How to experience local food in China
STREET FOOD: Go out there and try STREET FOOD.
Have some courage and just point at something or try
out your first Chinese words “我要这个Wô yào zhège”
meaning I want this
Eat at local Chinese restaurants: it seems obvious but might be
a bit difficult to just walk into a place where the people definitely
do not speak English and mostly do not have an English menu.
Count yourself lucky if there a nice pictures to point to or feel the
adventure when simply making crosses on a list of characters
and be excited about what food reaches your table.
Try out small, crowded little garage like restaurants. Sitting on
tiny wooden or plastic stools, menus on the wall only and in the
middle of a Chinese crowd is a great experience. In addition,
you can go there alone and enjoy a huge bowl or chicken soup
with noodles for 3-8RMB – less than 1€.
On the one hand, it is good if your Chinese is not enough to
read a Chinese menu. In that way you can simply enjoy the
taste without your head disturbing you or telling you that you
normally do not eat this.
On the other hand, you will feel very proud and excited if you are able to read
some basic food characters and can actually influence your choice of food. It
starts simply by knowing
肉 ròu meat,菜 cài vegetables, 米饭 mî fàn rice, 面条 miàn tiáo
noodles and 饺子jiâozi dumplings
Food characters are very easily learned on memrise.com with
Introductory Chinese: How to read a menu. Still it is always good to
add something, which you have never tried before or just point at the neighboring
table and order that too.
Learn about the 8 Chinese cuisines and
their specialties.
