#85 Sep 2010 ALOHA, Best swell – best forgotten...... Will September be remembered for the wave that almost was? 4 weekends of almost flat East Coast, and huge and out of control West coast. Such a contrast to last September, when almost every day was surfable on the East or West coast, (and some days – both). It just proves how surf cannot be relied upon by month and why surfers need to be able to move at a moments notice to catch the swell or miss out completely. Perhaps this means the North might finally get waves over the Christmas break…now that would be something!! Still, we can’t complain too much about this year as looking over this years club days (comps), we did score pretty consistent swell conditions at our local breaks; interestingly we didn’t have one West coast comp this year. Don’t forget to celebrate the year that th was at our Prizegiving night coming up on the 16 October at the Orewa Surf Club. Top band, top prizes and a great night guaranteed. Conditions were extremely challenging, with 1-2ft waves (the odd 3ft set as the day progressed) and an onshore Nor-east wind - a multiple peak contest situation. With many of NZ's top longboarders present at the event however, there was an amazing display of surfing put on. Despite the poor weather conditions, the vibe of the day was overwhelmingly positive. The contest provided a great opportunity for a catch up, with longboarders having travelled from as far afield as Dunedin, Gisborne and Wanganui - a fantastic turn out from the longboarding community. Many kept their hands warm by the BBQ put on to help NZ Surfing Team representative Thomas Kibblewhite get to the ISA World Surfing Games taking place in Peru later this year. Owen Michael Ultimately, it was Michael Burling (Wanganui) that took out first place of the Fletcher Construction Open Mens division, with a powerful and fluid display of surfing. After being announced as the winner at the formal prize giving, Burling went on to say that he intended to take a 3 year break from competitive surfing and was "really happy to go out with a bang". The official results were as follows: Fletcher Construction Opens Mens: 1st: Michael Burling (Wanganui) 2nd: Owen Barnes (Mt. Maunganui) 3rd: Dylan Barnfield (Ohope) 4th: Kelly Ryan (Gisborne) SONY Open Womens: 1st: Belinda Goodwin (Raglan) 2nd: Mischa Davis (Piha) 3rd: Shelley Jones (Orewa) 4th: Hannah Howard (Orewa) Michael with artist Steve Hoskin Sanuk Over 50's: 1st: Michael Thompson (Raglan) 2nd: Paul Browne (Orewa) 3rd: Rupert Newbold (Whangerei) 4th: Rob Bayes (Orewa) Brownie Skull Candy Under 18's: 1st: Branko Vela (Takapuna) 3rd: Blake Zuill (Red Beach) 2nd: Jae Kilgour (St. Clair) 4th: Sam Haven (Muriwai) TK 3 The Morris Surfboard Charity Raffle was won by Paul (Brownie) Browne who took home a brand new 9ft Morris Surfboard. A total of $370 was raised and will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust. Time to invent a new colour – black? Check out wind warning surrounds entire NZ !! the size of that swell line from Tasmania to Cape Reinga Shoreline wave height 12 metres!!! Swell period 16 seconds!!!! 5 Currumbin Sessions By Club member Quentin Bright First light, spring morning. The early rising crew is on it – the usual mix of long boarders, stand up paddle boarders, a goat boat or two and the keen groms paddling like dogs on their short-boards! The sun beams in from the East over and through the back of the wave, making the waist to mid chest high faces look opaque rather than solid; forcing the riders to squint as they look for the ‘one’. And there is a nice little ground swell from the North; a nice right hander and a more fickle left. On the sets, at least four or five surfers paddle for each wave…but it’s a mellow crowd, full of banter, nods of recognition, everybody pretty relaxed and why wouldn’t they be – in these conditions the spot has enough for everyone – it’s a good day on the Bar. BUT, this is not our Bar, not Orewa, not even New Zealand! This is Currumbin Alley, one of the better waves on this stretch of the Gold Coast, with some fun banks on small days and able to hold a pretty solid wave on bigger days in these parts due to the groynes and lengthy sand banks. I’m sitting out here on one of four days I will ride this place, surfing it five times in all during my week long stay. It’s a special place: an easy walk from my apartment at Currumbin Sands and I can see the break from my balcony. I’m riding a special board too – a Sunova Hangman. It’s one of two 9’ Sunova boards I’ve borrowed off Jim, a mate from NZ who now lives down the road in Tugun, the other being the Pro Longboard. Both draw plenty of comments from other surfers and SUP riders…I won’t bore you with drooling over them in print, you can check here to see why they’re sharp www.sunovasurfboards.com. Despite mostly riding shortboards in his 30 odd years of surfing, Jim takes the Sunovas out at Burleigh, Snapper and Greenmount on 6ft days because he reckons he can get into the wave ahead of the short boarders. Not just reckon either, he does! He says he got a bit of stick at first from a few but when he showed them a clean pair of heels - by going vertical on the face with the Pro! - well, no one said anything much anymore other than “wow, where do I get me one of those!” (Btw, just an aside to let you know the ex-pat doesn’t get it all his own way, Bob McTavish took Jim out with him at Lennox on a 8ft day a year or so back - and dropped in him!) I never got the opportunity to ride the Sunovas on a bigger day on the Goldy as the swell kept around the waist high mark for the whole week as it is wont to do in these parts … and I’m still learning to ride and do stuff anyway but I can see why Jim takes em out at Snapper! On my second to last day on the Goldy, having gotten up at 5.30am to beat the weekend crowd (it was 7.30am to my body clock anyway so no worries for me!) the swell was still small so we went looking for the best ride on the bottom tide. We took the Sunovas for a ride to Duranbah and all the way back pic Tim McKenna 6 to the Alley. We checked out pretty much every spot in between and I got shown a few spots I’d never heard. This was some additional gold for me. These are places the locals go when the overseas blow-ins (like me!) are round during the WT events and during their (mostly Northern Hemisphere) holiday seasons. Now you’re probably thinking there are no places as good and consistent as Burleigh or Kirra or Snapper or Greenmount or even The Alley but by golly, you’d be wrong’ish’! If you are