The Train
Romare Bearden

African-American artist Romare Bearden
(1911-1988) is one of the most important
artists of the 20th century, notable for his
skill in working with a variety of media such
as collages, watercolors, oils, and prints.
Visual metaphors from his childhood in
Charlotte, North Carolina are represented in
many of his works, including The Train.
In 1975 Bearden produced the print The
Train, and at that time it was considered
one of the ten most important prints. Creating this piece, Bearden reused a 1964 collage, but also added new textures and colors by using mesh screens and photography to generate the photogravure (etching) plate. After doing
this, Bearden cut the image so colored areas could be inked separately and reassembled for the printing
process.
In this print, the train is a small black-and-white detail in the upper left. Bearden said that trains "could
take you away and could also bring you to where you were. And in the little towns, it's the black people
who live near the trains." Bearden's childhood home was located near a train trestle, and trains became a
key symbol and recurring image in his work.

Linda Adele Goodine is currently the Belk Distinguished Professor of Art at East Carolina School
of fine Art and Design.. Her entire career has been
spent as an artist-educator, exposing others to
manifestations of the classical concepts and modern interpretations of “beauty and truth,” sustaining
dialogue across disciplines and generations, and
investigating as well as pursuing the goals of social justice through education and collaboration
within her work.
This event is intended for GMA members or those interested in

Marie Hamra is an expert in fiber arts, sewing techniques,
jewelry making, knitting, and crochet. Learn a variety od fabric and mixed media collage techniques while creating a

University of Missouri-Columbia and an M.F.A in Ceramics
and Painting from East Carolina University. Pick your media!
Whether it be painting, ceramics, or collage, there is something for everyone.
