Surfrider Ventura Chapter Snippet
If you have historically accessed the Faria Beach through what used to be an empty lot, you may be able to help
maintain public access in that area.
See the California Coastal Commission website: !http://www.coastal.ca.gov/access/prc-access.html
The loss of historical access and recreational sites funnels a growing population into fewer and
fewer areas and can reduce the range of uses as well. Public participation is critical to establishing
the right to continued public use.
You can help in our research by reviewing the following list of access locations currently under
study by the Commission. Please click to link to download the graphics and questionnaires for
Faria Beach.
http://www.coastal.ca.gov/access/Faria_Beach_Prescriptive_Rights_Survey.pdf
What is a public prescriptive right of access?
Along the California coast the general public has historically used numerous coastal areas. Trails
to the beach, informal parking areas, beaches, and bluff tops have provided recreational
opportunities for hiking, picnicking, fishing, swimming, surfing, diving, viewing and nature study.
California law provides that under certain conditions, long term public access across private
property may result in the establishment of a permanent public easement. This is called a public
prescriptive right of access.

“Do the Tour” Scavenger Hunt... Win a $10 Gift Certificate
Here’s the deal...try to determine the following local spots from the clues below. Take a picture of yourself at each
break (make sure there’s enough background so Ed. can tell where you are) and send pictures to
[email protected], first one to do so wins a prize.
spot 1: Fast and strong when it’s good, take a bike ride where the parking lot ends to surf this spot
spot 2: Usually a fun crowd with rights and lefts a flowin’, this break hosted the Ventura Surf Club contest that raised
over $5,000 in September.
spot 3: Protected from most winds this spot is very reliable and often a top choice for many.
spot 4: Corral your post surf hunger on Thompson at this local eatery.

Think surfing is fun? Try body surfing. A few
weeks back Patagonia hosted a premiere of “Come
Hell or High Water,” a new film directed by Keith
Malloy. Surfer Keith Malloy's movie about his passion
for bodysurfing: "It's about taking a breath, and
kicking your feet, in the big blue sea … come hell or
high water."
A family friendly environment with free beers,
popcorn, and great music set the scene. Rows and rows
of lawn chairs and blankets packed the parking lot.
Old and young watched as body surfers around the
world connected with the ocean. Surfer or not, the
crowd loved it and left appreciating the ocean’s power
and beauty.
Keeping with the ocean theme of the evening,
the Plastic Pollution Coalition gave a speech how to
reduce and reuse plastics so that generations to come
may experience the same pleasures in the ocean as we
do.
Ending thoughts: the ocean is basically super
awesome and we should all go play in it. So much
happiness comes from the ocean, so we should take
better care of her.

V ENTURA S URF C LUB : MEET A MEMB ER
Meet Will Jensen Interview with Andy Sassen
How long have up been surfing? Steadily for about 10 years now.
Almost as long as I've lived in Ventura. As a young kid my cousins would
take me with them down to Encinitas and we'd camp for weeks at a time.
Stonesteps was my first wave. Many years of bodyboarding prior to
moving to Ventura, mostly down In Malibu at Westward Beach.
What is your favorite thing about surfing? Every aspect of surfing is
my favorite thing. Talking about it. Putting my board on the rack of my
bike and riding the path up to the Cove. Surfing with my friends. Having a
cold beer with the boys after a good surf on a warm day. When I'm riding
my bike back to the house I've always got the biggest smile on my face
because I'm the happiest guy in the world and I live in paradise. Surfing
makes me smile and giggle like a little
kid.
Who is your favorite surfer? So
many I can't count. I really mean that
because I love to watch people surf and
my favorite surfer can be anyone.
Sometime I think watching is almost as
fun as surfing itself. Maybe my favorite
surfer is you!
Can you do your own ding repair?
I can and I've become pretty good.
Started doing my own out of necessity
and that developed into doing friends

boards for a minimal cost, ( 30 pack of Coors Original!), and now people
show up with boards out of the blue because they see me out front of my
house working. If yes, most gnarly one...Most gnarly one would be one
of my boards. When I met my girlfriend, I was getting out of the water
after a good surf. She walked up and introduced herself and just then my
board literally flew out of my arms and landed about fifteen feet away. I
can't even understand how it happened. Just crushedit. To this day we joke
about it.
Most memorable wave...A few years ago I did a dawn patrol and I
made it out before the sun came up. Just and absolutely beautiful morning.
This wave came just for me from a thousand miles away. It lined up just
beautifully and I got that wave from the pay parking lot to the stairs out
front of Mike and Karen Smith's. About halfway through the wave I was
laughing so hard because it was just so insane. A little overhead and utterly
glassy. I didn't stop smiling for about three days.
What stokes you...My mom! She's my best friend.
What do you like most on your toast?
Mayo, sliced home grown tomatoes with pepper on top. Can't beat that!

attitude.

Another Excuse to Surf
Ken McAlpine
More and more studies are touting the benefits of
vitamin D; hence the National Academy of Sciences
recently boosted its recommended daily allowance
from 200 international units to 600IU. A new study has
concluded that dramatically higher levels of vitamin D
may help fight cancer and other chronic diseases. You
could take a supplement, but what fun is that?
According to studies, twenty minutes of sun, three
times a week, will give you the vitamin D you need.

When Shane Dorian nearly drowned at Mavericks after a
prolonged hold-down, Dorian’s friend Hub Hubbard,
who works in Billabong’s design department, teamed
with designers to produce the V1 Vertical Ascent Wetsuit.
You get pounded down. You pull the rip cord that inflates
the airbag-like sack that’s part of the suit. Up you go.
No design yet for the next wave of the set.

LONE RANGER
"
Leslie Brodie
There really is surf in Texas. For 3 years, I have had this email penpal who lives and surfs in
the Corpus Christi area and he has sent these photos. The first 2 are from Port Aransas surf
break and the others, I am not sure. I know that Brad surfs a place called Bob Hall Pier
pretty regularly.
ABOVE: Lone surfer cowboys of Corpus Christi, Texas.
Morning ranch work...not for these guys. Apparently the “Lone Star” state
maybe known for more than country music and cowboys. The waves
pictured are more appealing than a bucking bronco and a good ole Texas
BBQ to these local Texas surfers...and look pretty fun by any California
surfer’s standards.

The Dawn Patrol -Mathew Faust
Under cover of night they come,
One by one - filling empty parking places,
they play like creatures from the sea, happy and content to
be
Highly coveted, empty parking places.
home at last - rejuvenated, refreshed, released
from the earthly constrictions that limited space and time.
With pick up beds pointing at the dark horizon
!
in anticipation of an iridescent dawn,
They fly - they soar - dive and climb, they walk on water and
on air.
sleepy eyes squinting – straining to see the wave - now
With style and grace they do not obstruct or even
gone,
complement
the wave which has yet to come.
the morning tide – more than that – much more …
!
They are at the very heart of it.
Day after day – week after week – year after year
the dawn patrol arrives,
ever changing yet always the same,
long ago she had won their hearts, completely.
Amongst dark smiling faces secret hand shakes are
exchanged
while each in his own time sheds flannel for rubbery black
skin.
Some with shoes and others not, they fade into the darkness
and drop into the ocean.
As the dawn gloriously breaks through winters’ fog,
under a Maxfield Parish sky come to life,
