and data privacy. Customers can use their
communication link of choice for the communication
between the user terminals and the server.
In the Mobile Terminal microcontroller resides a very
simple piece of software. This provides communication
with the root or proxy server over a network and
transfers data to the GPS receiver via UART, USB, SPI or
I2C interfaces.

EVK-CK
Capture & Process evaluation kit
Product description
Experience Capture & Process in just 4 simple steps
Capture & Process is u-blox’ market-proven software
GPS technology that solves the 2 main problems faced
by realtime GPS: the solution is ultra-fast, capturing
a position in 0.2 seconds, and extremely low-power,
allowing weeks or months of battery life. Capture &
Process achieves these results in two simple steps:
1.Charge the KATO by connecting it to a PC via the
USB cable
2.During charging, run the Snappr software to
configure the device for initial use
3.Go outside and capture locations, either by pressing
the ‘Capture’ button or simply by taking photos with
the KATO attached to a camera
4.Reconnect the KATO to the PC, run Snappr and press
‘Process’ to see your captured locations
1. Capture raw GPS signal data immediately,
2. Process it to obtain a position fix at a
convenient later time (on a PC or Mac)
The EVK-CK is a comprehensive kit designed to make
evaluation of u-blox’ Capture & Process (C&P)
technology simple and enjoyable. The kit includes a
KATO capture device which is used to capture and store
raw GPS data. KATO is particularly effective in photo
geotagging applications and can be attached to a
camera via a hotshoe connector, in which case a
capture is taken automatically with every photograph.
Alternatively, KATO can be used standalone as an
ultra-low-power GPS logger. KATO capture device works stand-alone as an ultra low-power GPS
logger or with a digital camera for photo geotagging.
Sony / Konica / Minolta adapters included.
EVK-CK includes two software applications for
processing the captures:
• Snappr: u-blox’ technical evaluation software for the
PC which displays locations on a map and provides
information about the received GPS satellite signals.
• Taggr: a photo geotagging application for PC or Mac
which demonstrates how commercial applications
can be built on top of Capture & Process.
Both applications are based on u-blox’ YUMA API. This
is the interface to the YUMA software GPS processing
engine and Historic Assistance Service, which are at the
heart of Capture & Process.
Snappr technical evaluation software
Highlights
• KATO capture device
• Can be used as a standalone data logger or
attached to a camera hot-shoe for photo geotagging
• Captures locations in 0.2 s
• Stores up to 2000 captures
• Battery life of weeks/months
• Recharged via USB
• Snappr technical evaluation application (PC)
• Taggr photo geotagging application (PC or Mac)
Supported platforms
Snappr: Windows XP (SP2), Vista (SP1) or Windows 7
Taggr: Windows XP (SP2), Vista (SP1), Windows 7 or

Anti-Jamming
Advanced interference suppression
A main reason that jamming is an issue with any GPS
receiver is that the signals coming from GPS satellites
are very weak. Satellites transmit with a power output
of roughly 30 W and are 20,000 km above us. Just
imagine: how much strength would the signal with the
strength of a weak light bulb have after traveling that
distance?
In fact, a typical signal, when acquired outdoors with
open sky, is in the range of –120 dBm (1 x 10–15 W),
and moving inside a normal residential building can add
20 or 30 dB of attenuation.
In addition to these weak signals, GPS receivers must
also deal with unintentional jamming due to noise
generated in the electrical world around them.
Common sources of jamming signals are clock circuits
or switching power supplies which are in many
electronic devices you purchase today. Even displays
generate noise due to their driver circuitry and scan
rates. For example, a smartphone can generate noise
from its display, WLAN port and Bluetooth interface. A
mobile TV can also create heavy interference. There is
also considerable potential for interference in cars – not
only from the electronic engine controls but also from
dashboard electronics and entertainment systems.
To ensure that their GPS systems provide the optimal
functionality, engineers of any consumer appliances
incorporating GPS capabilities should not only follow
good engineering practices, they should also select
components designed to mitigate these jamming
effects. The proper antenna is certainly one aspect to
keep in mind, but engineers should also be aware that
the abilities of individual GPS receiver chipsets vary
widely in their ability to counteract jamming signals.
The u-blox solution
All u-blox GPS receivers achieve best-in-class performance
in noisy environments through an advanced, proprietary
adaptive digital filtering technology which actively
suppresses interference. This solution has been proven
in overcoming interfering signals up to 25 dBm stronger
than conventional GPS receivers can withstand. The
result is the most sensitive and reliable GPS receiver
technology on the market.
In addition to extremely weak satellite signals, GPS receivers must
deal with a wide range of jamming signals
u-blox’ proprietary Anti-Jamming technology gives GPS
equipment manufacturers the following benefits:
• Delivers consistent GPS operation in noisy urban
environments and indoors, well past the point where
conventional systems fail
• Compatible with small, low cost antennas
• Allows embedding of the GPS receiver in close
proximity to RF noise sources: in mobile phones,
mobile computers, PNDs, and automotive dashboards
• Small surface mount GPS receiver modules requiring
little space
• Tested, off-the-shelf solutions
• Cost-effective

