CROONERS
Le terme « crooner » (de « croon » : fredonner ») fait son apparition
aux Etats-Unis à la fin des années 20 et coïncide avec l’arrivée du
micro : les chanteurs de variété ne sont plus contraints d’adopter un
chant lyrique, l’électrification permet un chant plus personnel,
sentimental et moins sonore. Al Bowlly, Gene Austin et Rudy Vallée
sont les premiers à connaître le succès durant l’âge d’or du
phonographe et de la radio. Accompagnés par un big band, un
orchestre ou un piano, les crooners interprètent des standards du jazz
et des chansons du Great American Songbook (terme regroupant les
chansons populaires issues de Broadway et du cinéma des années 20 à
50, écrites par Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Hoagy
Carmichael…). L’hégémonie des crooners prend fin avec l’apparition
du rock ‘n’ roll dans les années 50 mais les grands noms du genre
restent des piliers de la variété américaine : Frank Sinatra, Nat King
Cole, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin… Tout d’abord qualificatif péjoratif
destiné à moquer le style suave des chanteurs de charme au public
féminin, le terme « crooner » peut être étendu à certains interprètes
de jazz, soul, pop et à des interprètes féminines. Aujourd’hui,
quelques chanteurs perpétuent le style classique, alors que de
nombreux artistes pop, rock, folk s’en inspirent ou se font crooners le
temps d’un album.