on the Gold Coast in Feb/ March/April or when the blow ins from Germany, Brazil and, er, England etc., are making each wave a round table for knight riders, do a Taranaki! By which I (as an ex-pat Taranakian) mean, check out the end of a few roads leading down to, or along, the sea front anywhere between D’bah and Broadbeach, pic by Michael Dawes aside from the obvious beaches. You may be pleasantly surprised. What I was shown certainly gave me the notion to explore further on any future trips. I would like to be more specific in print but I also want to be able to ride, still breathing, on my next Goldy wave. If you haven’t got a contact there yourself, ask a friendly local at The Alley or pose a quiet, respectful question at one of the long boarder friendly surf shops. This was followed by a letter to the editor 17 June by Mr B Smith which questioned the validity of the conclusions in the previous article. Because of public interest, the Whangamata harbour committee requested WRC to send over a scientist to explain the information contained in the maps printed with the article. Last Monday the report from regional council arrived for presentation to the Harbour Committee but with no council “expert” to present it. The council rooms were full with committee members, and in the gallery, mature surfers. Luckily for all those in attendance, one of the people present in the public gallery was Dr Shaw Mead, a world expert in Bathymetrics and Morphology. He was able to add to the presentation and explain how the sand had indeed changed on the Bar, in a way that has negatively affected wave quality, and showed how this was so by interpreting the council survey maps along with two of his own. His presentation was clear and everyone could see and understand why the wave quality had deteriorated. The reason and the remedy were not discussed, as it was better for everyone to go away and think about the information received. At the community forum on Saturday 18th, Community Board chair Peter Kerr and WRC representative Simon Friar took it as read that that the bar was broken, when I raised the issue and asked the community for help. The repair of our community’s iconic Bar will be complex, and the whole situation will be exacerbated in the near future, when we have up to 6,000m3 of dredged sand placed on the beach just west of the wharf and up to 35 Ha of mangroves cleared. Paul Shanks, Whangamata 9 Saving Waves: Coastal Planning & Surf Breaks A lecture by Paul Shanks and Matt Skellern 26 October 2010 6pm Venue: Design Lecture Theatre, NICAI Conference Centre, 22 Symonds St. Paul Shanks won the Ministry for the Environment Green Ribbon in 2006, for community leadership in Whangamata. Since then, Paul has taken a lead in saving New Zealand’s greatest surfing asset, its waves. From an international perspective, New Zealand is innovating in the ways it proposes to protect its world class surf breaks. Surfer and planner Matt Skellern contributes toward surf break protection alongside other surfers with backgrounds in planning, coastal science, oceanography, social science, law, economics along with perspectives from the surfing community and surfing industry. Globally, surfers have been protesting the extinction of quality surf breaks for years. However, in December 2008, surf break protection was formalised through the World Heritage Surf Break movement based on the UNESCO model of World Heritage Sites. Following a similar trend, New Zealanders adopted the legal process to protect the world class surf breaks in Aotearoa. Paul and Matt’s presentation aims to raise awareness of surf break protection at home and abroad, identifying potential issues for future ocean planning. This Saving Waves lecture is kindly supported by the New Zealand Planning Institute and New Zealand Coastal Society. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Developer takes Te Arai battle to court By TIM HUNTER - BusinessDay.co.nz Property developer John Darby is battling on with plans to create a coastal subdivision at Te Arai beach south of Mangawhai Heads, after it was blocked by Rodney District Council last year. While objectors applauded the council move, the stalled development has left local Maori and a who's who of wealthy investors fuming over its failure to repay millions loaned to the project. In an attempt to force a council rethink, Darby's company Te Arai Coastal Lands sought a judicial review and this week the process got under way at the High Court. Judicial review allows someone affected by the exercise of statutory power, such as a council planning decision, to challenge it in the High Court on grounds of procedural failure, illegality or irrationality. The development on 616ha owned by Te Arai Coastal Lands was originally planned to involve 1400 dwellings, along with a boutique thermal spa, golf course, visitor facilities and coastal park and campground. It was later scaled back to 850 and then 180 homes. In rejecting the company's proposed plan change, the council said the development's adverse effects could not be mitigated without affecting the area's unique character. And as the council was about to adopt a new district plan, it also withdrew a variation it had drawn up to potentially accommodate Mr Darby's proposal under the new plan. The council said it planned to defend its position in court. Meanwhile the ongoing uncertainty has cut off a major source of income for the Northland hapu of Ngati Whatua - Te Uri o Hau - which has an interest in the development after acquiring land at Te Arai as part of a $15 million Waitangi Treaty settlement in 2002. As well as owning 25 per cent of Te Arai Coastal Lands, the hapu is owed $9m by the company and has not received its annual interest of $720,000 since 2008. A further sum, understood to be between $8m and $15m, is owed to a number of private investors, many of them friends of Darby and his business partner George Kerr, from a previous issue of bonds and equity warrants. In a separate planning battle, Darby is seeking permission to create 20 residential properties at New Chums Beach in the Coromandel, ranked in the top 20 beaches in the world in 2006 by The Observer newspaper. 10 From: [email protected] Subject: Surfbreak Protection Latest News Date: Tue, 21 Sep 2010 21:33:32 +1200 Dear Surfbreak members and supporters, For your interest, the following news: 1) A not to be missed lecture at Auckland University by Matt Skellern and Paul Shanks, please put in your diary (flyer above): 2) Concern for the Whangamata Bar is growing.
