Treatments with replacement of damaged tissue with metal/plastic components
In the last five years,
several different levels
of replacement-type
surgeries have been
gaining popularity.
These include
resurfacing, partial
replacements and
total replacements.
• Resurfacings replace damaged cartilage or “potholes”
with metal and/or plastic
components and are often
performed arthroscopically
through small incisions with
very short recovery times.
These serve to smooth out
painful damaged surfaces
where small areas are damaged, but surrounding tissue is
very normal. They are available for the shoulder, elbow,
hip, knee, ankle and even the
great toe.
• Partial Replacements
are often times less invasive
than total replacements and
often mean a faster return to
normal function in situations
where the damage to sections
of joints is extensive, but other
portions of the joint are
normal. These surgeries
are most prevalent in the
shoulder, hip and knee
and are often conducted
as same-day procedures.
In the knee, it is not
uncommon for patients to
return to work 2-3 weeks
after a partial replacement.
It involves less removal
of tissue through smaller
incisions, making the
recovery much faster.

TEAM APPROACH
We encourage you to become part of
your healing process by asking questions and actively participating in you
doctor’s instructions. Your confidence
and trust in your doctor will ultimately
lead to a quicker recovery period to
put you back on track with your daily
activities and pleasures. Should you
require medical treatment for orthopaedic injuries or bone disease, please give
us a call. We would be happy to be
there for you in your time of need.
surgery which also cuts down on
bleeding. This limits the need
for post-operative blood transfusions, reduces post-operative
pain and accelerates the recovery.
It has not been uncommon for
patients following the BIOMET
Signature Custom Total Knee
Replacement to come into the
office two weeks following surgery to have stitches removed,
walking without any need of a
cane or walker, previously often
having taken two months to get
to the same point.
It is my job to understand
every patient’s level of
incapacity and to guide them
towards their goals. What is
good for one person, given the
same x-ray, may be absolutely
the wrong answer for someone
else. Keeping up-to-date on
the most advanced procedures
and helping a patient to understand the pros and cons of the
options available to them, help
the doctor and patient team-up
to customize the best plan of
action and inevitably produce
the happiest patient.

• Total Joint
Replacements are
not the surgery of old.
With custom total knee
replacements, for example,
an MRI is taken of the
patient’s knee.