Capture & Process
The ultimate geotagging solution
Capture & Process for geotagging applications
u-blox’ patented GPS Capture & Process technology
enables mobile products to instantly capture a location
using just a few millijoules of power. This is especially
attractive for applications such as photo geotagging for
cameras and camera accessories where users just want
to point and shoot, and not waste precious time and
battery power waiting for a conventional GPS position
fix. The concept can easily be extended to ultra-low
power position loggers that can record position data for
months without recharging.
How it works
In contrast to real-time GPS receivers which can take
an unacceptably long time to establish a position fix,
GPS Capture & Process captures location data in a
fraction of a second. It achieves this by separating the
GPS signal capture and subsequent processing into two
distinct steps:
• Capture
the raw output of an embedded GPS front-end is
digitally captured and stored locally, for example in a
camera’s memory each time a photo is taken.
• Process
when photos are offloaded from the camera, so are
the raw GPS data captures. u-blox’ YUMA software
for PC or Mac software quickly processes the data to
obtain position fixes. It is assisted in this task by the u-blox’ satellite orbit data Internet service.
The benefits to camera and logger manufacturers
are clear
• Ultra-fast location capture
GPS signal data is captured on-demand in less than
200 ms – no waiting for acquisition of satellite orbital
data necessary. Point and shoot performance!
Example of Capture & Process geotagging results

• Fast PC processing
geotagging and reverse-geocoding software and
online service is optimized for Windows (XP, Vista
and 7) and Mac and can typically compute a position
fix from a capture in 0.4 s per photo.

Wireless and GPS convergence
Innovation through combined technologies
u-blox offers embedded semiconductors, software,
services and reference designs to support end-products
that combine 2G/3.5G wireless and GPS technologies
to capitalize on the converged technologies.
Fleet and asset management systems
As early adopters of converged
wireless/GPS applications, fleet
management systems based on u-blox
technology are deployed worldwide
for tracking of vehicle fleets such
as taxis, trucks and public transportation to report
position, monitor vehicle status, routes as well as driver
behavior.
Accelerated positioning via assisted GPS (A-GPS)
By pairing a parallel wireless communications channel
with a GPS receiver, satellite positional data can be
transmitted over wireless networks to significantly
accelerate position fix. u-blox supports A-GPS
through its globally available AssistNow online service
(see page 38).
Personal locators
The latest personal locators combine
GPS and GSM connectivity to
provide real-time tracking of palmsized devices anywhere in the world
there is mobile phone coverage. The
device’s location can be viewed in
real-time via an Internet “dashboard” to not only report
where your children and pets are on-demand, but even
how fast your teenagers are driving your car (velocity
information is also available via GPS!).
Location Based Services for notebooks/netbooks
Location-awareness capability is built into Microsoft’s
Windows 7 operating system through a specially
developed “Sensor and Location
Platform” which is supported by u-blox.
The platform enables new
location based services such as:
• What is around me? (i.e. shops, restaurants, ATMs,
public transportation, tourist information, police)
• How do I get there? Turn by turn directions
• Who is around me? (friends, family, proximity dating)
Road pricing
With the upcoming launch of the European Electronic
Toll Service (EETS) throughout Europe, drivers will be
able to easily pay tolls throughout the whole European
Union (EU) based on road usage. Based on converged
wireless and GPS technologies, EETS will be available on
all infrastructures in the EU such as motorways, tunnels
(requires dead-reckoning GPS, see page 66) and bridges
where toll can be paid using on-board equipment.
u-blox’ GPS/wireless solutions
Because of the exciting and numerous applications
for converged GSM/UMTS/GPS technologies, u-blox
has implemented special features in its wireless
module families LEON and LUCY to ease the design
effort required for the integration of GSM and UMTS
technologies with GPS. This includes a single interface
to communicate with both wireless and GPS modules
as well as embedded A-GPS client to accelerate
Time-To-First-Fix (seconds, not minutes). u-blox also
offers complete evaluation kits and reference designs
for converged wireless and GPS applications (see
pages 57-59).

