Good luck in the DCAS Winter postal league and to Juniors
competing in the GWAS league which is both team and
individual. It’s not too late to join in, see www.gwas.org.uk for
Coaching activities
Here is a summary of just some of the coaching activities that have been going on in recent months.
An interesting and informative day with Graham and Kevin Weller from
Wales Archery was held in Exeter on Compound Equipment in November.
This was one of several excellent events for the benefit of coaches and archers
arranged by Malcolm Grant this year as CCO.
Coach education continues this winter with a Level 2 course running at St.
Austell with 11 candidates who hope to qualify in February and a Level 1
course with 12 candidates starting this month at Exmouth.
On Sunday 1st November a Junior Coaching session was held at Newquay for
the youngsters from Cornwall. There were 16 junior archers of mixed abilities,
mostly quite new to the sport. The morning was very well received by both the
youngsters and their parents. 7 coaches came along and I would like to thank
Andy Scott, Sandra Piper, Denzil Searle, Ed Wheeler, Ian Wheeler and John
Pengilley. Five of the juniors were encouraged to enter our Double Worcester Shoot on Sunday 8th and it was
the first competition for four of them and we hope the first of many. I hope that they liked our new medals!
“Judith Brelsford" – Newquay Bowmen
An open coaching day is being run at St. Austell on 10th January. It is hoped that this will be the first of many to
run throughout Devon and Cornwall and feedback from this will help us to shape future sessions.
Can you provide a venue for county coaching sessions?
We are looking for clubs that can host either an open or county squad coaching session indoors during the next
couple of months, Sundays preferred but Saturdays also considered. If you think you can help please contact
Karen Williams or Estelle Edwick with details of your venue and costs.

GWAS Intercounties
A team of 24 archers from Devon and Cornwall competed at Exeter in September in the Regional
Intercounties. With many new faces as well as plenty of regular team members, there were some good
performances on the day and Devon & Cornwall finished in second place.
The team consisted of:
Gents Recurve – Nigel Lyon, Callum Platt, Martin Rooke, Daniel Heaton, Fabricio Carlotta, David Cousins,
Andrew Hoyle
Gents Compound – Daniel Tompkins, Neil Bennett, Marcus Yeoman, Andrew Scott, Geoff Gardener
Gents Longbow – Rob Twigg, Scott Williams
Ladies Recurve – Zena Barker, Ellen Cosh, Louise Tripp, Lucy Nicholas, Karen Williams
Ladies Compound – Wendy Broom, Sharon Hill, Mollie Wix
Ladies Longbow – Sophie Woolcock, Sarah Conisbee
New Team and Squad selection
The county team will compete in two events in 2016. Each event now has a separate selection procedure and
archers need to complete selection forms to be considered.
Senior National Intercounties 2016
The above event is being held at Lilleshall National Sports Centre on the weekend of June 25th/26th and consists of
WA720 and team head to head on the Saturday and WA1440 on the Sunday.
In order to qualify for selection, you must shoot four 12 dozen rounds at a minimum distance appropriate to your
gender (These can include double WA720 rounds for this event). These rounds must be shot between the last
event (27th June 2015) and the cut off date (expected to be towards the end of May and will be confirmed when
the prospectus is published).
So that the county can get the team entry in before selecting the archers, we need to make sure sufficient archers
are available in each category. Therefore, those interested in representing the county at this event are required to
complete a pre-selection form and return by 23rd January 2016 and then follow this up with the main selection
form in May.
Senior GWAS Intercounties 2016
The above event is being held at Exeter School on Sunday September 18th.
In order to qualify for selection, you must shoot four 12 dozen rounds during the current season at a minimum
distance appropriate to your gender. One of these rounds must be shot between the last weekend in July and the
30th August.
DCAS is once again running squad training sessions over the indoor season, if you are interested in attending
please contact Estelle Edwick [email protected] and complete a Squad Application form.
Forms will be available on the DCAS website or by emailing [email protected]

DCAS Junior InterCounties
The 2015 Junior Intercounties match took place on the 5th September at Exmouth. The Junior
Intercounties is an annual competition between the DCAS Junior Team and the Junior teams of the
other three county associations making up the Grand Western Archery Society (GWAS). This year
the match was held as part of the GWAS Junior Championships and was shot as Metric rounds
appropriate to each age group.
Each county team consists of Junior archers in each of the four main disciplines – recurve, compound,
barebow and longbow – across all age groups and both genders. This year we were not able to find
any Junior in DCAS shooting the longbow in competitions. That meant that we had no longbow
archer in our team and we started the match already one score down!
Despite that handicap, everybody else on the Team did exceptionally well and overall we came
second, improving on last year when we were third. The total team scores were as follows:
Gloucestershire
12682
Devon & Cornwall 11120
Somerset
10998
Dorset & Wiltshire 10407
This year the following archers made up the DCAS Junior Team, winning their places on the basis of
scores shot in competitions during the year: Alex Rowe, Mounts Bay; Amethyst Chopping, Exeter;
Ben Cardy, Lacetown; Callum Platt, Barnstaple; Catherine Marshall, Lacetown; Charlie Nicholas,
Junction; Harry Payton, St Austell; Jake Winstone, Brixham; Lily Howe, Totnes; Lucy Rowe,
Mounts Bay; Rebecca Paine, Brixham.
Four members of our Team shot new County records on the day: Catherine Marshall, Ben Cardy,
Lucy Rowe, and Amethyst Chopping. Charlie Nicholas would have done, too, except he’d already
beaten it at the County Champs.
Next year the Junior Intercounties will be hosted by Gloucestershire. There will be spaces available
on the Team for Juniors who shoot in a few competitions during the year: the team can be 15 archers,
this year we only had 11, so as well as the missing longbow we had no reserves! It’s a good job that
all the kids who were there shot well and nobody let the side down. Congratulations to you all.

Record Claims
Lots of records have been claimed since the last time we published them, please see list below and on
the next page for details.
Please remember that DCAS (County) record claims must be made within four weeks and GWAS
(Regional) record claims within three months.
The claim form for DCAS records can be downloaded from our DCAS website and the regional form
from the GWAS site. All regional record claims must be sent via the DCAS CRO so that they can be
ratified before forwarding to GWAS.
Scores at any Open Competitions are eligible; however, please note that any claims shot outside the
county must be accompanied by a results sheet.
“Masters” records may be claimed by archers over 50 years of age.

Calling all DCAS Trophy holders!
I am continuing with the task of weeding out some of the tired looking
trophies which was started a couple of years ago.
This means that I will hold onto the trophies that you return and medals will
be awarded at the DCAS Indoor Championship and Grand Day in 2016.
By collecting in all of the trophies in this way I will be able to assess, retire or
redistribute them around to end up, hopefully, with a stock that will last for
some time into the future.
Ann Gillbanks, DCAS Tournament Organiser.