Dead Reckoning
Never lose track of where you are
GPS positioning works well when at least four satellites
are within a GPS receiver’s line-of-sight. However, in
urban environments where the accuracy of GPS
navigation is crucial, the view to the sky is often
obstructed, or high-rise buildings reflect GPS signals
causing severe multipath effects, degrading the quality
of GPS. In tunnels or underground parking garages,
GPS positioning may not work at all.
traveled) and the gyroscope properties without the
need for user intervention. Calibration is achieved with
a short drive under good GPS reception conditions.
Dead Reckoning (DR) enables 100 % road coverage in
challenging city environments by supplementing GPS
positioning with heading and distance data provided by
sensors. Sensors can be directly connected to the GPS
receiver or the sensor readings can be obtained through
the vehicle data bus. When GPS satellites are out of
sight, GPS location is extrapolated using distance and
angle information from the sensors. This results in
accurate positioning even when the GPS signal is
impaired or absent.
DR using gyroscope and tachometer solution is available
with u-blox’LEA-6R GPS receiver module (see page 22).
100% Coverage through dead reckoning
The principles of Dead Reckoning (DR) navigation
address this problem based on two pieces of
information:
• Absolute GPS position fix is required as starting point
• Incremental calculation of future position can be
extrapolated based on:
• Distance traveled since last known position
• Turn rate (angular change)
DR using gyroscope and tachometer
Using a gyroscope and odometer pulses from a
tachometer make this solution independent of the
vehicle data bus and therefore ideal for after-market
applications.
Depending on the quality of GPS signals available, the
DR algorithm accurately computes the following
positions by using an automatically weighted average of
GPS, turn rates and distance information. The quality
of the GPS signals and the confidence level of the DR
information determines the weighting used.
DR using individual wheel speed information
The individual wheel speed solution is ideal for
firstmount navigation systems and emergency call
boxes such as eCall because it uses information
from the vehicle data bus (e.g. the ABS system). This
solution requires a close collaboration between the car
manufacturer and the automotive component suppliers
to ensure the system identifies and accesses the relevant
sensor data. The system is a custom solution that needs
to be adapted to different car models as the type of
sensors and configurations in each car model vary.
Differences in individual wheel speeds are used to
determine the vehicle’s speed and heading. This
eliminates the need for a costly gyroscope, resulting
in significant cost savings.
Using DR information in conjunction with GPS
measurements not only extends coverage to areas
without GPS reception, but also boosts position
accuracy in areas with adverse signal conditions such
as urban areas with heavy multipath effects.
DR based on individual wheel speed information is
available with selected u-blox 5 and 6 ICs and modules.

Above, you see a KickStart GPS receiver in a car glovebox performing a cold start. Despite the weak signal conditions, the receiver’s
ultra-fast weak signal acquisition enables it to establish a position
within a few seconds.
KickStart performance: GPS in glove compartment
Stolen vehicle recovery systems or asset tracking
applications have GPS receivers typically fitted in covert
locations such as inside the glove box or under car seats.
These receivers typically require special technology to
receive weaker signals and to calculate a position under
these most challenging conditions.
GPS receivers equipped with KickStart are able to calculate
a first position fix within seconds, even in the harshest
signal environments, as illustrated in the field-test above.

A GPS receiver without KickStart is still able to establish a position
but takes substantially longer to do so, due to the covert location of
the GPS receiver, which undermines signal strength.

Precision Timing
Low-cost, worldwide clock synchronization
Using GPS synchronization to provide a low-cost
precision reference clock has application in numerous
distributed computer and telecom systems. PC clocks in
particular are notoriously inaccurate due to variations
in crystal tolerance, calibration and temperature effects
resulting in clock drift of many seconds per day. For
time-critical applications such as globally-linked financial
systems, mobile base-station networks, and power
switching equipment, clock error can have catastrophic
results.
The histogram below shows the time accuracy frequency
distribution of the LEA-6T, measured over 24 hours.
Here is where GPS satellite synchronization provides
a convenient and cost-effective solution for clock
accuracy down to 15 billionths of a second.
u-blox’ GPS clock synchronization technology allows
globally distributed computer and telecom systems
to synchronize their clocks continuously and costeffectively even in the remotest of locations:
• Achieves location-independent clock synchronization
even when only 1 satellite is in view
• Delivers high and continuous accuracy to within 15
nanoseconds based on the highly-precise GPS atomic clock time defined and maintained by the US DoD
• Dual precision time pulse outputs (e.g. 1 PPS and
10 MHz) reduces requirement for external
components allowing for significant BOM savings
Time offset (in nanoseconds)
For this test, the GPS receiver was placed on a building
rooftop and its accuracy was measured without
compensating the quantization error. The graph
illustrates the very low standard deviation and maximal
error of u-blox timing receivers.

Packaging
Chips and modules are moisture-sensitive devices.
When reflow soldering, these products must be
moisture-free to avoid defects that can arise under the
hot temperatures used by reflow soldering machines.
When soldering by hand with a soldering iron, moisture
levels are not an issue.
Chips and chipsets
u-blox delivers chips packed into reels which are, in
turn, packed into ESD (Electrostatic Sensitive Device)
and moisture-shielding bags. Sample deliveries are
packed onto trays and are also packaged into ESD and
moisture-shielding bags.
Modules
Modules come in 100 unit or 250 unit reels, depending
on the module. The reels are dry-sealed into ESD and
moisture-shielding bags that come with detailed
care instructions about moisture sensitivity levels and
maximum factory floor times. Sample quantities (of less
than 100 or 250 units, typically soldered by hand) are
shipped in ESD-protected cartons but are not moistureprotected as moisture levels are not an issue when
